Just wanted to vent a bit, really - FFS, AMD! Another delay. Now another two months before it's even announced! I built a PC a year ago and bought a 3440x1440 freesync screen in anticipation of the next wave of graphics cards - of course, Nvidia delivered the goods, AMD released the uninspiring 480 range, no more powerful than my R390. Well, annoying, but fine - but then it's been delay after delay for Vega. A rumour that HBM shortage has delayed production. You surely have to question whether by the time it releases, it will already be outdated. Meanwhile, this - a phenomenal, fully HDR supported, 200Hz G-Sync display on the verge of release OK, I have learnt my lesson; don't buy hardware in anticipation of something you think is on the horizon. But much as my R390 has done a sterling job, I've lost faith in AMD over this. So annoying!!! Edited by OnlyJoeKing at 20:31:00 31-05-2017 Edited by OnlyJoeKing at 20:31:42 31-05-2017 |

Registered 9 years agoMaybe time to sell the old XR341CK, grab a 1080ti and the new ASUS PG35VQ and just draw a line under it... -

Registered 18 years agoIt's still coming in a couple of months though, right? The GTX 11 series isn't coming for a good while (they currently announce the pro versions a long while before the consumer ones) so there's still a good chance they will make what you want available before the next nVidia upgrade.
You sound happy enough with your 390 for now and there's still plenty of time before the next big game season.
It goes both ways too - I'm an nVidia user at the moment, looking at those monitors as an upgrade to a XB270HU, and I'll be honest, finding 2 grand for one of those in Winter time with a combination of holidays and Christmas will be a challenge. Then it'll be 400-700 quid for the graphics card I inevitably purchase next year. As far as hobbies go, it's not that expensive, but it certainly is a constant demand on the finances! -

Registered 9 years ago@uiruki It's still coming, it's true. I'll probably hang fire until it releases to see how competitive it is. Not long now (apparently!)
The constant delays have made me regret going AMD, though. First the disappointing 480, then expecting Vega in 2016, then first half 2017, now this..... The R390 punches well above it's weight and delivers a good experience even at this res in lots of situations, but I've been putting off some games, like The Witcher 3. To get it running on my screen at a half decent framerate I have to turn everything down stupidly low, which largely defeats the point of shelling out for a high end screen.
Plus I have to question whether if the delay is down to a RAM shortage, then when it's finally released, are we not seeing a product that should have been on the market 9 to 12 months ago? So is already a year out of date?
I hope they can price it competitively, basically. But has been a frustrating wait. If I thought I could get ~£500 for my XR342CK (paid £700), I'd be tempted to cut my losses. -
I think the main thing is that those HDR monitors are still a good few months off - nVidia says Q4. The 4K ones are out late summer, though, so that should be a good preview of the tech and hopefully a catalyst for more stuff to actually support HDR on PC as it's pretty limited right now.
Monitor pricing is weird at the minute - given how highly these will be priced, and the almost complete lack of motion on pricing for existing high end gaming monitors, I wouldn't be surprised if you could get the same amount in 5-6 months for your current one as right now, by which time you'll have a better idea of how things are shaking out.
I know your frustration when a card fizzles out of usefulness, though - it was having to play Doom in 1080 on my old 780Ti which convinced me to upgrade.
