Posting in the MvC Infinite thread and talking about Seth of SF4 and the thread on 100 toughest bosses, it's got me thinking of bosses that were ridiculously cheap with their game breaking invincibility frames, unblockable one hit kill moves and stupid RNG. My vote goes to:

    Seth (Street Fighter 4)
Shiva (Streets of Rage 2+3) Actually most bosses in Sor3
    Jinpachi (Tekken 5)
    Orange (Gunstar Heroes)

Gill is cheaper than Seth. Seth can't resurrect himself.

Honestly, any boss that uses infinite spawning minions as cover for a lack of actual mechanics in itself. Spending three quarters of your time killing the same little grunts you've been killing all game to add 'difficulty' to an encounter does not a good boss make.

I'd say King of Fighters bosses are cheaper than the SF4 ones.

Sephiroth. His summons are so long you fall asleep and he wins by meta.

The 20th kingdom of Streetpass Battle. Literally just an RNG to which you have no influence.

I remember the boss at the end of the first BioShock game being a bit naff. Didn't seem to really fit with the rest of the game.

@JamboWayOh I've not played a lot of Streets of Rage 3 as it is pretty garbage. Think I made it through the awful buldozer chase and fought mecha Axel (not joking, that is a thing). I recall being surprised that Shiva appeared on the first stage though.

In Streets of Rage 2 he is tough, but I wouldn't say cheap. Hardest boss in SoR2 is probably Red Bear on the ship level.
Hmm I'd probably put my vote in for the two Robots boss, firing lasers across the screen combined with their massive whirly arms meant you could be focusing one down and get shot in the back from the other.

Random fact you probably already know. SoR3 suffered from the 'bump up the difficulty a notch in the west' problem that a lot of games had (including Battletoads). Where Medium in the western release was actually Hard in the Japanese release. This was because of the games rental market and designed to keep people renting the game over and over again until they beat it.

Not only that but for some reason they did that god awful colour change to all the characters in SoR3 western release to be more 'gender neutral' while the return characters kept their original colours in the Japanese release.

It also had the story completely butchered, had bosses/secret character removed (Shiva in the first level replaces Ash...seriously google SoR3 Ash and you'll see why) and generally was an inferior version to the Japanese release (not being a weeabo here, it geninuely is a worse version of the game).

Still the game did let you play as Shiva if you did a button press when you defeated him and held it down until the next level loaded (this unlocked Ash in the Japanese release but you could still unlock Shiva later as well)...he was hilariously broken as a player character.

The final boss in Quantum Break is my most recent example.

edit: dammit, didn't read up. o/ Hey tricky, i mentioned him.

edit 2: also one of my favourite bosses ever now but pre internet psycho mantis was a bitch..

    @Jim_Dix

Nah, Shiva in SoR 2 is proper cheap the fact that he has the longest invincibility frames than any other boss and is able to cancel the invincibility you get when you do a move like Axel's grand upper confirms it. Actually Mr X was also cheap by being able to shoot off screen and still melee with his gun and you weren't able to hit him because he was too far off screen.

v2 obviously went defective as well. Bound to happen eventually. These things aren't built to last.

Bed of Chaos from Dark Souls. I'm pretty sure it's impossible beat it in a single attempt. It doesn't help that the nearest bonfire is quite a trek even if you just run past the enemies on route.

annoying thing is that they have given up trying to upgrade between versions :(
