From last year I started keeping a 'games to play' list on my phone (also a movies to watch & books to read one). Whenever something I fancy comes out or a decent review appears, it goes on the list, which kind of acts as a backlog without the financial ruin or crippling guilt. Also provides ready made Christmas and birthday present ideas. Realistically I'll never finish the list but I can live with that.

It worked pretty well, keeping me to one game on the go plus usually one waiting, until santa delivered mirrors edge, steep and dishonoured 2. Still, not bad considering the backlog I've had in the past.

Not counting ps+ games btw, I've made peace with the fact I probably try 50% of the games added and actually make progress in 10% at most...

I've tried this "I won't buy any more games until I clear the backlog" sentiment and utterly failed. In fact I've just bought a couple more (curse that PSN sale). That said, I am going to be attempting the 52 games in 52 weeks target (if I get over 20 I'll be happy) and plough through my backlog of PS3, PS4, PSP and Vita games.

So a ban on games-buying in 2017 would be a good idea for me :-)

Considering games are falling in prices quicker than a quick thing at quick times, it makes it easy not to buy them straight away.

Having said that, the next couple of months seems pretty front loaded with great content so it is going to be hard to be able to resist the lure of gaming gold. But I will try and not pre-order any games other than the Switch and a couple of launch games. Like hell i will.

I was browsing the ps+ store earlier and i managed to resist though. It's a start. I got 39 games on my hard drive that i need to play (various deals and ps+), and probably another 10-20 i have yet to download.

I do a similar thing. Before buying something I always ask myself two questions:
'Will I play this in the foreseeable future?'

    And if not:
'Will it ever be this cheap again?'

If I don't plan on playing it immediately and it's likely to come down in price again or become even cheaper, then I'll just wait.

Very few games sell out now, and nearly all (especially single player) drop in price quickly. I also find that once the initial hype of a game wears off then it's a lot easier to ignore.

Buying a game at launch when you know you won't play it immediately is such a waste. Obviously there are exceptions, for example Nintendo games rarely drop in value so it might be worth getting them for full price. Multiplayer games are worth getting at launch too as there is no guarantee the community will stick around if you wait.

My backlog thing is getting completely ridiculous. I have 2 games on pre-order (NieR Automata and Resident Evil 7) and I'm going to TRY to make those the only games I buy this year. The latter is an Xmas present anyway, so it's technically only NieR that I'm spending cash on.

Can't pass on NieR as I loved the original and really want to support the decision to greenlight the sequel no-one ever expected it to get.

Backlog-wise, what I think I'm going to do is make a list of my unplayed games, and work my way down it. The sheer length of that list will be shameful, no doubt, and that alone should help to remind me that the last thing I need to be doing is adding to it. NieR excepted, of course! ;)

I'm only going to buy a small number of must haves this year.

I've realised that my backlog is crammed full of RPGs that I'd rather play than most forthcoming games so anything new is excessive at this point.

For non-narrative driven games I can live off Overwatch, Rocket League, FH3, Dirt Rally and BF1 for the foreseeable future.

I've cancelled PS+ as I don't play multiplayer games on PS4 and the free games were all bottom of the backlog pile. Pleased to have them gone to be honest.

I haven't even properly touched Witcher 3 yet.

Unless Dishonored 2 ever sinks below the 25 euro mark this year, I'm banning myself from playing any more games.

    I want to finish:
    Witcher 3
    Anno 2070
    Final Fantasy IX
    Steamworld Heist
    The Wolf Among Us
    Transistor
    Oxenfree
    Jotun
    Replay Gunpoint
    Hyperlight Drifter
    Darkest Dungeon
    Banner Saga
    Age of Wonders III
    Replay Sims 1

Before I touch or buy another thing. This list should take me at least another year. Witcher 3 alone, fully finished takes months.

    Need to finish/start:

    Final Fantasy XV
Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens
    I Am Setsuna
    Skyrim
    Dishonored 2
    The Last Guardian
    Battlefield 1
    Grand Theft Auto V
    Bioshock 2
    Bioshock Infinite
    Doom
    Far Cry Primal
    Hitman
    About 5 VR games

That alone should take me two years, that's off the top of my head too, let alone what else I have in the drawer or downloadable. And that's PS4 only, no Xbox, Vita or 3DS included. Also got about 11 PS2 games on PS4 to get through.

Persona 5 and Nier Automata though, no question I am getting those and dumping whatever I am playing on release!

Oh yeah have Dragon Quest VIII and Gravity Rush 2 on preorder...

I sold eight games and felt pleased about clearing out unwanted junk.

A week later I've gained ten. Plus two overall courtesy of a job lot of Japanese imports I couldn't resist.

    :(

I bought myself Resident Evil 4,5 & 6 when I was in town a couple of days ago and I got the Witcher 3 for Xmas after hearing good things about it

I doubt that I'll buy a game in 2017, maybe Resident Evil 7 when it's cheap

It hasn't worked in previous years, it won't work in this either. I just bought Tokyo Mirage Sessions less than 10 minutes ago. I'll be really surprised if I play it before 2020.

@Chug666 making a list is actually a pretty good idea and probably almost as cathartic as actually buying a game (which only gets added to the master in pile anyway).

    Might try that :)
I kind of had this with a amazon wishlist. Problem is your amazon wishlist gets into the high hundreds. I've deleted two over the many years just because i thought it was getting out of hand :)

I do the two questions thing as well: will I play this immediately and, if not, how likely is it that it will no longer be this cheap when I'm likely to actually play it? I need to set the bar higher for the second question; frequently "well, you never know, it *may* go up in price again or become hard to find" will suffice.

I live in the hope I may break a leg and be forced to stay at home for several months with nothing more than my steam catalogue and consoles to amuse my days.

Downside in my plan is I'm self employed, so would be bankrupt and homeless before my leg healed.

I only buy games as it's the only shopping I still do! (that and hardware of course).

I have far too many on the go at one time. I would like to commit to no more games for 2017, but Mass Effect will probably break me ( if 'For Honour' or ' Horizon' don't do it earlier.)

I generally have a rule that I'll only have one story-driven game on the go at any one time. Currently that's Lightning Returns FFXIII, as the completionist in me wanted to put the FFXIII trilogy to bed before embarking on FFXV.

My backlog stretches back generations, though. For example, unplayed PS2 games I own and still intend to complete include Project Zero 3, Rogue Galaxy, and the second and third Sly Cooper games.
