Enjoyed last night’s episode. I agree the gunshots are mostly likely Jo shooting Ryan (double tap) or maybe AC-12 riding to the rescue just in time.

I’m also feeling I could have done with a recap of previous series events as even though I watched them all, I’m struggling to remember the finer details.

Great to see Anna Maxwell Martin back and obviously James Nesbitt’s character will pop up at some point, since they obviously didn’t pay him just for a mug shot.

I wonder if there might be some RUC or Northern Ireland connection between him and Hastings though.

I don't get why it ended in a standoff with them shouting at each other, surely Pilkington is there to kill Kate so why not just shoot?

The supposed surveillance has outed him as OCG, so whether he shoots Kate or not, it's not like he can just go back to the station for tea and biscuits.

Yeah I thought that too. Him not shooting straight away gave Kate time to put on her plot armour.

Has Ryan definitely killed before? I did a bit of a rewatch of series 1 and he's a proper sniveling little cunt in that but I don't remember him legit killing?

It was very Reservoir Dogs as an ending. It's funny seeing it compared to series 1 makes you see just how camp it's become. They were only after Gates because they thought he was fiddling his numbers and adding bogus charges to boost his profile.

Now we're after bent coppers who are related to gang members and there's an undercover spy network?

Didn't he drown someone two episodes ago?

Cheers guys. I completely forgot most of series 5 because it wound me up so much. Didn't even realise Milindra was dead. They definitely need proper recaps.

I can deal with a little bit of handwaving about why Ryan didn't immediately shoot, I suppose. But yeah it could have been handled better. Maybe Kate should've pulled the gun earlier when she got suspicious, rather than letting Jo prattle on.

I too struggle to remember who everyone is, but then I am shit with names generally. A recap before the episodes of anything from previous series might be too much signposting, but a 10 or 15 minute recap of everything before it kicked off on iPlayer would have helped.

It's enjoyable telly but it's stupidly daft at times.

Likewise, Kate would/should have shot him in the leg etc whilst distracted. It's hilariously far fetched but I kind of like it still. How many episodes are there?

I'll be that knob - our cops don't shoot to maim, unlike the US. If she shoots, she has to do so with a reasonable threat to life and with an expectation she will kill him. Just firing willy nilly is what the writers do.

    7 in this series.
Hopefully they are going to wrap the whole thing up then we can all go home.

@Dougs I used to work with an ex DC who was very Morton-esque and lived with a couple of Sgts. We generally call armed response if we anticipate that shooting is the only way.

So Kate pulling her gun and Ryan immediately not standing down or shooting her means she has to shoot him first. There is no legit reason for her not to.

Also - fun fact - a lot of gun related crime in the UK doesn't actually involve a shooting

And while I'm on the subject - you may have seen the acronym "NABIS" (nay-biss) plastered on stuff this series, particularly around the journalist murder.

NABIS is the national ballistics agency that does the analysis of gun crime. Spoke to one of their investigators once. He said every gun can be matched to a crime, eventually, so Ryan was chatting shit that it's untraceable. If they get the weapon, they can work it out.

I did enjoy the 'villain reveals his entire resume of actions' dialogue while holding a gun that is likely never been tested, while having virtually no chance of escape.

"Why would you do that?" is all I keep asking myself. Police must have seen this stupid behaviour dozens of times, yet when it's his turn, rather than just keeping his mouth shut, he vomits up a full confession.

Yeah that was rather silly and has been the Achilles heel of many TV villains.

I think it was all part of showing his character. That he thinks he's a bigshot but isn't.
Kate telling him he's a little boy, then him proving himself, then Kate proving him to be a nothing by mentioning the surveillance.

True, but they've also seen detectives employ this tactic to get them to fess up also!

I think they were reminding less attentive members of the audience who he’d killed previously.

I hope Kate does get shot just for some cosmic karma for Steve.

Right The possibilities we have are:

    Kate shoots Ryan
    Ryan Shoots Kate
    Jo shoots Ryan
    Jo Shoots Kate
    Unseen OCG member shoots someone
    Unseen police officer shoots someone
Dixon of Dock Green wanders in and says "Evening all"

I'm surprised he didn't break the forth wall and just speak to us directly

    "Previously on Line of Duty..."

Car backfires and scares a cat which jumps on Ryan's face. Ryan throws the cat down and out of nowhere Arnott appears doing a fly kick which hits Ryan and throws him in the air. Mid air, Arnott swivels and grabs Ryan with his legs and pins him down.

Hastings shouts 'Mother of God, where did you learn that?'.
    Arnott replies 'YouTube'.

    I think that will happen.

“YouTube” but, like, super flat. Really flat. Like he’s reading a gas bill or something.

If Kate was going to be shot then the cliffhanger would be her bleeding out. It wasn’t, therefore she is safe.

Nice that there’s no cliffhanger this week.
Next week could go anywhere now
