Registered 16 years agoOh hi! I was looking for the thread where people who've never designed, engineered or produced anything in their entire lives criticise the latest Apple release, whilst nodding sagely and calling them a brainwashing cul...
Oh. Right. I'm here. -

Registered 20 years agoIt's expensive but come on folks, other than your bed I I doubt there's a consumer product you own that you use more than your phone. OK, for some you can stick your console and/or PC there but for a great many people, who admirably or not, spend 4-6 hours a day on their phone, spending over a grand on it works out at about 25-30 pence an hour over a two year contract. -
Had an iPhone for years, understand they sell at a premium, but is this the point where the world wakes up and goes 'Fuck No'. It's in MacBook territory, and what, nearly twice the price of an S8. Who am I kidding, it will sell out. -

Registered 4 years agoThat was all pretty weird. A grands worth of tech shoehorned into the iPhone X and all that they could push as it's USP was animated emojis. Whilst the borderless screen is nice I think the top cutout looks atrocious...like someone has slapped on a cheap screen protector.

Registered 15 years agoI dont think it is as future-proof as they think it is. I doubt that form factor will see another 10 years. Cool that they managed to get the phone into the watch though. -

I think face ID just replaced that. It's not as if your bank has a copy of your fingerprints.

The face id looks infinitely better than the competition (and no doubt will be) but I think Touch ID is fucking genius and has permanently changed how I interact with my phone and I don't want to lose it. Curious if front facing portrait camera is as good as the one of 7plus which takes amazing pics.
The keynote did emphasise that the front facing camera on the X would be taking advantage of all the gubbins used for the facial recognition and would be a market leader. You can even use the studio lighting feature on it IIRC. -

SME HERE: No, it didnt. The API is leveraged to work with fingerprints. You need to update the backend infrastructure to now work with faceID which, I can tell you for a fact, is not even close to happening.

It doesnt store your fingerprints, but it requires confirmation that your authenticated device has successfully processed it. No fingerprint, no handshake.

Registered 12 years agoI can't use the thing for work. I get emails while driving. I know I shouldn't read them, but they are short messages saying "client X called, please call them back on xxxxxx" . I tap the number and done. Carplay doesn't have an email app, only sms. If now I need to hold up my phone to my face and actually look at it too unlock that's just not feasible. Carplay just sucks balls anyhow, and they don't allow any apps to actually use it, like waze. -

Registered 4 years agoI love my series 2 Apple Watch up to the point of selling my Breitling Seawolf last year as I'm convinced I'd never go back to a traditional watch. I'm a bit confused as to what the non cellular version of the series 3 actually offers as an upgrade/improvement over the series 2? It actually looks as if Apple have changed the crown indent to red now just so you can reassure your contemporaries that it is the series 3 you are rocking.

I get that people use their phones a lot but what are you doing with your phone? I surf the internet, use the Reddit and various info / sports apps. Read kindle and Newsify. Track my workouts. Take pictures of my kids. Pay for lunch.
I can't think of a single thing apart from the better camera that I'd actually notice with an 8 or X over a 6S.
