Heya fellow travelers. A noobish question for thee: how can I deal strategically with poison attacks?

I have only four hours of experience with Octopath and I am not a seasoned rpg gamer. So for instance, early on I had to defest a snake boss in a cave somewhere. My Ďtacticí to counter his poison attacks was to stack up on health items.

Not strategic at all.... So can I find or buy anti poison gear later on in the game? Or is there a typical rpg way of dealing with these type of attacks that make it more rewarding or strategic than just buying potions...

    Thanks!

Do you have the medic character, Alfyn? His skills let you cure multiple people at once, and also prevent them from being afflicted in future turns.

And there's some accessory that protects against poison, though I can't remember how common it is.

What about items that cure poison too rather than just topping up your health?

@Mola_Ram Oh thanks! I have Alfyn in my team indeed and I have tinkered with his concoct ability a little. Will look into his abilities better.

    Thanks so much.

I bought this at launch and say on it up until a few days ago. What have I been doing? This is great! Pure retro goodness with a satisfying combat system to boot.

I'm about to pick up my last character, Alfyn with 15 hours on the clock. I'm trying not to settle on a definitive team, just so all the characters have a chance at levelling up, but Ophillia is proving to be a major player. Her healing can make things so much easier. It feels almost game breaking as I can drag a level 5 or 6 character through a boss battle if she's in the party too.

H'annit is probably my favourite character, though. She's very flexible, in terms of attacks. Therion is my main character, though. I picked him at random, but his steal ability has cone in very handy.

This game has now become my bedtime pastime, which means my sleep is suffering. It's so good, though.

Glad you are enjoying it. I lost patience after the first chapters and two of the second chapters.

Firstly the game felt hugely disjointed what with jumping between characters all the time. The length of time between completing the first chapter for a character and the second chapter was ridiculous.

Secondly I hated that characters you didnít have in your party were left behind in level terms.

And finally god damn it became a slog. The last chapter 2 battle involved me grinding levels for 2 hours and then the battle itself took 45 minutes. At which point I realised that I would eventually get to a boss battle that I lost after 30 minutes and there was no way in hell I would be bothered to repeat it.

Tressa is my main. Loving H'aanit and Cyrus too.

Tend to cycle in one of the others with these three. Unless it's Olberic why replaces H.

Edit can't get the name of my main right

There was a bit of grinding for me, but usually I was fine with my main (Tressa) and Cyrus, rotating the other two positions.

I find some missions have quite high damage output monsters. I've just gotten to the chapter 3s and some of the incoming damage is quite high, and I'm reckoning more than anything I'm going to have to go on a gear hunt to take the edge off it.

I've mostly gone for a core party of Primrose, H'aanit, and Therion and swap the fourth in and out.

I don't really mind grinding in Octopath though because I like the combat system on its own terms.

Five chapter 4 down and nearing the end.

Started great, was fucking awful moving from chapter 1 to 2 with the jump and atupod grinding needed.

But 3s and 4s have been great. However starting to get boring again now. Chapter 3s were a wide range so you could build up. Chapter 4 is all level 45. So the first was tricky, second was a little easier etc. But now it is no challenge at all. After 5 level 45 chapters all my guys are 50 plus, by the time I do the 8th it will just be tedious. I wish they did a bit of level scaling at this point.

At that point I just wanted to see the ends of all the stories, and most of them were (imo) pretty good.

But I agree that the difficulty is a bit spiky. The hardest boss in the game was Alfyn's chapter 3 (or 2?) boss, the guy with all the spears. Pretty much everything else was relatively easy, aside from the optional bosses.

Tressa was my favourite character. I think Cyrus is easily the most powerful and my main was Primrose who helped in making Cyrus overpowered. (I could easily kill all normal enemies within 2 turns, usually just 1).

I have a Therian / Cyrus main pairing. Cyrus with his double magic attacks is my main enemy breaking attack.

I've not yet felt the need to grind. By the time I reached Aflyn, my main was the level recommended for his 2nd chapter. If anything, I've been a little over-powered for the last couple of chapter 1 bosses. I chose specifically not to equip a skill that reduced random encounters, though.

Cyrus has a pretty dangerous ability that allows you to reveal enemy weakness. I got a little carried away trying to reveal all the enemy weakness in his area. I think it's a weird completionist's thing I've got.

I never really felt the need to grind either. Can only remember dying once which was for the final boss of my main characterís story. (Think there was 1 earlier instance too but cannot picture it).

Half way through chapter twos. Just done H'aanit's. 30 bloody hours! What should I expect on the clock for all chapters/characters? 80?

I've probably been dawdling then! At least two characters are still massively underlevelled compared to my top 3 (all about 35).

It took me 15 hours just too do the first set of chapters. I guess fast travelling will speed that up?

I've just discovered an enemy that is this game's Metal Slime. Had one character jump from level 16 to 20 in one battle. Nice!

@DangerousDave_87 I had that once! All damage to it and by it was 1, then I ended up with about 1100 exp!

Yeah, that's the one. I think the bonus XP was around 130. I was only looking for chests outside of a town that I was planning to start a 2nd chapter for. I fear I may now be over-levelled. Will need to swap out a few characters later tonight.

Unfortunately those cat things are hard to find, and harder to kill. I only managed to kill one throughout the whole game.

    @Murbs

Octopath took me 80 hours for all characters. (Didnít do the post credit stuff though because I only found out today there was any).

I think there are a few different types of cat. All are really hard to hit. Very much a metal slime equivalent.

I've also discovered that if you share SP in battle, whomever you share it with can carry more than they should be able to. That is to say H'aanit had 79/63 SP in my last battle. Pretty handy to know!

12 chapters down and 30 hours on the clock. I only just realised there's a particular order to them as each chapter's level requirements differ. It means I found Cyrus' 2nd chapter a bit of a slog, but Tressa's a breeze.

Anyone have any tips for secondary jobs? I'm not sure how to decide who gets what job.

You can switch them around at will, so don't worry too much about giving people the proper secondary job.

For me it was mostly about getting people useful passive skills. So (for example) I'd give Cyrus the Merchant job, so he could learn the skill that halves magic costs.
