Grim vision of an alien invaded Earth

Probably got more going on in 20 minutes than Elysium did in two hours

    No one?

It's properly messed up, not just another Chappie, seriously. Check it out.

Aye, decent short. Some very nice ideas in there. Found the bomb-maker extremely cheesy/irritating, but otherwise it's fab.

    +1 would see in cinema

Someone has been losing too many X-com campaigns, odd that its linked to Steam Videos.

I don't know how much this cost him but all that alien stuff looks far more realistic than the CGI in Jurassic World or Ant-Man which I've watched the last couple of days

I watched Elysium the other day and whilst it’s pretty damned terrible, the CGI in it is really well done and miles better than most.

    Will have a watch later.

Visuals/world building is definitely Blomkamp's biggest strength over his storytelling

I get the feeling someones pretty paranoid about the Draconians. Good watch for the most part.

Agree with this. The opening third of Rakka is the best.

    Second film up now

A Vietnam horror short. This is such a good project.

Strongly disagree. This looks obviously low budget, because it is. It really lacks polish compared to those two films.

What a wondrous time to be alive eh? These nuggets streamed for free over the air to my handheld device.

They're meant to be proof of concepts right? Rakka felt like an illustrated introduction to a pen and paper RPG. He must have so much fun doing this.

I read an interview with Blomkamp about what he hopes to do with Oats and how he wants to reward contributors.

It does sound like a really great concept. I hope it works out.

I saw that interview too- https://www.polygon.com/2017/6/27/15879506/neill-blomkamp-oats-studios-rakka

Interesting concept, but no idea how it will work.

This one is a little more recent: https://www.theverge.com/2017/6/28/15868776/neill-blomkamp-firebase-experimental-sci-fi-film-watch-interview

Really? Blomkamp's stuff might be a little earthy but I can't think of anything looking as cartoonishly lightweight and fake as even the bird at the start of JW or the gallimimus looking faker than they did in 1993

I watched the first one this morning while I was doing a poo. Makes you wonder why he keeps making shit films when he can do stuff like this.

I enjoyed Firebase a lot more than I did Rakka myself. Rakka just felt too bleak, too gross out as an predator/alien type film, I think. That's my excuse anyway. Firebase can take bleak if it's a vietnam war film, and the reveals worked better for me, which gave me a reward while I watched it. It still has a few to non-sequitur scenes for me personally, and some of the scenes were weirdly/badly set up - like the scene where the guy talking is out of focus in front of the lead dude as they walk away from camera, so you can't even see his mouth. I could only work out he was the one talking when I heard the other two talk, and did it via a process of elimination. I guess it wasn't a critical scene, but it took me out of the moment by making me think about the way it was filmed.

They're both really impressive bits of work though.

I think he's a lot like me. The first 20-30% of a project are fun and exciting. Then it's just a slog to get through. I really like the world-building in all his films. But as films they feel lacking.

These short concepts are perfect for him. He should farm the production out to someone with stamina. Like Carruth or RC Johnson

I guess because he's pretty much tied into the studio telling him what to deliver mostly as an excuse for shit films. District 9 had barely any oversight and was fantastic - Elysium... Not so much.

Just watched Rakka. I would watch a whole movie version of that. Though the dream is for a Black Mirror style series funded by a big company (Netflix, get on it!) Where each week is completely different.

Other than the fenomenal world building I found District 9 to be rather shit personally. Bunch of unlikeable characters doing unlikeable stuff for way too long.

A Black Mirror style Netflix/Amazon type series would be perfect for him

As much as I would have loved to have seen it I can imagine Blomkamp's Alien movie would have fallen into the Alien3 and Resurrection side of things. I really like both but they're not without flaws however good they look.

Can't see the point of a TV series if he continues to put highly concentrated bits of what he does best on YouTube.
