| I only remembered 15 minutes before the test ended so didn't get a tremendous amount of time. Tiny bit "meh" for me, but I think everything felt pretty compromised because I was attempting to play it with the Switch as a handheld and have never seen Splatoon before. I think I'd fair better on a TV and with a controller in my hands. I'm away this weekend though now so I guess I won't get to find out! |

Registered 5 years agoFirst impressions are pretty good. 3 games in and I feel right at home. The controls are a little more sensitive than the original, but i'm adapting. I do I keep hitting X to jump though!
Does anybody know what that line half way up your ink meter represents? I've only just noticed it using the Roller.
Also, the game looks slightly nicer than the original. There seems to be some extra detail in the stages. -

They are, although judging by the number of people using them (myself included) I think they are a tad overpowered

I think it might assign different settings to different people during the test, so last time I was on the one that'll throw you into any game regardless of stability, and today looks for a good connection. I'm sure they'll be gathering lots of useful data to make the full game smooth as possible. -

Registered 5 years ago@RageBoy You can pick a player by holding one of the directional buttons. Whilst holding that button down tap A to confirm your jump. -

Registered 16 years agoThat was fun, the Switch dropped from my wireless network a few times which was annoying, I may have to invest in a LAN adaptor. Only managed to finish one game in the last 20 mins which was annoying. -

Registered 5 years agoSo that was great fun! The two new stages are great. They've both got nice layouts, but they're also a little smaller than maps in the previous game. I think this helps focus the action a little more and keeps things interesting. There's less wondering around and more focus on strategy as holding particular areas is key to victory. There's a lot more detail in them, too.
I only used two weapons this time around. The Roller has been greatly fine tuned and became my weapon of choice. The Special Attack is also amazing. I've wiped out an entire team in one fell swoop. It's great for that Muscleforge Fitness map in which most of the action takes place on top of a hill.
I think my only compaint is that matchmaking still doesn't consider weapon choices. I was once again thrown into a game with 4 Rollers on one team. Obviously we didn't stand a chance as none of us had any range, so we were pinned back at base and held there for 3 minutes.
The controls took a little getting used to. It's definitely more sensitive than the original, but I got used to it within 2 or 3 games. What took a little longer was getting used to X being the map button and not jump! That's bizarre.
Speaking of the map, it works well. It's not as great has having it on a second screen, but it's quick and easy to use. You can also continue firing and running around with the map open, which is nice.
One final thing. Using a wired connection, I didn't have a single drop. I also didn't notice any lag of any kind. Maybe this evening i'll try portable mode and see how the wireless holds up! -

Registered 5 years ago@pogomeister Yeah. I'm using the official Lan Adapter that was released for Wii/Wii U years ago. The cable is long enough that you can plug it into the back of the dock so it's out of sight. It worked rather well for Splatoon today. -

Registered 14 years agoHad no connection issues this time round. Not sure if I really like it enough to buy it. Got fed up after playing for 15 mins 🤔. The music drives me mad too, can't find a way to turn it off. With the first Splatoon game for the Wii U did/does it have a lot of content with upgrades and levelling up. It needs something for me to keep going back to it. -
In the first game you earned money by playing matches which you used to buy clothing and various weapons. You also levelled up and occasionally unlocked weapons at certain levels. Levelling was used to a certain extent to balance teams up so that a bunch of level 50 players weren't matched against newbies. It didn't always seem to work that well though.
There was also ranked matches in which you tried to climb through the ranks from C- to S rank. Ranked was pretty tough and I only ever made to it A- rank. Other modes were rainmaker, splat zones and tower control which changed the focus of the game. And there was a very good single player campaign too. I assume that most of this will come back perhaps with addition of new modes as well.
They rolled out new weapons and maps after release. At first there didn't seem to be too many maps but it allowed players to become familiar with things rather than having a whole bunch of content dumped at once. Hopefully they'll do something similar this time but with more maps in rotation. -

I dialled the sensitivity right down to the bottom and still found it to be overly sensitive. The heft of the Wii U gamepad made it a lot easier to aim I think. I'll definitely stick to the motion controls but it looks like it's going to take a lot of practice to get the old skills back.

Registered 7 years agoDidn't see this thread. Loved it, personally. Not played the first so don't know what's different but it's a brilliant take on multiplayer.
Played with the standard gun, was on the winning team and frequently the top scorer- which never happens. Didn't use any power ups and took a while to realise how to reload. Motion controls took some getting used to, especially when it starts getting hairy. How know they can be turned off but I remember Jim Sterling saying the game really opens up if you can get your head round them. Played with a Pro controller, docked and through WiFi.
This is now a must buy which I didn't expect.

Registered 14 years ago@rice_sandwich That sound good. I'm now getting a better idea to what to expect. May have to get this after all. Thanks for that, I wouldn't had known that just by playing the demo. Would had been a good idea for the devs to add some info on the demo to what to expect with the full version. -

Registered 19 years ago@Blurp i don't think motion controls work well at all on any game in handheld mode, but TV mode with a pro controller it actually feels very natural.
Took some getting used to but felt other than for turning i could happily do away with the right stick. -
Played long enough to realise I'm rubbish (bottom of the list both times). I think I'll pass.
