| Does WW even have a freely movable camera? Pretty sure I played the whole game using z-targetting. Or are you lot going on about normal/inverted controls for freely aiming the bow/hookshot etc.? |

I think that's one of the biggest problems with MM. If you put it down for any length of time it's tough to get back into.
Another hand up for TP being the best Zelda. o/
Really wanted to love Majoras Mask, but got over halfway through on the DS and it got abandoned pretty much :/
Personally though it's my favourite in the series. I think it truly fits into the category of 'games as art'. The intricate nature of the world and quests, the music, the themes and the atmosphere all make for a game with a stronger personality than any other in the series for me. Which is especially impressive considering it just re-uses assets from Ocarina.
It also has the best temple in the series (Stone Tower). -

Registered 8 years agoI enjoyed replaying TP last year. Weird how some of the issues i had with the game first time round were just perception issues really. The overworld wasn't as big and empty as i remembered it.
Not sure what my favourite in the series is really, actually enjoyed ALBW more than all the others thinking back on it. Dungeons were a bit easy, but it was just damn enjoyable to play. -

Registered 8 years agoIm another one that struggled with MM as a kid. Played it on 3ds last year and qhilst i do think it a great game, it is not my favourite Zelda.
Yes the side quest puzzles are excellent, but I too found the time mechanic frustrating at times. At worst you'd run out of time to complete a dungeon. Which happened on 2 of the dungeons to me.
Then there is making sure you deposit all your money into the bank. I ran out of time once as I ran to the bank!
Getting the ability to change how quickly time flowed was an important step, I may have given up without it. Though I feel the game could be improved by having a "wait here until ..." option. -

Registered 8 years agoHave to say Skyward sword is the Zelda I have least enjoyed and found the controls the most frustrating.
Others have been fiddly but have never felt like they were detrimental to the experience.
Will second Joelstinty in saying ALBW is my favourite since OOT or ALTTP. -

Registered 10 years agoCouldn't get on with albw despite loving the art style, too open and aimless for me, didn't work (may prove to be a personal problem when botw comes around) and the item loan/buy mechanic took much of the charm away. Very fond memories of tp but then I haven't replayed and I didn't really overdo the optional stuff. Meant to pick up the wiiu version but never seen it cheap enough really. -

Registered 15 years agoI didn't like twilight princess, I got through about 3 dungeons and stopped because it was drab and boring beyond belief.
Will try again soon though. Wonder if I'd be able to get through it before botw releases. -

TP certainly had it's moments of beauty - some of the dark world sections around the city, the ice levels and some of the odd corners of the map were fantastic.
Agreed here. I felt the graphic style of TP to be completely without charm (though to be fair, I think I stopped playing soon after leaving the tutorial village with greasy man child link and his greasy adult child villagers. -

That reminds me, has anyone heard whether BotW uses gyro control for aiming? I love using a combination of sticks and gyro for aiming whenever I can in games, makes it so much better in my opinion. -

Registered 15 years agoI think I would probably hate Majora's Mask if I played it now. It was a proper punishing yet rewarding type experience, like Dark Souls or something, but I wouldn't have the patience these days. I did love it at the time and in some ways I think it's the best one, but yeah, it's a fucker.
I think there should be a bit of that with Zelda games though. They should be challenging enough to stay with you when you're not playing it. You should be dreaming of Water Temple and Guardian Statues. This again was something missing from Wind Waker for me. It was just so straightforward. I don't really agree the charm "more than makes up for it". It makes it an enjoyable experience but still not a particularly fulfilling one.
I kind of forgot about Skyward Sword. Remains the only Zelda I didn't like enough to complete. -

Registered 14 years agoI don't think it was just the charm that held Wind Waker up - I actually think the story and characterisations are the best of the series and I really liked exploring the ocean, trying to scout out all the smaller islands and whatnot (but you're speaking a man who liked the Mako in Mass Effect so adjust accordingly).
It's also my favourite soundtrack, which is a bit of a big deal for me with Zelda, but then I suspect that's as much to do with it reminding me of a certain time and place as much as anything.
But, urgh, yeah, Skyward Sword... I actually gave up after my first attempt at the final boss as I really just didn't care enough. The only section that really springs to mind in that game is the area that got flooded, which was a neat enough idea but really doesn't make for a classic game. -

Registered 7 years agoLink to the past and wind waker are the only two I've put serious time into, competing both, yet for some reason I always want to play a new Zelda then don't.
Hopefully switch will get the last couple rereleased.
I don't know why but I don't remember ever having any of the sailing issues in ww that I know loads of people have.

Yeah - no surprise that people have struggled with the 3DS version, after years of relatively straightforward Zelda games. Even I hated it a bit when I first played it (not helped by that fact that the version I played on the GC was prone to crashing - which literally meant hours of lost progress). I was so close to giving up, but glad I persevered, as it's a masterpiece of a game. The Dark Souls analogy is quite apt, really - it will fuck you over if you don't play it the proper way.

Registered 15 years agoAlso the masks where such an innovative take on the ‘progress through new items’ mechanic.
Again, I feel like they’ve got a bit lazy in this respect with recent Zeldas - boomerang, catapult etc. Does feel similar every time. Hoping for something special with BotW. -

Registered 10 years agoI can't remember a great deal about tp (hence why I would like to replay) but the dungeons and boss design I recall being really happy with without remembering any specifics.
Think I'm having a Zelda day today (like I haven't got enough other shit to get on with :/ ) -

Registered 11 years agoHmm, seems that opinions on Zelda games are a lot more varied than I thought. I've generally assumed that OoT, MM and LttP were always considered the best. Personally, OoT is my favourite (though I admit, that could in large part be to playing it when I was 3 or 4 years old and essentially growing up with it, first finished it all by myself when I was about 15) and I think ALBW is 2nd and WW 3rd for me, I also love Skyward Sword and, to a lesser extent TP. Then MM would be my least favourite. But I don't think I've ever actually finished any other games in the series.
I'm surprised to hear so many of you say that TP is your favourite. I think it definitely has some great moments and dungeons but, on the whole to me it felt a little too generic to be particularly memorable. Plus, I really didn't like the forced Wolf sections in the first half of the game and Hyrule Fields felt way too big for the amount of stuff that's in there (something I really hope I'm not saying about BotW). However, it's my most played Zelda game having finished it 3 times.

Registered 10 years agoOoT I still consider to be the greatest game of all time but, like @MatMan562, I dont know how much of that is swayed by nostalgia. I was 16 when it came out, got it as a present for Xmas 98 having never played a Zelda game (I was a SEGA boy intil the N64). I absolutely adore that game, no other game since has captured that same magic for me. Now I'm old, grumpy and with very little time to play games, I don't think any game ever will! -

Registered 15 years agoOoT will always be my head and shoulders above the rest favourite I think. In the same way that Metroid managed to take a 2D game that I knew and loved and make it into an 'actual world', OoT did that in the most memorable and incredible way. I doubt I will ever love a game more.
TP is probably quite far from being my favourite, but I do think it was a huge step up in terms of dungeon design after WW. It just took itself too serious and was unnecessarily dark. -
So this has leaked online and I will now be ignoring this thread in case some wannabe joker decides to spoil any of it. -

@Mfolf
There's a three pronged split storyline (based on what happens in OOT) and it's mostly a bit of a mess, but a few games directly follow other, mostly a few references and such
