Oh I have tried. I just saw a good tip for that using the two player mode. It looks like it makes it a lot easier.

    It is still ludicrously hard.

Did you use the scooter for the jump rope one?

I'm reached a fork between seaside and ice. So I'm now running around a beach try to stop the big lass slurping sparkle water and i'm just about to pop the cork and shoot the fountain

    Hahaha without even trying...

Jesus there is a scooter method? No just went in and kept trying at the rhythm required from 50+. I found it easier to not look at mario but purely look away and just focus on the rhythm. I got to 90 and 93 over last couple of weeks then choked both times then never got close again. Finally today I held it together.

Mario’s Jump heights vary but the scooter jumps to the same height each time making it fractionally easier.

Getting the scooter in the right place at the start is quite fiddly though.

    I'm done.

Just can't beat the last level.

    Still an absolutely amazing game.

    Damn you Mario!

Last level is not that difficult. There are a lot of hearts hidden in the level, including a +3.

The Breakdown Road: Final Challenge moon was much harder.

Think I have been a bit hasty with giving up, just had a few more goes and managed to do it!

Think I was rushing for some reason which was causing silly mistakes.

Anyway, on to the last 50 odd moons :)

Is there actually any point in the extra health in Darker Side? I just had my first go and got to the bit after the glide and it seemed fairly straightforward. Anything that kills you appears to be the type of thing that kills you in one hit anyway? I fell in the lava by the forks and assumed it would let me throw my hat after getting hit but it didn't and I just lost 6 hearts hammering the throw button instead when I could have just burn-bounced over to the other side.

With 6 segments you can probably get to safety after falling in lava but as you say there are not many dangers after that point.

Well, the extra hearts certainly help in the penultimate section (with those annoying spiky critters bouncing around).

I think the part after the glide with the moving platforms and the fuzzies is probably the part where the 6 hearts would be most useful. You can bypass that part entirely though once you get to the gliding bit before; just get some height and shake the joycons to long-glide all the way past the pipe and right the way straight to either the Bowser painting or the very end of the level if you've got enough height.

Yeah I just got to that bit and took a few hits. Then died on the pokey bit because I had to adjust midair a bit and when I poked it registered that I had the stick held in and immediately flung me off again.

Done it now, honestly the worst and most annoying bit is stacking the goombas a the beginning.

Just been watching my son play this. He is waaaaaay in front of me. I knew he'd rolled credits but he's loads further. Hes got 906 moons which I thought was amazing but then I watched him traverse a kingdom watching him do all kinds of extended jumps using cappy.

Well proud of him. Gonna get him to show me how he does it.

Long jump, throw cap, dive. (Jump the length of 2 long jumps)

It is possible to land the dive on Cappy which lets you do another dive. (Jump the length of 3 long jumps).

I could not figure out a reliable way of doing the later.

Its going to be weird playing future Mario games and not being able to do these jumps.

My oldest is also way ahead of me (somehow besides all his school and homework he still has more free time than me...) and that's coming in real handy: There's one moon in the Waterfall Kingdom (in the clouds) that had me completely stumped (but maybe I shouldn't play this late at night). Next day I showed him and he just said "do you know that if you shake the JoyCons after you throw Cappy that it will home in on the nearest target?" Doh! :)

Just hold the cap button down when diving till Mario bounces.

But the button press to dive is the same one to hold Cappy in place.

Thoughts on using Toad's hints? Cheating or perfectly normal time-saver?

I've finished the "main story" as it were and got most of the moons/stars, including the Mushroom Kingdom, without resorting to paying 50 coins for a hint (I did, however, use the Talkatoo, which I feel leaves a lot of the challenge intact), but after getting stumped on a few in Bonneton, I went for the hints.

Turns out they were pretty useless. With "Frog jumping off the top deck", the top deck wasn't what I thought it was, the moon had been the one in plain sight out of reach all this time, and I just hadn't read the instructions on how to get the frog to high-jump.

With "Forgotten treasure", the clue just led me to the start of the task and left me to solve the rest on my own.

And with the taxi one, I couldn't even get it yet because I needed to solve the taxi moon in another kingdom first.

I'll probably try and get the rest in the other kingdoms without the hints, but I can't help but feel that I've cheated myself out of a challenge.

Nah, it's not cheating at all - without the two-tier hint system, you'd need to spend hours combing through level to get all the moons. And they both give you different clues, and even then you sometimes still need to think a bit (or have the platforming ability) to actually get the moon.

I think some of the moons will be almost impossible without the hints.

I used them quite a bit but it all comes down to whether you are happy using them or not.

I remember thinking it looked very shonky in the pre-release footage, but once you're there and you're playing it, it's great. One of my favourite stages in the game.
