Meh, the cat was out of the bag as soon as I let him shoot people in the face in Fortnite. He's enjoying the puzzling a lot.

Edit: although yeah, that cutscene is quite brutal. Missed that...

Fortnite is a staple of our home here too.

I wouldn't consider that to be anything other than cartoon violence myself though. I try to find a balance of not shielding him to a stupid degree, but I also remember being exposed to Resident Evil 1 at a stupidly young age by an older cousin and I wouldn't want that. Not that I'm expecting this to be anywhere near that of course.

Just started, I'm making Spiderman look like a one you'd buy off Wish. Getting hit in the face by anonymous foot soldiers on the opening level is a humbling experience.

I'm having a lot of fun with this I have to say and I'm not what you'd call a massive fan of the Marvel Universe.

I've knocked down the difficulty one notch as I always feel as though you should feel slightly OP in these type of games and quite frankly, I was a bit shite at the default setting anyway. When you get into a flow with the combat it's brilliant fun.

It's very Assassin's Creed in structure but I'm happy they've made the collectibles (so far) clearly visible so you can just pick them up as you swing by. Seems like it will be a fun romp, and the little lad is enjoying swinging around, clearing the basic crimes that pop up and collecting backpacks so it's win-win.

I mean, its violent. You can web throw people off of buildings and launch manhole covers into them. People shoot at you and all kinds of stuff.
One nice bit though is that if you knock people off a building you find them webbed to the side of it if you look over the edge. They don't fall to their death! Loophole!

Heh, yeah. I saw that earlier after I booted someone off a skyscraper, they get autowebbed to the side of the structure.

Firemen and women of NYC are pulling triple shifts taking hoodlums down off buildings 50 storeys up.

NYC Undertakers are also doing a roaring trade because of all the people who have had their internal organs obliterated after they had 100kg manhole covers launched at speed directly into their torsos.

About halfway through Act 2 now. Still intensely dislike the combat, but still intensely love most other aspects of the game. I'm enjoying hoovering up the icons more than the story missions, in the main. Much as I imagine Tsushima does, this basically remixes all the standard open worlders conventions but just does a better job at concealing them within the world's fiction.

I also like that it didn't unlock all the icons to be hoovered too early. About the time I was thinking "fuck this noise" it reminded me about the filter option. :)

The combat leans fairly heavily on the suit you use, so you could try swapping that.

I used the stark suit all the way through because the zappy thing was a useful 'get off me' move and the perks all rewarded the way I was playing.

There's a neat touch in that - I think - you don't have to wear the suit that has the power you want? Simply unlocking the suit is enough to get you the suit power: you can have the look your want in combination with the power you need.

I'll try the Stark zappy one, that just became available to me yesterday. Will need to grind some Challenge tokens to unlock it I think. Cheers for the tip.

Yeah that was a great idea by Insomniac. I love the standard suit/white spider they designed for this game and wasnt forced to wear an ugly one for the abilities.

I played a fair bit of it with the cell shaded one.

I think the issue I primarily had with the combat was that, while the game gives you a huge variety of suit, gadgets and abilities, outside of a few core abilities most of them are very niche and didn't seem worth using to me in most situations. The most useful skills are Yank And Throw, Rocket Return, Perfect Dodge, Chain Finisher, Payback, Bunker Buster and Wrecking Ball. There are lot of suit powers, but I found Battle Focus from the Advanced Suit, which is unlocked very early in the game, was the best option for most of the game. The most useful gadgets for me were Impact Web and Electric Web. Didn't really bother with the others.

I'll have to keep an eye out for the Stark ability.

A lot of the customisation is completely lost on me, I have no idea what certain suits are in reference to (aside from a few I recognise from Into the Spiderverse, think there's a Tobey Maguire era suit in there too I noticed) but you can't not appreciate how much has gone into it. It must be a dream come true for a proper fan of the universe.

I think I used it with web attacks give more focus and finishers generate more gadgets because I was using electric webs a *lot*.

It was a cool system, they built it really well.

The iron spider legs make combat a lot easier, if you want to go that route.

It was never hard, per se. Just annoying and, in large part, not very enjoyable. Basically if I have to do anything other than stealth and a little bit of fisticuffs I'm just counting the milliseconds until it's over.

Some of that is down to the cookie-cutter open world combat events with thugs, some of that is down to some pseudo set pieces that take place in cramped conditions. But I just roll my eyes every time I find myself in that scenario, especially where there are waves of bad guys involved.

In Batman I relished the chance to really nail my performance, get the combos up, play the part. In this, not so much. For some reason I just can't engage with it on that level. But hey - I'm more than halfway through the game so clearly it's not a deal breaker for me! :D

I generally hate mashy combo focused melee games like this. I just don't get on with them on a fundamental level. But since knocking the difficulty down one notch I'm having heaps of fun with it. I've got that balance between feeling like an OP untouchable superhero against the basic street level throwaway thugs, while being challenged by the more obviously powerful bad guys.

I was the same, knocked it down to easy or whatever and I was fine with it after that. It was actually fun

Will have to go back to this. Got a bit bored of swinging around and whacking people randomly.

    I do that IRL anyway.

Oooh, the Miles Morales Spider-Man game on Ps5 has a choice between 60fps and 4k. Nice to know there'll be choices.

It reads to me like it's either PS4 quality at 4K 60fps, or proper PS5 quality probably at 30fps. That's just a guess on my part but yeah, options are always nice :)

Aaaand storyline finished, with 83% of the campaign complete. I never loved thee combat, even by the end, but I was at least competent at it and it never stopped me progressing.

Great story, great pantheon of bad guys, decent game world ( I mean... it's largely, at the risk of being reductive, rectangular blocks), nicely mixed up gameplay.

Not sure I have much motivation to continue and mop up the remaining 17%. Perhaps I'll finish all the side missions, and some of the Taskmaster stuff, but the 20 x random fights in each area? Nope. Fuck no. :-D

I'm pretty sure Miles Morales will be getting a PS4 release, and having made it this far with the combat I'd be up for playing that!

So yeah. Another PS4 open world exclusive that I've liked but not loved, with good but not great combat, carried by an enjoyable story and a memorable setting. All IMHO of course.

Read a rumour that Miles Morales might come with a remaster of this included. Sounds like something they'd mention if true tbh.
