Iíve really noticed the frame rate issues especially in the later areas when thereís more enemies.

Such a shame as Iím sure this doesnít require too much oomph to reach a constant 60fps.

The Switch unfortunately really doesn't have much (enough?) oomph, especially in handheld mode.

@ChiefGB tbf the game is doing quite a lot visually, it's probable that a lot of effects just aren't really switch friendly. There's a lot of stuff the Switch struggles with due to memory bandwidth

The characters are 3d as well, though I don't know if the frames are captured into sprites or not

Yeah I get that but it's a bit worrying none the less. Let's just hope it's optimisation issues that will iron out.

The other thing is that they're using a pretty uncommon game engine and probably weren't targeting switch from the off so their low level structure could well be in need of a rewrite to get it working.

Enter the Gungeon devs had similar issues with needing to rewrite how the game loaded objects from memory to get it working acceptably on Switch, and that game still runs like shit in a lot of fights (though it is secretly in 3D which isn't helping)

They are spriteified with an external tool, see https://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/313026/Art_Design_Deep_Dive_Using_a_3D_pipeline_for_2D_animation_in_Dead_Cells.php

So I agree there shouldn't be as much slowdown as there is (certainly on PS4 Pro, but also on Switch). I'm not sure whether they use a common engine under the hood or not, but it certainly isn't as buttery smooth as Celeste for example.

Got caught in the spinning blades of doom from one of the new enemies, pretty much installed me which was a shock. Tried to hit him with a freeze arrow but I hit the thing in front of him instead.

Dual towers is definitely the way to go when learning the game I think.

2 crossbow towers on the triggers, especially if you have the freeze bow. Makes things much easier.

Got to the concierge for the first time with my first run of the new save last night. Got him down to a sliver of health, had an amazing golden bow, but he got me right at the death.

Seems to happen to me a lot! Dark Souls did it all the time...

The final 20% he goes nuts and it is difficult to maintain your position. I haven't lost to him since beating him so he gets easier. I have lost on the way to him a few times though which is a pain.

what is everyones favourite loadouts right now? I like the infantry bow and balanced blade or broadsword atm.

The freeze bow with dual crossbow towers, don't melee too much so I'm not overly fussed which it is. I imagine the big weapons will work well with the freeze bow as it's a free hit essentially. Not keen on grenades at all and I didn't like the whip too much.

I love the grenades, ice grenade is my favourite.

the whip was good with an inventory bow as it allows you to keep distance whilst it reloads.

about 5 hours, i can get past the first boss every time, have got to grips with the village but the clock tower with the giant two bladed bell-ends is a little bit difficult.

I spent a few runs trying out different combinations yesterday and not getting very far (had three runs in a row starting with the spartan kick)

I have unlocked lvl 2 gold and health and currently (slowly) trying to unlock lvl 3 health because, y'know health :).

Played for a few hours yesterday evening, think I'm around the 5hr mark. Took a few tries on the first boss but can comfortably kill him now. Killed the Clock Tower boss on the first attempt and made it quite far into High Peak Castle, but a mini-boss nuked me. I had a ridiculously powerful loadout though, mostly yellow gear.

For crowds I find the Wolf Trap and Sinew Slicer combo works amazingly well, especially if I have Frost Blast/Fire Brands. Utter carnage!

So it does run with a locked 60 framerate then??

I'll assume the developers tried to get 60fps from it but couldn't.

It much easier when you slow down a bit and don't play at 100mph, although I still do that through the first sections.

We sound at pretty much the same spot in terms of unlocks, that 3rd health potion upgrade will come in so handy when I get it.

@richardiox It's pretty much a continuous 40-50 fps in the outdoor stages on Switch.

It's a custom engine they've written using a cross platform language/libraries called Haxe. Celeste was XNA so a similar ish situation. Celeste isn't nearly as visually busy as this though which is probably why it runs better. In Dead Cells case I imagine since it's custom built by a small team, it's not as in tune with the low level hardware of each platform as an established engine with decades of work behind it.

    @Duffking

I know the game has huge framerate drops in certain areas... I was just retorting to ChiefGB who was ripping me for suggesting that the Switch isn't powerful enough to run it at 60... Even though it doesn't have the power to run it at 60. Very odd.

The developers have already acknowledged the Switch performance and mentioned on Reddit that they have all available resources working on improving it, but don't expect anything before November at the earliest.

I haven't gotten far enough yet for performance to really take a hit.
