Yo, so I live in London and I wanna buy a PS3 slim from CeX. My main goal is to hack it and instal Rebug CFW. Before I head there I just wanna know will they let me try before I buy? Can I connect this to a TV in store and pretend I wanna check it out (when really I wanna make sure the OFW is 3.55 or below)
I really dont wanna pay an extra £30 for a downgrade

Nope. They check the consoles themselves before they accept them so I don't see them letting a customer try one.

Your chances of finding a 3.55 or lower PS3 in CEX are next to zero. Seriously.

If you want one of those, you're either headed to eBay, or else paying for a downgrade.

Why not just get one from ebay? You're presumably going to be getting all your games for free anyway so just suck it up.

Imagine having to pay an extra 30 quid before you can pirate all the games. The sheer nerve of it, do they think you have a job or something?

    It's not as if PS3 games are super expensive...unless you're a cheapass?

I was being charitable and assuming he wanted to install Linux on it...

It reminds me of my mate who got his 360 chipped even though he has a really well paying job. The irony was that he couldn't go online and his Xbox red ringed but he couldn't get it repaired for free as they would know he'd chipped it.

A lot of the people above me at work have kodi sticks and illegally download all their music, and here's me, the broke ass chump paying for Netflix, BT Sport and my music. It's how the rich stay rich I guess. I often wonder why I bother.

    @BigOrkWaaagh

In a lot of countries that I've been to in Asia, people look at you weird when you say you buy music or any form of consumable media.

I've cut down on the number of CDs I buy, but I've increased the number of DRM free albums I've bought through bandcamp and label websites. I rip all my CDs these days and put them in the loft, so I end up with basically the same thing as long as it's flac.

Does the really hot woman work at the Hounslow branch still? She's lovely but fairly racist.

Netflix and Spotify are so cheap, and so convenient, you really do need to be morally deficient to knick films or music these days.

Spotify isn't known for paying artists' bills, but don't let that topple you from your moral high ground of paying for unlimited access for a nominal fee.
Might as well just nick it then!

Don't buy anything from CEX, especially a machine with optical media. I bought a Dreamcast once which didn't read discs. Took it back and they said they would test it again, and that it worked fine. I kicked off and said their testing process doesn't give me confidence when they sold me a broken machine.

I brought my own games in, they agreed to test it. The GD Rom drive made a noise like when you put your car in the wrong gear, and they gave me my money back. This was after about 3-4 visits and a load of arguing.

They're cunts. Don't bother. You've got much better protection on eBay as a buyer that a horrible little pawn shop like CEX.

They do have rigid policies, which is hardly a surprise given they're a chain. If they have to see the fault first, they have to see it. I bet they get all sorts of crack addicts trying to refund things simply because they don't want it or they've since broken it.

Still, as others have said, try online. Or at least a smaller chain that can agree special terms with you before selling.

There’s no moral high ground in play here.
