You can also download movies illegally and not buy a blu ray player or pay the studio if you like.

    You wouldn't steal a policeman's hat...

On a serious note, how have Nintendo not stamped this out already? They're usually quite quick with dirty pirate people. This could significantly impact sales.

Nah, the best reason to buy a Switch is that you can play Zelda on the sofa, or on the train, or in bed, or whilst laying a dirty brown cable.

The emulator works with the WiiU disc, afaik. No need to pirate it.

I remember when i lived in Saudi as a kid, it was actually harder to get real software than it was to get pirate software.

Basically there were PC shops where you would walk in and ask them what games / software they had (they'd usually have a big list in a book, plus some new stuff that just came in), and there was a price per floppy.

In fact if you took your own floppy they would just charge you for the copying. They had these racks of disk-copying machines too.

Fucking loved that place, but mental now that I've grown up and live here and understand exactly how much money they were making off other peoples hard work.

@dirtbox - i thought it looked like shit on a wii u emulator? EG put a video up the other day and it was pretty janky.

I'd buy the disc and run it on a PC to be fair if the emulation was reliable and it worked with a controller.

EDIT - Nevermind, I googled it and I see they've patched the emulator and fixed most of those bugs.

    Think I might buy it

    How nice!

But yeah, emulation exists mostly for its use to pirate stuff. Maybe a fraction of a percent will bother buying a copy to run it through an emulator, but nearly everyone else will pirate it. I've already spoken to friends about it who plan to do just that. Just so they don't have to buy either a Wii U or Switch. That's the way emulation has always been and always will be.

There's nothing cunty about the consideration that such piracy could negatively impact the platform you support.

What kind of specs does one need to run dolphin well?

That's slightly different in that Media player can be abused that way, but isn't designed for it. An emulator, especially for a such a modern console is designed to pirate.

I mean, do whatever you want. I'm not calling out anybody for being a cunt for stealing, but I think it's fair to be concerned as to the impact it might have for some developers and platforms. All I said was that i'm surprised Nintendo aren't seemingly acting on it in anyway. Especially considering this involves a very new game.

    @Dirtbox

Ahh sorry didn't read it properly. I heard Wii U emulation and just thought dolphin. I'm a bit behind with all the emu news these days.

So it is. For some reason i thought it did Wii U as well. I'll take a look at Cemu though, cheers.

But it isn't specious. Consoles have been abandoned purely due to piracy issues. The PSP is a prime example. I'd have been rather annoyed had I invested in one at the time.

I know this is Wii emulation and the Switch is another platform entirely, but it isn't going to get off the mark if it's flagship titles end up playable, for free, elsewhere.

Is there an established causal link between piracy and the PSP being abandoned? Are you sure it's not just the hardware being rather niche outside Japan?

The N64 didn't have much piracy compared to the PS1 so why did the N64 get abandoned early then? Surely all that would be pirate money was flowing into Nintendo's pockets and they should have been pumping out the games instead of having continual droughts. Piracy didn't stop Sony from fully supporting their platform after all.

Obviously not every platform fails due to piracy. Nobody is claiming that. However, the PSP got hit hard by it after its first few years.

I know it's odd to say this, but piracy on the other hand helped Sony to sell more PSP's. Everybody and their mother was talking about "custom firmware" in those days.

I have a Mame cabinet. I have a Revo GBA hardware clone. Piracy can definitely sell hardware. When the machine is still alive though, IMHO it's a bit tight just for all the obvious reasons.

It'll be interesting to see if the Switch being region free makes any difference to attitudes.
