Registered 17 years agoGet a desktop PC, then get a mid-powered laptop that has Thunderbolt 3 or mid-low powered laptop and stream via steam. Buggrit.
After that high end R4 Alienware and my experience with the laptop itself (which was kinda crap to use) and their support (laughable) I'd never touch an Alienware again. -

Registered 13 years ago@Pierre2k see, I have to go for top spec or I feel I'd have buyers remorse and that I wouldn't get as many years out of it. I'd rather regret spending a fortune for a couple of months than spend a bit less and have five years of regretting not getting something good enough for my requirements.

Registered 9 years ago@INSOMANiAC Fair enough, I can understand that and upgradability is always a concern with a laptop.
That said, whilst Thunderbolt 3 is meant to be fairly limited with external GPUs, the Alienware exclusive version is meant to be much better in benchmarks so that's an option in future if you want more of a desktop experience.
For me, given the mileage I got out of a 460m, which performed worse than a desktop 460 and wasn't even the top mobile gpu (480m) at the time, I'm not worried about getting my monies worth out of a 1070 pascal based machine. -

Registered 7 years agoI discounted the external GPU thing as not being mature yet, unless you get the specific Razer or Alienware ones. I plumped for a gaming PC. A dell one at that. Got an absolute steal on an XPS tower with a 7700k and a 1070. All working and benchmarking well, and doesn't look a gaming PC, so the wife is none the wiser.
Also, definitely get a gaming laptop, e.g.:

If there was a 1080p version (they only have up to 720p...) I would definitely get one
