Not particularly concerned for hardware and performance differences just looking for the best handheld console right now to play on the go. Don't have a 3ds or similar nintendo products as of yet. Any suggestions and pros and cons between handhelds?

I love my Switch lots and probably won't touch my 3DS much, but that's because I've played all the 3DS stuff I fancied. Rationally, I'd go with 3DS as the software library for it is immense right now. Fire Emblem, lots of different Pokemon games, Bravely Default, Pullblox, Monster Hunter and lots of others games I won't bother listing as it's really up to you what sort of stuff you like.

Chances are you'll find plenty if you google a list of 3DS games, so I'd recommend that. That said, I'd have a Switch in a heartbeat if I didn't own one and tried out Zelda Breath of the Wild on a friends one, as it really is so good I'd have happily bought a console for it. That's just me though, I'm not sure I could recommend such financial irresponsibility for anyone else :p

If performance / hardware isn't an issue it all comes down to price and number of games available now and over the coming year.

Looks like an easy 3DS win to me

Go with the Switch. It's absolutely fantastic. Zelda is immense. Fast is great fun and when Mario Kart 8 is out, you'll be sorted. Plus you're future proof.

I do like my New 3DS XL, though. Started playing Chrono Trigger recently (DS version) and it's great. Plus Mario Kart 7, loads of Zelda games, and Fire Emblem is something you have to try if you ho that route. There's a demo for FE Awakening on the store.

Given the price hasn't exactly plummeted since the Switch came out, though - a vastly nicer machine, much better made, more versatile, more capable - I'd definitely go Switch. The option to play Zelda on a telly should not be taken lightly, it's my preferred way of playing it by far.

3DS does have a massive library though... if you thought you'd get much milage from older games, NES, N64, DS, Game Boy, etc, then probably 3DS would fit the bill.

Switch for newer games, 3DS for golden oldies would be my shout

Personally, if you don't have a WiiU to play Zelda on, then the Switch is worth buying for that advantage alone.

Not to mention the updated WiiU classics like Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon 2.

Given the sales forecasts got upgraded, I would expect nintendo to be putting a lot of effort in to the future of Switch right now - and although the 3DS has a great library, if it was me I'd look forwards not backwards.

I just bought a 3DS XL and I highly recommend it!

You can always buy a Switch next year if you still want one but there will be more than enough stuff to keep you busy in the meantime.

I've got both and the switch is so much nicer to use and then there's zelda. Can't see me using the 3ds again now I've used the switch.
  • Deleted user 22 March 2017 07:35:24
Got both and love both but I'd go for a 3ds at this moment in time. Far stronger library.

The 3ds does have a great library but it depends what you're looking to play and how much time you have. A lot of 3ds games are lengthy and might take weeks or months to finish.

Now that I've tried the Switch I don't feel compelled to go back to the 3ds beyond a couple of games that I'm currently playing. The Switch has the advantage of in and out of home portability and on TV play.

The sensible option would be to buy a used 3ds and play it for the rest of the year, then jump into the Switch in 2018 when a lot more games will have been released.

How much better is the 3ds battery life than the Switch?

Get the 3DS. Zelda is awesome, but even if you buy just a handful of the best games for the 3DS, you'll be busy until the library for the Switch is bigger.

    i would suggest a 3DS (and a vita).

wait a few years for a switch.

I'd say the 3DS has one of the best gaming libraries ever. There's excellent games for every genre bar shoot'em ups. I hit around 200 - 400 hours playtime on the console every year from launch (thanks activity log).

Having said that, I'd got got a Switch it would be harder to go back. It's such a fancy bit of kit and a huge leap in graphics and screen size.

That's not a bad idea but think long and hard before you do.

I bought one in january (second hand you should get one for £50) but liked it so much i ended up upgrading to the 3DS XL, so am now taking a hit on that.

The 2DS is great but its a night and day difference between that and the XL, so if you're planning to use it for a year or more, i'd save the money up and get a used 3DS XL perhaps. They usually go for £120-140 on ebay depending on condition.

It really depends what kind of gamer you are. If you don't mind outdated graphics then a 3DS is pretty sweet but there is quite and allure to the Switch and it's shiny newness. I love mine and haven't played my 3DS since picking one up, I really should get back to it and finish some of those games off....

Also from a portability perspective, for me anyway, the 3DS being pocketable (jacket / coat pocket!) is massive for me.

I carry a bag to and from work so thats fine, but there are loads of instances where i'm getting the bus or train and don't want to carry a bag with me.

New 3DS XL all the way until Switch has a library worth considering. As a Wii U Zelda, Mario Kart owner, there's nothing for me yet. Whereas 3DS has years and years of quality hits AND supports the DS library too. It's a goldmine of portable gaming.

Personally I'd say the best handheld console is either the Vita or an iPad. But obviously depends what games you're after. If you specifically want Nintendo's stuff 3DS is a better option than Switch right now.

The Virtual Console currently isn't anything and no details about it have been shared (other than confirmation of online multiplayer).
