Registered 7 years agoI don't know which one was technically superior but, in my mind, since the PS2 had the Final Fantasy, Silent Hill, Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid, it was destined to win. And it did. -

Registered 5 years agoI think console power is the real gimmick, myself. I've played nothing on my PS4 that couldn't have been done on the PS3/360. For sure, they all look prettier, but Nintendo have shown you can be a generation behind and still develop some of the best looking games out there. The most interesting stuff on PS4 happens to be the less demanding digital games and in most cases that's something the Switch can handle. -

Registered 5 years agoAt best they made a very small loss on each unit to start with. It wouldn't be anything like the losses expected of the other two, I wouldn't imagine.
But there's more to it than just selling a powerful console at a loss. Firstly, Microsoft are struggling to do just that this time around. Due in part to their initial attempts to blur gaming and entertainment, but mostly the console being slightly less capable than the PS4.
I also bought up software sales figures for the PS4 in the other thread, but going by Wikipedia's rough estimates, selling the hardware at a loss in the hope it'll be recouped through software is looking a lot more risky this time around. If you take the top 8 selling Wii U games and pretended they were PS4 games, only Uncharted 4 would stop them locking out the top 8 positions. Which brings me to my second point.
Nintendo would also be pumping out their own software, which sells rather well (even on a failing platform), and that would arguably eat into the software sales of third parties, making it a less attractive platform anyway.

Even if the biggest sellers aren't selling that much, there's a huge number of games being sold and making cash for Sony. -

Registered 5 years agoTrue, but my point is that Nintendo probably couldn't pull that off. Their own software sales wouldn't be enough and third party software would suffer alongside Nintendo's software output.
They seem to be carving out a nice digital market for smaller devs though. One they've not released much software for, themselves, which is probably why a number of devs found success on the Wii U. -
Showed this to my bro in law who works almost every second of the day, gas a backlog of games and watches maybe a little tv here and there... he fell in love with it. Genuinely interested in buying. Showed it to the kids they loved it.
Looking more and more likely I'm gonna end up having to buy this console. So that's £280 For console, £50 For a game then £28 For a chargeable battery. Is it 1080p when connected to tv? Weak ass hardware grrrr -
The switch was absolutely never going to compete with the PS4 or Xbox. As soon as they had the idea of a portable console that sort of power was out of the window. To me we are entering a phase of diminishing returns anyway, you need substantially more power to deliver a game that looks a little better. I'm really looking forward to the Switch, it will really suit me to be able to play on the TV and then pick it up and play in my hands too. Get me some of those quality Nintendo style puzzle/strategy games on the system and I'll be very happy, at the moment that is what is lacking for me. -

Registered 9 years agoI am still balls deep in on the Switch. When the Wii U was announced and they mentioned off screen play, I though to myself I cannot see me taking advantage of that. I cannot believe how wrong I was. I do not have enough time to catch up on my back log of games as it is, so the portability will see me get through a few games.
People talk about the lack of games, and that has been true for a couple of generations on Nintendo home consoles. But lack of time means I will get to complete some. If BotW lives up to expectations I won't need anything else for a few weeks. That'll get me through to Bomberman and Fast RMX. I then have the choice to double dip with Splatoon 2 and MK 8. If not I can always play ME:A, or complete tLoU, and a few others on the Wii U and PS4.
The online and storage are where the potential worries are. Paying £20 a month for a service I have never had a problem with previously may be a problem for me. Online games with friends on Nintendo consoles tend to die off quickly after the intial thrill wears off. I am probably not going to lose sleep over the lack of voice chat. I managed in many PC and PS games. I need to know what I'll be getting for my money.
The storage seems measly, except, until about two years in, it was sufficient for the Wii U for a reasonable library. As the games will be on cartridge I will most likely go physical over digital, so it is less of an issue. -

Registered 17 years agoYeah I'm still in 100% in. The launch lineup is disappointing but looking longer term I can see myself getting lots of value from the Switch. I'm pretty excited about seeing what the eshop brings to it, as it's been a real plus for my 3DS. I hope that it's in place on day one (although I owned a 3DS at launch so my expectations are low on that front, tbh).
I just wondered about the specs vs an iPhone because I have no idea currently of the on paper capabilities of the Switch, but I can see what the iPhone can do. -
