When I look at my list of optional quests I see a red symbol to the left of levels 3,5,6 and 7.
    What does it mean?

It's a temporary/rotating arena quest, available because you've captured the associated monster, and it's not always on the list.

Is it meant to have better rewards?

    Other Monster Hunter musings..
I only have one 9* quest.
I don't have any Kirin investigations despite just hunting one and having the 'investigation added' prompt.
Can someone remind me where I get the tracks for tempered investigations? Is it an expedition in the elder recess?

The rewards aren't any better, but in theory it's a quicker way of farming for parts and crowns as you don't have to scour the regions searching for the monster. The only drawback is that it's random as to which ones show up.

    @Alastair

Tempered (blue) tracks will appear in every region. The investigations they unlock are randomised based on the threst level of the monster who's tracks you pick up.

So picking up a Diablos track (threat level 2) doesn't mean you'll unlock a Diablos investigation; it could be an investigation for any tempered threat level 2 monster.

Threat level 3 is exclusive to Elder's Recess, though.

You're probably better off using SOS to filter for 9* investigations, though and picking the monster you want. It's less faffy.

I keep forgetting about using SOS to find quests.

@Alastair It's the best way (ime) to find group hunts and farm specific quests and monsters.

I read somewhere that Capcom completely underestimated how popular SOS would be. They just thougjt it would be used as a last resort thing and that instead squads would be the main source of multiplayer grouping; but instead most people use SOS instead. I can see it being a staple feature of the series going forward.

Do you need to do that one to unlock others?

@brokenkey 9* star quests are unlocked primarily through reaching hunter rank milestones. The final one unlocks at HR 100

So, something odd happened to me.

I farmed the Dante quest for a good few hours yesterday and got a big fat zero gems. I had quite a few plates and left the game over night feeling a little hard done by.

Skip forward to this afternoon when I logged in I went to check exactly what I needed to finish the set and I was greeted by a mountain of gems I didn't have yesterday.

Very odd, but happy to get it done. I've still yet to have a single gem from Kulve Taroth yet though.

    @Toaster05

Use the Lucky Liquor platter. Increases the odds of getting rare rewards.

Well, I have a bigger problem now. Two words.

    Tempered Kirin.

Hardest fight in the game for me. Probably because none of my optimised sets have halfway decent thunder resistance. Had to go full turtle to beat him.

Got my second KT gem! Fuck farming her again for another 2, hope it comes to the melder at some point.

Equipped a full KT set with an Odog insect glaive dropped from the raid, I'm so confused. Any tips on what kinsect to use? It has its own upgrade tree, there are different coloured buffs, dust clouds, and my brain is getting scrambled just trying to figure it out. Need to watch a Gaijin Hunter vid to figure out WTH is going on.

Whichever bug has blunt damage, blast cloud, and highest speed, then you can spam its attack against the horns.

Once you've got one, you can then customise them to add different element damage as well (you have to build a new bug for each element).

You can switch element on the same bug.
But it does cost money and materials for each switch.

@GarlVinland If you want to go really in-depth then this guide has all you need:

    It's an hour long though.

You can, but if you're switching out stuff in between missions (or even mid-missions), its not really practical. Far better to have a huge bug-farm with every bug you'll ever need*

    *you'll only need 4.

Cheers fellas, I really enjoyed the playstyle so I'm going to give it a good look. Any tips on key skills to have? I imagine the same crit/handicraft bonuses as usual, but imagine something like Airborne might be useful, plus Earplugs so I don't keep getting knocked out of the air by roars.

I went with Pseudocath(?) for the high speed and blast cloud, but haven't figured out how to use it yet. Will give it a try tonight.

Pay attention to your Kinsect buffs!
When you engage the monster, use L2 to aim at the head, and then use triangle (don't know what that is on XBox) to fire your Kinsect.
Once it hits you should notice the Kinsect icon in the top left turn red, call it back to you with L2 and circle. This gives you an attack speed boost. This is critical imo.
Even after many hours play, I'm never sure which body parts get you the orange and white boosts, but aim for body, wings and legs and you'll usually get them. :)

Tail gets green, which is a health boost. I rarely bother with it.
If you miss the target, hit triangle again to re-deploy the kinsect until it hits.

Once your buffes wear off, make a point of regaining them.
You can use small monsters to get the buffs as well, which can be handy.

L2 and then R2 fires a pheromone target so your kinsect keeps attacking.

Perhaps you knew a lot of this already...

Also, you only get the dust effects from and L2+R2 attack. But L2+T lets you behave like a gunner, attacking from a safe distance.

The red boost also extends your combos, and increases damage, so its the primary one to go for.

Thanks, I had no idea how the buffs worked, I've been firing it with L2 + R2 and not realising I needed to recall. :) Only played around with it for a day so got a lot to learn!

KT has been great in introducing new weapons to try. No need to farm for crafting materials, and they're gold to boot.

Hoping for some more surprise content drops like KT. Sakura next week is the last announced new content for the foreseeable future I think, but I feel nowhere near done with this game.

Farmed gems for a few hours yesterday to get the Dante gear, after insect glaive over the weekend it's now time to try the charge blade!

Do low rank quests to get low rank items. :)
