I disagree about a serious Battlefront. An accessible Battlefield with a Star Wars wrapper is pretty much exactly what I want. Some changes would need to be made to make everything fit in the right places but its doable.

This isn't that. I don't get on with the core mechanics of this at all; it all feels too loose. Its nothing to do with the added depth, of which I still don't think there's enough. Its a lot wider but not a lot deeper, imo.
Ok maybe maybe serious was the wrong term but your points there fit in with my feelings. Deeper was probably better.

This is proper shite, especially the space shooting mode whatever it's called. Fuck knows how Dice still manage to make flying controls awful after all these years.

I've never played a Battlefront game before. I went online and was killed before I could figure out the controls. I tried to start the practice mode but it gets stuck on loading.

EDIT: Okay, I played a bit more and once you know what you are doing is entertaining.

Do you like the game so far?

I enjoyed it a lot more than the first which I thought was poo.

This was definitely a lot better but having seen the card system boosts and pay to win model? Fuck that

I did play it at the weekend a bit more, and as much as I enjoyed it it still has issues that I'm not sure I could every fully got on board with. I should make it clear I've only played the 40 player mode on Naboo as I'm not a fan of the smaller modes. Most of it, like balance issues, can be sorted before release, so I won't worry about those.

The main thing I'm really not sold on is the class system, which really feels like they've stripped some depth out of rather than adding any. I can see the intent of the class system, but it just ended up feeling like it was the first game, except you get forced to take a fixed set of star cards and weapons. I loved that you could build whatever sort of character you wanted in the first one. Sure, it wasn't all that deep either, but you could mix whatever cards you wanted together. The new system makes me feel like I'm being forced to have a specific toolset.

Don't get me wrong, I definitely understand the intent that's there, and making people take up specific roles in their team that are easy for others to read and co-ordinate with, but I'm just not personally a fan of it. I kept wishing I could switch out one of my cards for something I'd find more useful.

Some of that is also partially tied into the loot boxes, as the fixed classes do become better as you open more boxes, which is also something I'm not all that on board with. Even when I was the one using an upgrade to kill someone, it just felt like I'd bought that kill. I know it was earned through gameplay, but I never really felt the same about the first game even when I've used upgraded cards, as the upgrades didn't feel as dramatic.

I still had fun, but it didn't build on the stuff I personally enjoyed.

I still can't get over no conquest/domination game mode being in the beta/demo. I may have got this on launch off the back of conquest being good, and I feel that with the class system it would be good.

What I have played though, I could never buy this at launch. Its a wait and see for me.

I think it's telling that I played this on Friday night with a mate and haven't been back to it since. Luckily I have ea access so I can investigate without feeling ripped off if it turns out shit.

Yeah, same. I played the first beta for hours when it came out, but tried this Thurs/Fri and couldn't be arsed to play any more. It's just a bit shit :(

Will give the EA Access trial a go, but my child-like enthusiasm has been sapped.

Your issue there is trying to get people to watch a TotalBiscuit video.

I've never really trusted TB on such things as he has been guilty of exaggerating similar issues in other games in the past where they were pretty much non-issues, but I have to admit the loot boxes in this feel like they will become a noticeable issue that will get worse with time. I definitely got kills in the beta thanks to having opened better RNG boxes, which I think would only get worse as I played more. Same with a weapon for the Heavy class I got that was outright more powerful (despite the stats claiming otherwise) and let me win in situations I was clearly outplayed.

You don't need a video though. It's simple as this - you can buy better weapons and equipment with real money. The more you pay, the more powerful you are. There is a random element to it, but you'll always end up with better stuff if you throw money at it.

I personally don't mind someone playing a lot to get an advantage. It's when someone has paid £50 to get significantly better equipment that I don't get on with.

Experienced players already have the advantage of experience when playing against more casual players. They don't need all these extra unlocks to further widen that gap. That is poor game design, unquestionably. It'll put of the casual players who will become all too frustrated long before they realise why they're struggling so much.

But with this gamer in particular, it wouldn't be my first concern. The level design would be and the first game has some of the worst maps in any shooter I've ever played. You can tell early on that there's next to no consideration in layout. The game was so unbalanced that results were often predictable from the get go. It would take having massively unbalanced sides to ever cause an upset in the bigger multiplayer modes.
