Finally finished FF12 so purchased this this morning on the e-shop. Look forward to starting it this evening after work and F1. I wonder if Nintendo had quite a lot of input on this. Another title that is a meagre 3gb in size. Wizzards! |

Registered 18 years agoThe assets on the Switch are a lot closer to last gen than this, so the filesizes for games will be in the same ballpark too. Mobile hardware, last gen assets, it's the perfect storm for consuming minimal space. .gif)
I'm currently a few missions into the third world. Challenge has ramped up nicely to this point, still having an absolute blast. It's such an amazingly moreish game!
Really don't know where the EG review was coming from as regards 'placeholder UI' or it being rough around the edges. Aside from a few small blemishes, this is easily up there with the majority of Nintendo's output from the Wii U era. Captain Toad, Wooly World, etc. etc.
It's actually going to be hard to go back to a 'proper' XCOM style game after this. Mario+Rabbids has all of the tactical thinking with none of the faff, and none of the "oh come ON" annoyances thanks to shonky RNG.

Registered 16 years ago@Phattso I'm loving the three tier hit chance. It removes so much unnecessary fluff. You hit, you don't hit or it's 50/50. It's a great design decision. -

Registered 10 years agoAll the wheat and none of the chaff, certainly seems to fit with this, still has the ability for fist pump moments of glory.
For example I just did the escort toad challenge, turn five comes up when the 5 smashers spawn. I had managed to manoeuvre Mario one space behind the spawn the round before. Cue one upgraded hammer attack, and after all the smashers turned and piledrived mario to death, they also all exploded from a crit and little toad sailed straight through the open space, cue "fistpump" lol -

The game play is top notch, but the humour is so good too. -

Another reason I'm loving the Switch. We live in the sticks and have superslow broadband. An xbox/ps4 update file (for a disc bought game) can take a week to download. I can buy Switch games on the eShop and know I'll be playing them later the same day / the next morning.

Absolutely. With the destructible scenery it even takes away the annoyance of a miss as there's a good chance of leaving the bad guy exposed for the next hero to take a shot at.

So elegant. So simple. So scared that I'm already halfway through the third of four worlds and I haven't even had it a week...
Hopefully the challenges and overworld secrets will soak up some time. Then I have to decide if I'm down wth the DLC or not. Hmmm. Maybe next year when it's all released.

Registered 15 years agoYou should try doing as many challenges as you can when you unlock them or you'll be overpowered for most of them. You only get a few coins and orbs from them so they won't make you OP for the next chapter. -

Registered 10 years agoI completed the first world earlier and then went straight back in for the chests and challenges. Love the fact that some of them are so small that they are little puzzles and spent more time than i thought I would working through the first half of them. The payouts are pittance though. -

Registered 10 years agoLoving the game, just got to the third world last night having perfected every level thus far (with a number of restarts on quite a few levels and changed roster of characters on the second boss)
Completed almost all challenges on world one.
There's one I haven't managed to complete that I think relies on upgrading the distance of the team jump that I haven't done yet but what a great little game!

Registered 18 years agoYeah, closing on them to use Vampire or Dash attacks just isn't doable. Sadly I have an entirely Dash and Vamp team layout that I loved, so I had to shake things up a bit.

No, I'd agree with EG here - although the graphics are lovely, the UI elements (speech bubbles, button prompts etc.) look cheap and a bit jarring, and very un-Nintendo when compared to 3D Mario games. It's not a huge deal, but I see their point.

Played this a bit over the weekend. It really is a very more-ish game - felt a bit too strategy-lite at first, but gets more interesting once the abilities/extra options are added. I wish there were more options to zoom out the camera a bit more and have a better view of the battlefield, but it hasn't been that big an issue so far. -

Interesting. Coming from Wii U games where I'd been working through Captain Toad, Wooly World et al and it seemed on par. You might not stylistically like the fonts, and I agree it's a departure from Nintendo's norm, but it certainly didn't seem cheap or jarring to me. Fair enough though, if that's how it seemed to you.

I'm fairly sure it's how they wanted it to look - a couple of fonts and some icons aren't exactly beyond a company of Ubi's scale after all - rather than being cheap and unfinished. -

Registered 18 years agoAh - I've not actually played those games, so I was just comparing it to the UI of the main Mario platformers. I think it's because the game itself probably looks as good as any first-party Mario game, so the UI is what reminds you that it isn't actually one.
Though having said that, from what I've seen of Mario Odyssey, I'm not too keen on the UI on that either... -

Registered 10 years agoI too think an option to zoom out just a bit further would be a godsend. Many times I've been rotating away trying to see just where the out of screen enemies are and if I can quite shoot them etc. Camera does feel a tad too close at times -

I've finally finished world 2. That boss fight was a bitch. I'm going to have to go back and do it again when I've levelled up a bit more as I only just scraped over the finish line.
I also went back to do the challenges on World 1, got to challenge 1-3 and I'm stuck, it looks like I need to get more power orbs to level up some more as it's impossible to complete at the moment. Is that right or am I missing something really obvious? -

You can, but as the camera reverts to another orientation in fight mode it's easy to lose track of which way is which in the more complex environments. Something that simply being able to tilt the camera up a little would solve entirely.

The Tacticam isn't even that great anyway - sure it's further out, but what I REALLY want is a Splatoon style top-down map of the whole area.

The way to do it is:
You need to rely on one of the smashers to smashbounce Mario over the river and into the reach area. I think I did it by trial and error, but your character that starts along the thin narrow strip of land should go as far along as they can in one move to be within range, but hugging the bottom of the strip of land.
That maeans that the same character can shoot the smasher that is parallel to the character. Shooting it brings it closer to the shooter, and hopefully in line behind Mario. Get Mario to shoot the same smasher afterwards and it will bounce Mario over the river.
I might have missed a step there but that's generally how it happens. -

Registered 12 years ago@Thingy yeah that should work, I had no idea what to do on that one and had to look it up on YT. It's confusing because you end up realising no one is capable of getting there in one turn. -

I got pretty badly wiped out first time on that one, then came back and blitzed the fucker in 3 turns using Rabbid Luigi/Mario. Shotguns, hammers and vampire hits finished him really quickly.

Registered 17 years agoThe key thing is that it tells you the rules are 100% super effect.
I'm stuck a few further on from that - simply because i can't actually kill the required number of enemies with the weapons I currently have. It's a shame that it forces you to purchase newer weapons for world 1 challenges. I wanted to hold off for a while to see what weapons were coming up. -
You can definitely do the first 7 in world 1 without moving on to world 2, you can probably do either 9/10 (I forget which) as well.
