Or they could just have got more press coverage

Registered 6 years agoIt's demonstrably not the most dangerous time in history (for us, presumably) though. That does not mean there isn't something to be discussed, of course. -

Now we're just talking about the temperature of the current war. -

@Sharz
No one knows, because hardly anything he says bears any relationship to reality.

I think we've long been in a Cold War with Russia, and they pretty much declared it when they started interfering in the affairs of other countries, starting with Ukraine, then the EU (France and Germany in particular), now the US.

Putin doesn't "admire" Trump in any way, nor does he seek much of an alliance with him. All he seeks to do is destabilise Europe and America politically to strength Russia's position on the world stage and perhaps annex parts of Eastern Europe with little real resistance. Once Trump is in power and it actually comes down to the two having to work together, expect the sparks to fly, the Troll Armies to suddenly turn against Trump and incriminating evidence against Trump to suddenly turn up on WikiLeaks.

I'm not saying it's an impossibility, I'm saying generating a thread with 'war' in the title off the back off a (relatively modest for 2016) BBC headline is a little sensationalist when there's been plenty of closer calls over the last few years.
Would've been more apt when Turkey shot down the Russian aircraft.

I was thinking of Chomsky saying that, but I'm sure there's tons of other sources. And it's blatantly demonstrably true with the movement of troops, the mass evacuation drills and rhetoric, even if it's not covered much anymore. But if you want to stick your head in the sand... -

And yet it's true. Back in the days of the Cold War, at least the West was governed with some degree of rationality, even if the Soviet Union was governed by extreme ideologues. Now, there's an ever increasing move towards ideologically extreme dictatorships on many fronts. Hungary, Russia and Turkey are already there, Poland and the US are on the verge of it, and there are strong radicalist movements in the UK, France, Germany and Italy.
This kind of hyperbole really doesn't help anyone.
We're entering into a similar mentality to that of World War 2, only this time, everyone's armed with nukes and the people with the fingers on the buttons can't be trusted to act sensibly. -

Registered 6 years agoSo this specific moment in time is more dangerous, in all actual contexts and conditions, than world war or the Cuban missile crisis?
Discuss the problems, but don't predicate the discussion on this as if it's useful or insightful. It adds nothing to the conversation.

I don't think anyone disagrees that it's a dangerous time, however catastrophising doesn't really help the discussion.

Poland's nutters will be removed... Got in on a tide of promising to hugely increase welfare and have failed to deliver.
Germany's radicalists are extremely marginal. Merkel is strong in the polls and her next biggest challenge is to the left of her and even more pro-EU. The Nazis and their crimes are deep in the public conscience and as such the extreme right has little support.
