It's not for me personally, but for folks who buy expensive watches and cars and post on rich kids of instagram it probably is.

I think folks are underestimating how bored apple fans had become with the iphone 6 style design which is over 3 years old.

Whether or not this phone does anything particularly different, it looks different, and it DOES have big upgrades in all departments, screen size, screen techology, camera, processor - it'll be a massive jump from my iphone 6s.

Also most folks wont be shelling out £1k for it, they'll be shelling out £60 a month, and they (wrongly) won't notice that as much, or realise the total cost of the phone.

But then you are looking at someone who bought every ipad model for the first 5 or 6 years or so because the next one was slightly thinner or had a retina screen or was "mini"... i only stopped 2/3 years ago because the upgrades weren't worth it

My facial tech is better than apple's.

    I'm genuinely intrigued.

The keynote meeting earlier this year didn't really sell it to me and yet I was ready for a new device at that point. I need to see some real-world reviews after a month of use. Apple Pay is a good example. I use that a lot. It's convenient and works for the majority of the time (I'm on a 1st gen sensor). The idea of FaceID sounds, in theory, like it adds an extra inconvenience to just taking the phone out of a pocket and placing it on the POS. I'd be happy to be wrong on that though.

As for the cost of it. Sure, it's a lot but as someone that has always picked up a device on a monthly tariff with say 4GB-8GB data these things have always been costly - coming in at around £40-£50 a month.

The iPhone X on Sky Mobile is £52 a month. It doesn't seem massively different on the monthly outgoing to me.

Just had a quick look. iPhone X on the deal I want is £1248

    Pixel 2+ = £1200

The Galaxy S8 equivalent is £972. That's still not cheap.

    They're all stupid money.

I really don’t think it is. I work in what would be considered the epitome of big swinging dick/swag world and no one gives a fuck what phone you use. If anything itnonly comes up in a reverse fashion, people being embarrassed by having the fancy brand new phone.

May be different with teens and the like though.

I don’t think the new Face ID stuff should be dismissed so easily either. It really is revolutionary tech. And even your average tech pleb will know enough to know how awful the likes of Samsung’s facial tech is compared to this.
I'm not necessarily talking about those people though. For example where my wife's family lives in the northeast, no one is especially wealthy but they all drive Audis and better. They will want to be seen out with the iPhone X. I expect there are plenty of people like that.

I'm just responding to comments on here along the lines of "the specs aren't that special, why are people bothering?". I'm saying plenty of people won't even look at the spec sheet before buying one.

I got a Samsung because it was the cheapest flagship at the time and I figured that if it blew up, they would replace it.

I know a guy whose Note got recalled, then he immediately bought a Galaxy S AND now the latest Note. Doesn't seem to have hurt them at all, and it's not as if there aren't Android alternatives available, even if he doesn't switch to iPhone.

People buying a samsung after the blowing up and them being rabid or loyal are very different things.

Each time I’ve got a new phone it’s been because at that time the phone had the best features and/or was closest to what I really want.

I’ve switched between android and iOS regularly and there’s very little overall difference now. Android is a bit more flexible, has the option of proper Adblocking etc, iOS simplifies things a bit and has more apps that I’d bother with.

Hardware wise they’re all much the same now. I usually upgrade every 18 months or so but it’s reached a point now where, as long as the battery and hardware doesn’t give up on my, it’ll be fine for 3+ years.

Ah the old "I know you are but what am I?" defense. Ok good luck with that.

Brand loyalty to android? I don’t think that’s a thing.

Hey guys! Look at my operating system!

You really think I have't tried an iPhone before? I went with android because I don't particularly like iTunes and I think iphones are overpriced for what they are. I got a Samsung because I read a bunch of reviews and they all said it was the best one. As all phones are much of a muchness now I'll probably get something different next time like a Pixel or an HTC.

Your the only one who's been going "ermagurd I tried android once and it was so so awful that I couldn't even make a call without being sick. Samsung blow up planes, fuck Samsung." Because you're a big fat fanboy.

Ok, you went through a selection process for your phones...great, but are quite happy to trot out the tiresome trope of 'rabid Apple fanbois' because there are people who made a different choice.

Well the people getting their X today would have ordered and paid for it before any reviews came out so it isn't really the same selection process as Decks is describing.

Hands on conducted in a very limited time in an Apple controlled environment, hardly a real world test. I'd imagine if you went back the Note 7 probably had some pretty glowing hands on impressions.

As for IOS that may be true to a certain extent but face unlocking and the impact of the notch were still massive unknowns. Plenty of Apple buyers are making informed choices on the best phone but I'm not sure people that pre-order a new handset with a radically different design before waiting for real world reviews fall in to that group.

I don't mind expensive if it does something new or is way better in some form. Only thing I like about it is the bigger screen. Camera processor and face unlock are something I don't need, my current phone is fast enough and takes nice pics.

I can really feel the strain of trying to justify buying one of these things on this page.

See my iPhone 6s pics look fine on phone but when I get a lot of them blown up to print or on pc they can look a bit fuzzy.

With the kids now those are the only pics i take of them so the camera upgrade is huge for me.

I genuinely think that's the biggest driver for a lot of people. The camera wasn't great at all on my old phone and was definitely the thing that eventually pushed me to upgrade.
