Registered 5 years agoI know i'm alone with this opinion, but as nice and enjoyable as the game looks, I was far more excited for 3D Land and 3D World. I love the purity and simplicity of those games (much like with the Galaxy games, too). Each stage is an A to B assault course with a very focused and tightly crafted challenge. With Odyssey there looks to be way too much faffing around, with your attention often being drawn away from the core platforming elements.
That's not to say this game doesn't look great. When the new levels transform into these mini-assault courses they look excellent. I particularly love the transition into 2D platforming to ascend high buildings or towers. It's just on the whole the game seems to be paced far more slowly, much like Super Mario 64, which I don't rate quite as highly as the more linear Mario games.

I agree with what you are saying Dave, Mario has always been about timing and precision. An open world, go anywhere/do anything version will lose that slightly.
Having said that, it looks bonkers fun so i am looking forward to it. -

Registered 7 years agoYeah I was just going to say, completely against popular opinion but Sunshine is probably my favourite and it's reminding me a little of that which I'm more than happy about.
3D World and Land were great but they felt like bite size chunks for you to dip in and out of, this looks like a Mario game you can properly lose yourself in for a good few hours. -

Registered 14 years ago@DangerousDave_87 No youre not alone, It does feel a bit more 'Sonic Adventure' than previous efforts and I'm not a huge fan of the real world with humans parts. But as you say i'm sure there will be enough 'pure' platforming levels to offset the slower, chatting to people, buying hats stuff. -
I prefer the slower paced puzzler aspects of Mario games as I'm pretty rubbish at them. I really struggle with the nsmb series. Still haven't completed the Wii U version as it's too difficult. -

Registered 14 years ago@DangerousDave_87 Same, 3D World is actually my favourite 3D Mario game. I love how it doesn't fuck around.
I'll give this the benefit of the doubt though. I didn't think I'd be keen on the new Ratchet & Clank for similar reasons but that game found a great balance. -

Registered 14 years agoWhat is this pessimistic madness? Sure 3D land was an almost perfect handheld game but 3D world not so much. It was a very decent 2.5d platformer but not at the level of the other 3D titles. This looks like a potential return to form and after Zelda Nintendo have restored a fair chunk of my confidence in them.
This looks absolutely smashing and my most anticipated game for the year by some distance. -

Registered 15 years ago@CosmicFuzz Nintendo themselves said this week they see two different 3D Mario "series" or "timelines". One contains Mario 64, Sunshine, and this game, the other contains Galaxy 1/2 and the 3D Land/World games.

Registered 15 years ago@mikew1985 er, why? They have two different approaches, the sandbox approch and the point-to-point approach. Sunshine/64/Odyssey are the former approach, the rest are the latter. -

Registered 9 years ago@CosmicFuzz I had the same sensation. I likes sunshine, but I feel its not one of the best. Ik kinda feel Nintendo is breaking the Mario universe Style quite a bit with this one, for better or worse. Its defenitely gutsy andere interesting. But the actual platforming loods kinda sub par I think. curious how this will review. Hoping Nintendo continues its winning streak
