Nintendo just announced that MP4 development is canned after two wasted years. They've sacked the devs are hired Retro Studios to restart the whole project. Game will be 4+ years away. Ouch.

Why didn't they do the obvious and hire Retro to begin with!!

Ouch. Do they have any other big first party games on the horizon? I don't count Animal Crossing.

disappointing, but i rather they put out a game of a high standard than having something that doesn't work.

Ummm... wow. Was the team originally developing MP4 internal to Nintendo?

Not really. Luigis Mansion 3 is the only thing I'm looking forward to that's been announced. Unlike previous Nintendo consoles the next year or so is pretty reliant on 3rd parties and Indies.

After that initial glut of Zelda, Odyssey, Kart and Splatoon my Switch has basically become and indie machine.

Oh dear. At least they've been honest and not kept everyone in the dark about it.

They can redeem themselves by getting the Metroid Prime Trilogy on Switch in the meantime.

Fire emblem, Animal Crossing, Luigi Mansion, Yoshi and Pokemon are I think Nintendo big games this year (and probably a couple of unannounced titles). I think MP4 was realistically a 2020 title anyway.

Metroid Prime 3 was 12 years ago, how many people who worked on it are actually still there? I'm not sure taking it back to Retro is the sure thing they seem to think.

    Yep.

MP4 might as well as be a Switch 2 title now.

A bit of shocker, but you'd rather them get it right than fluff it up. To be honest, it always seemed like they announced the game way too soon. Development had reportedly only started a few weeks before the game's original announcement.

I don't doubt it'll still release before the Switch's lifetime is up, though. Metroid games do no tend to have long developments. Especially when they're based on existing templates. The exception was Prime 3, which had a platform change and was delayed a year just to refine the controls.

@neilka Retro have done great work with the Donkey Kong Country games and those were made after a few leading names left the company. There's plenty of talent within that company, it seems.

The real question is, what have they been working on all these years and has that project been abandoned or set back as a result?

    Starfox, apparently.

Well, it was just a teaser to let fans know that it's finally happening, and to build excitement, and in that respect it definitely was worth announcing at that time. I'm sure they didn't anticipate they would have to restart development completely less than two years later.

Speaking of which - the original MP had loads of difficulties during development too, iirc. When it eventually came out it I think most critics were shocked at just how good it had turned out.

Should make for some interesting before/after leaks in the future.

@Kay The first one did, but that was a complete reinvention of the series. I'd heard they'd experimented with third person cameras and builds running on ever-changing development kits. I imagine most of that development was spent just trying to decide how the game was going play.

More Wii U ports incoming. My Switch will not be seeing much use for a few years. Luigi's Mansion 3 and Fire Emblem are the only games that look remotely interesting and the promotion of FE has been very subdued.

@Rogueywon It was a team at Bandai Namco (though overseen by Nintendo's Kensuke Tanabe).

Tbh, I wouldn't be surprised to see a new Mario, and possibly even Zelda, before MP4 finally comes out.

    That looks likely. Mario especially.

There's also Animal Crossing and Bayonetta 3 likely for this year. Yoshi looks solid as well. Oh and proper Pokemon this year.

Wouldn't be surprised to see an uprezzed Samus Returns on Switch to fill the gap now. Or if they're doing an original followup.

Looks like they're clearing the decks of bad news before the next Nintendo Direct. Hopefully there will be some pleasant surprises to balance things out.

Apparently the Switch 2 was really difficult to code for, so they are hoping it will be ready for the console after that.

Yeah personally I'm really happy that nintendo won't be releasing it for at least 4 years.

Let's hope nothing comes out. Give me a chance to clear my crazy backlog of Switch games!!!

Not you but was aimed at everyone that doesn't recognise Nintendos woeful incompetence.

A pathetic release schedule just got a lot worse.

To be fair to Nintendo they do have a fair 1st party output but they just don't have many 3rd party devs putting out decent content. They don't look like starting any time soon either.
