I cancelled my pre order for the win 2. Ultimately I want better performance for emulation and games so decided to go for another mini console sized pc instead (MSI Trident). For those getting the win 2 I'd suggest joining the discord group. Lots of good info on there. |

Registered 16 years agoSo I’ve spent a lot of time on YouTube and reddit taking a look at what people have got running.
Out of the box it’s a bit ok, but with a reasonable amount of tweaking, TDP adjustments, undervolting, thermal paste replacement and killing off of resource hogging windows processes it’s amazing to see what people have got running at 540p/720p.
Stuff like BattleTech can run @24-30fps, same with andromeda and older games are anywhere up to 50-60fps.
I think if you aren’t a stranger to the ins and outs of tweaking you might get a lot of mileage.
I’m kicking myself for not backing this and now have to deal with the shitcunts on AliExpress. -

How's your no buy July going?
Might get Skyrim vr as it's on sale but even then I'm wondering could I play a game like that with the headset for 100 hours? Doubtful -

Well, this is boring. I now have a budget, where I've allocated every pound of income so that it has a 'job'. I've always kept a spreadsheet of the regular monthly bills but I've never kept a close eye on making leftover cash be for the things that are most important to me. I anticipate some reasonably big expenses over the next 2 to 5 years so it's time to get into it. I'd also like to travel more and eventually work less.
It's so easy to fritter away fairly large sums of money over the medium to long term. The category of 'games and gadgets I regret buying or didn't make the most of' must run into 4, if not 5(!) figures over the years. So I'm going to see how this budgeting lark works out. -

Registered 18 years agoI’ve been using YNAB (the old non-SAAS version) for a while and it’s great for keeping an eye on what I’m spending, especially now I pay for pretty much everything on card and import the transactions etc. I’ve been spending a lot less on games than usual lately so I’ve got a nice “nest egg” saved up for later in the year.
Only issue is that I’ve now convinced myself that I can totally afford this new laptop I want...

@uiruki
I bought YNAB a long time ago but didn't get into using it properly as my bank didn't offer transaction downloads at the time. Now that they do it makes things a lot easier to import data. I had a look at the new version but it's subscription based and a web app so I think I'll stick with the older version. -

Registered 18 years agoYeah, the old version still works perfectly for me across all my computers and my phone. Since the bank data stuff is all standardised in a single file format I don’t think support is going to change and I honestly can’t see an advantage in paying monthly for it.
Definitely a case of people trying to charge in a situation where it isn’t needed, and them removing the version that runs locally is kind of bad. I’ve been looking at some software stuff to help my team at work and everyone just wants to charge per user for some Azure or Amazon based software rather than providing something we can run on our own servers which is really getting annoying when there’s scope for anyone at my company of 4000+ people to use it. -

I’d definitely read it but I think much like the Dragonbox Pyra thread someone else made it’d likely be something I just observe with interest. Saw a photo of someone playing K-Shoot Mania with a mini sized Sound Voltex controller and briefly got the green mist though!

Registered 16 years agoLast day, holding off buying a couple of bits I've had my eye on.
It's tough as marketing is getting very good at putting things in front of you, but it's taught me something.
I'd recommend uninstalling any Store 'Apps' from your mobile, stop them nagging and popping up deals on your phone.

I failed the no buy month as I bought a very cheap Chromebook the other day. On the bright side I didn't take it as an excuse to suddenly blow out on loads of other things. My budget tracking will kick off properly the next time I get paid. -
Bump. A new year and a chance to refocus and make 2019 the year I get a real hold on miscellaneous expenses aka don't buy crap I don't need. I have even started a spreadsheet to log purchases. Let's see how long that lasts.

I did that last year, and doing it again this year. Last year i got up to an average of £350 a month on "stuff". I also marked in the spreadsheet of where something turned out useful, something turned out a waste of money. I also put down -ve where i re-sold something on ebay.

Surprisingly, i only ended up with about £800 of "useless" money, i thought it would be more than that.
I need to properly curb it this year though, got less money as going 4 days a week from february.
So far, made £33.40 from Diablo and spent £4 on into the breach so i'm up!

@THFourteen
Sounds like a plan. I've spent about £120 on unessential stuff in the last week although about £90 of that was on 3 games I really wanted for the 2019 challenge. I'm planning to buy a book in the sales and that should be it for January.
