Registered 10 years agoIn fairness, they lost me right there (and likely many others) I can't see it being much more successful long term than wiiu. Nintendo just haven't learnt from their mistakes in my eyes. And believe it or not I find that a massive shame. -

Well I'll put it this way, if Fifa 19 comes out on it I'll be very surprised. If Nintendo continue to create machines that can't keep pace with the others most of the third parties will once again fall away when they can't easily transfer their games. I'd love to be wrong, I really would but I don't see Nintendo doing much different than before.

To launch with next to no games means once the launch crowd have got their hands on it, why would anyone else want to buy in?
Anyway, back to the game. I can't fooking wait, it looks exceptional, pikey wiiu version or not.

Registered 8 years ago@ChiefGB From what I have seen it is exceptionally easy for devs to bring their games to switch. Perhaps not the aaa titles such as fifa. But the devs behind that snake game coming aoon said it took only a week to get a build working on the switch.
Apparently nintendo have been going out of their way to support devs using unreal engine... -

To clarify I LOVE Nintendo in house franchises and I like my wiiu but the days of them ruling the roost have long gone and they seem out of touch with reclaiming it. With mobile being particularly successful for them I worry they aren't doing enough to not follow segas footsteps in the long run. -

Registered 10 years agoSwitch will get next to fuck all AAAAA 3rd party games unless it starts to sell shockingly well and even then it won't get that much .
Anyone who wants it to be their 3rd party machine should forget it, it's a console for Nintendo games, indies and any cool exclusives they can secure, simple as that.
The 2nd reveal wasn't great but the marketing so far seems solid , no idea how well it'll sell though. -

Registered 13 years agoThey won't have enough units for the first three months for it to sell shockingly well. Also the amount of work needed to get graphically advanced games to run on the hardware would be unsustainable. -

In 2011, during the height of PS3/360 era almost 800 retail games were released that year. Just over 250 were released last year. (There is a chart around somewhere) That is quite a big drop and will only increase with more power.
Third party titles themselves are being treated as exclusive or big releases from Sony and Microsoft themselves and it feels like, whilst 250 Games is a lot, the must play titles are fewer and farther between.
On the other side indie titles are becoming bigger in scope, have higher production values and were almost at that B tier level of gaming again , they are getting critical and commercial acclaim, and more importantly they account for probably 75% of software on other machines, which the switch should get too.
Not making excuses as it sucks not to see the likes of resi 7 and battlefield on Nintendo hardware but I do think the gaming landscape is changing, which should suit Nintendo

Registered 17 years agoI wish people would stop judging Switch specs only as a home console. This is a small, handheld device.
At launch PSP was about halfway between past and current gen.
At launch Vita was about halfway between past and current gen.
At launch Switch (appears to be) ahead of WiiU (mid gen) and somewhere up to current gen. Pretty impressive really.
The problem is partly their tactic of selling this as a home console not a portable.
That said (back on topic) - Zelda looks awesome, and I can't wait for my launch day Switch version. -

Registered 14 years ago@RobTheBuilder Considering the GPU runs over twice as fast when docked (768MHz vs 302 MHz) I think it's fair to treat it as a home console. If it was the same spec portable as docked then I would say it's a portable. But as it is it's almost like 2 different machines. -

Registered 17 years ago@up_the_ante I think that's unfair. It's clearly designed so that every game has to work the same (bar resolution/detail) whether docked or not. It's impossible to have the machine run much faster on the go without needing huge batteries or much higher costs - but on the small screen you don't need as much detail anyway.
WiiU on the go, WiiU+ at home. That's a pretty decent offering, especially as I expect there'll be futher upgrades over time.
Besides, if they didn't offer the speed boost at home, it would be a totally wasted opportunity - and everyone would be complaining even more about specs. I think they've done a good job (as far as can be seen) of balancing the spec sheet with size/price. -

Registered 10 years agoBut isn't there a risk it will just be a halfway console all through. Average games because the portable games at home may be a bit basic, and home games gimped so they can be played portably? But then it is Nintendo and they are magicians. -

It is possible, but i think the biggest difference between , say the Switch and the Vita is that nintendo will be treating the Switch as a primary console. Also, typically, nintendo titles in large are designed around bite sized gameplay so there shouldn't be too much issue creating games suitable for its design.

I guess we will find out really with Zelda! Will be the first test of whether home console games can work as a portable game also.
I do hope that Portable Zelda doesn't disappear though. A link between worlds was great. Never played Minish Cap or Oracles and they too are widely regarded. -

Still, I'm glad they announced the DLC now rather than post release so I can budget for it. Not sure I'll actually bother as it doesn't sound like there'll be a lot to it, though I might anyway just so it's a part of the Great Switch Launch Day Spendathon

Registered 10 years agoLol just a bit. Still, Nintendo have so far delivered great value from the dlc they have released over the last few years (thinking Mario kart really) so there is some hope.
Sadly $20 will mean £20 no doubt.
Whoops front page updated now, showing £17.99, still not far off I guess. When does uk get a single benefit from brexit again??

Which gives me hope for their online pricing (Figure given so far equates to between £17.99 and £26.99) -
Didn't expect DLC for Zelda. Certainly didn't expect to be interested in DLC for Zelda.
Depending on how I fair with the game I may well buy in for the "original story".
