Really enjoying this apart from the 'volleyball' mode - which is utter piss.
  • Deleted user 17 June 2017 12:55:10
I hated volleyball mode in the test punch but have warmed to it a bit more. It's actually not too bad once you've got the controls down. Not great but not awful. It's a lot easier in normal controls than with motion controls.

How much do you guys use the charging mechanic? Seems powerful but with many characters holding block or holding the button post doge or jump seems really risky.

Don't mind the volleyball but agree that it's not great, helps to break things up a bit.

There's fun to be had online, the non ranked games are a lot of fun. Had a couple of 4 way rumbles and a match where 4 of us took on the end boss together, much less intense than the 1 on 1 stuff and more room to mess about.

I've got into the habit of using it all the time, you can charge it pretty quickly but it just won't last long. Certain characters are weak to a particular element so you can do a lot more damage.

Picked this up today, didn’t manage to get on the test punch at all, but thought I’d give it a go...

...and so glad I did - isn’t this glorious Nintendo fun!!!

Started on GP level 1, bit of a breeze, but level 2 is at least giving a bit of challenge... might be a while to get past GP4 and unlock ranked play!

I bought this on a whim last night after enjoying the invitational video. I've always been a bit crap at fighting games and this seems to still hold true today.

I played last night and cruised through a Grand Prix at level 1 without losing a bout. Today I am getting my arse handed to me on GP level 2. Can't get past the first fight. Managed to win one round in about 10 bouts. Quite a step up!

Will try again later. Gonna watch some of Le Mans now :D

It's quite challenging against the AI at level 4 and isn't a game where you can button mash and hope for the best. Spacing, timing, defence and looking for openings are key.

    Is everyone rocking the waggle?

Have tried both. The waggle is quite intuitive, particularly curving punches. Movement less so. I'm bad at both tho :p

Can't stop humming the music. My girlfriend thinks I'm a nutcase.
  • Deleted user 18 June 2017 12:38:27
The motion controls are more fun but movement is a little easier with normal controls. The game is a lot harder than I thought it was going to be.

I used the motion controls for a while but handheld mode is all I really use my switch in

I'm starting to think the training modes in this don't actually reflect how the game works, which is kind of dumb for training modes. The one where you have to avoid grabs is pretty boring so I try and fight back, but it's pretty bemusing watching all my punches just magically curve away from him on their own accord. In the anti air one against mechanica, hitting her punches away with heavier gloves just seems to get ignored. It's incredibly weird.

And the AI seems pretty poor to practice against as well, as it quite quickly becomes apparent that all it's doing is reading your inputs and reacting accordingly.

When people say that completed Grand Prix 1 easily, but found 2 much more challenging did they do it with all characters or just move on after their first run through with the initial character? I am working though all the characters to try and find one that works best for me. Unlocked some new gloves using to 100 mid range thing. I think that I will wait until I have 200 before trying to unlock some more.

I think I've figured some of my punch aiming woes - the fucking Chakram style things curve weirdly.

I swear punching grabs out of the way just doesn't work half the time online. Possibly more. Not that I have any ability to spot one coming and react, of course, but so many times I've definitely accidentally punched at a grab and nothing happens.

Surely none of you will be playing this in two weeks, it looks as deep as a puddle.

Looks about as deep as any other fighter I've seen. And deeper than Mario Kart. I have yet to pick it up, though, so who knows. .
  • Deleted user 18 June 2017 19:26:32
It's quite technical and involved even although the controls are very simple. There's loads to learn.

Not sure if there's any pay off though. Although as pointed out the same can be said for most fighters, thing is at £50 I kinda like a bit more meat on my bones
  • Deleted user 18 June 2017 21:06:25
    @ChiefGB

Yeah, it's like most fighters in the meat of game is in exploring the fighting system. It's bare boned in single player mode and I wouldn't recommend it as a single player experience even after the free dlc arrives and there's more to do.

It's a multiplayer game, pure and simple. You'll get short changed playing this as only an SP experience.

It's great though, trying to get better as Barq and Bite as I just love the characters.

I find the fast characters hardest to play against and every other player is using Ninjara online.

Yeah fairs, fair. It's all you're money of course but I can't bring myself to buy this one.

I *might* be starting to get the hang of using Min Min. Seems like putting the heavy explodey shock thing on the left arm to use with her charge ability and using that to try and start a combo works nicely, using the right arm to deflect stuff.
  • Deleted user 19 June 2017 06:22:16
For some reasons ARMS really reminds me of IK+. It had a simple but fun fighting system too. I'm not loving the Ninjara grab spam!

I'm not sure about this - I enjoyed the test punch so purchased the game. Having spent a few hours (or more unlocking ranked play - completing grand prix level 4 was tough!).

There really doesn't seem much depth, it does seem that people spam the grab move although I'm finding ranked play is better. Not sure how long I will be playing this.

IMO there's way more depth and fun in MK - which I play online almost daily.
  • Deleted user 19 June 2017 09:09:04
It's very early days for the game. It was the same in Splatoon, it took time to develop counter strategies to the most easily abusable ways of playing. Things that seemed really strong at the start were soon exposed as able to be countered. I'm sure we'll see all sorts of balancing, nerfing and buffing in future.

I'm a tiny bit better at dealing with the grabs after this weekend. I don't think they're that bad, especially if it's someone who's spamming them. Since you can punch them out of the way and it leaves them wide open as long as you keep one punch ready at all times they'll never hit you with it.
