That's insane and can't be true... so I assume it means something different from what I'd expect. |

Yeh I tried a pair of those airpods recently and wasn't impressed with the sound quality. They sound similar to a £10 set of earphones which makes it all the funnier that apple fanatics are willing to pay that insane price for something which is literally manufactured for pennies.
I know sound quality is a subjective thing but I honestly cannot see how anyone can accuse the AirPods of having poor sound quality. I readily admit they don't provide the noise cancelling or soundstage of cans like the Sony MDR 1000 or Bose QC's but then again they are half the price. I was sceptical of them originally but have to say I think they are great...yep, they are a premium price but I honestly think they are worth it...the sound quality is night and day difference between the provided stock buds. They do need to offer them in space grey or black though -

Registered 17 years agoThere's nothing to get worked up about here. If people want to pay upwards of £1K for a phone, then so what?
Most people know that what they are introducing has been around for some time on other alternatives but they just prefer the OS, the look and feel etc. Whatever reason, they just don't like the alternatives. -

"Google the materials" ... er, not that easy to do. You mention the glass... Apple list Corning as one of their suppliers so they probably use a tweaked version of Gorilla Glass (like their premium competitors) but since Apple don't explicitly tell us, we'll never know for sure.

That is nonsense. I will admit that the iphone 6 had some problems, but 'highest failure rate of ANY brand'? No way. And as for low quality materials - have you held an iphone recently? They are premium products.
@nickthegun Yes I agree with that 100%. I am referring more to the fact that Rolex are respected for using extremely high quality materials as well as their products lasting for years and years. Apple on the other hand are known for having the highest failure rate of any phone brand, a result of low quality materials, as well as their products needing replacing ever year or two.
Rolex's increase in value over time, Apple's decrease.
Premium product!! The only thing premium is the price and packaging. Honestly Google the materials, the glass is particularly low quality and easily shattered. Speakers low quality, metal is a composite that is easily dented...
I mean you just have to look at how many people smash their phone screens to kmow its not a durable or well built product.
Many many reviews talk about how great the camera is (whether it's best or not is probably a bit subjective, but its inarguably very good), and how the fit and finish of the phone is excellent. The touch ID sensor is class leading. You can tell me that the Samsung S8 is better and I might accept that (I don't know), but to say that the iPhone is low quality is just ridiculous. -

Registered 16 years agoIm still quite surprised that apple bought beats but dont sling a beats x or something in the box or even have the airpods beats branded.
And, wrt reliability, apple phones seem at least as robust as any other handset unless you have a model that has a bonafide manufacturing defect. My step-mum had a 6+ that got the grey bar of death and had it swapped for three replacements until they finally sorted out the manufacturing process. -

Registered 4 years agoI've had every iPhone since the original launch one. I had the notorious headphone jack problem with my original phone but managed to get that swapped out for the 3G revision when it launched. I have never had a single issue with every subsequent iPhone I've owned. My only gripe which was self inflicted was being stuck with the 6s Plus for about 18 months which I came to quickly realise was a big mistake as found it just too big. -

I recently frustrated a colleague by using Spotify's equlizer on my phone with ear(not air)buds until their sound wasn't a million miles away from his Sennheiser 600 HD and headphones amp he has in the office.

Anyway, the airpods aren't brilliant, but they do not sound like your average 10 quid earphones. They are fairly neutral (too much bass though), and neutral headphones always throw people off who are used to earphones with a, say, banana-shaped frequency response. Our ears are mean, we don't like sound we're not used to.

Registered 10 years ago@Mfolf I've had the headphone jack fail three times, where the phone was sporadically in a state where it thought headphones were connected (so no sound output from the earpiece and mic disabled), and my 6s had to be repaired because of the widespread battery issue.
I took good care of them (barely a scratch on them) and carried them in my pocket without a case. So with 3 different models failing because of the same exact hardware issue points to it being because of my usage habits (but I refuse to say it was my fault, as I used them as intended). -

Registered 4 years agoI suppose I'm classed as an Apple fanboy. Before the first iPhone launched I would literally change my phone on a monthly basis. I would chop and change from Sony Ericsson to Nokia going through all the different models etc...the only phone I can remember sticking with for anytime was the SE P800i which was like a PDA style handset. Since the iPhone launched I have to say I've never been remotely tempted by any other phone. Blinkered maybe but just the way it is. Interestingly I used to be exactly the same with watches...buying and flipping them constantly. Since I got the series 2 watch I've not even bothered looking at other watches. I honestly can't imagine having any other watch now. -

It probably just means MacBooks will be at least £2k from now on. -

Registered 12 years agoI donnow, I always thought iphones were very much upper middle class, like expensive but still doable. Like it always was a little crazy, but you could still get it past the missus because you use it all the time or whatever. But this is just, wow, so far past what I feel is sensible.
And I'm a tech nerd and I'm doing alright for myself. -

I don't think anyone apart from the most mental Apple fanboys are thinking, 'new iphone or new macbook'. They're different tools for different purposes and different users - I don't see why their prices should be compared in any way really.

That option is still there. I was reading an article earlier by a self-proclaimed apple fan who is going to skip the iPhone X and just go for the 8. The metaphor used was that Apple have delivered a Ferrari but have still kept a Honda in the drive for people who just want an iPhone to listen to music, take a few snaps and look at instagram.

That 'upper middle class' tier is still there, they have just added a Made in Chelsea bracket above it.
Which, I think, is the way im going to go. I will have to try before I buy because im not hugely sold on the 'standard' one being all glass now.
