I don't see much racism on Eurogamer or on well moderated subreddits.

People here were not banned for racism. They were banned for disagreeing with the majority opinion in a thread or just being insufficiently enthusiastic about whatever game the owner decided was good.

When it comes to game sites I find it impossible to avoid racism, sexism, transphobia or homophobia. I only went here (where it's impossible to discuss anything reasonable) or Neogaf (where posters have a brain).

What do you class as "think for themselves"?

Next to Eurogamer, I frequented and posted on Neogaf quite a bit. It had its issues with some posters being a little too holier-than-thou, but I always found some great discussions in both the gaming and non-gaming forums, as well as finding a variety of music, videos and GIFs. Much like Reddit, it is what you make of it. Hope it comes back.

Terrible site a hive mind can't disagree with anything without being banned

I was banned, without any warning or prior misdeeds, for making a post in a thread about Anita Sarkeesian. It was shortly after her video about Batman wearing a cape and male characters usually being more covered up.

One specific example used was the guy from Watch_Dogs. I just pointed out that long coats are often associated with a character not wanting to be seen or noticed in the media - the stereotypical spy wears a trench coat, for instance - so the choice of attire said something about Aiden.

Unfortunately the person i was speaking to turned out to be a mod, who banned me with the message 'we don't need any more people disagreeing with Anita here'.

Zero-tolerance on racism and sexism etc is a good thing. Zero tolerance on not towing the party line when it comes to Anita Sarkeesian... not so much.

The result was a place that was more polite than the usual gaming forum, but not necessarily any more intelligent.

I'm not bitter about it though. My posting habits there were even more sporadic than they are here.

I must admit it's kind of weird. One of the few good things about NeoGaf was the zero tolerance policy against sexism... and then its owner gets accused of exactly that, with half the mods still supporting him (though to their credits, the other half seems to have left in disgust - although I wonder if they knew and simply jumped ship because the situation got too hot).

Oh. I missed the meltdown. (I was busy playing video games!)

I liked the NeoGaf. The hype threads in a build up to the release of a new game were fun. And I liked the fact that the perceived exclusivity meant that I never signed up, and didn't feel any need to contribute.

Sure, they could take videogames a little too seriously at times, but that was actually kind of cute.

I wasn't allowed to sign up with my email so I dressed provocatively and followed the owner to a bar....

I'm a bit sore but my revenge is complete.

It is a useful site for news and has some great, genuine people on it who i play with in Live/PC.

It also has thousands of kids desperate to sound srs and grownup by posting cliched thread after cliched thread about how a scene in MGS is the Greatest Cutscene Ever. Not gonna miss that shit.

I didn't mind Neogaf. The OT forum was good, many hilarious threads in it. Was good for getting beta keyz too. I even sold a LBP beta key to someone for a fiver.

Did get banned a couple of times. Highlight was prob our EG vs GAF Killzone 2 clan match, which we thumped them in.

I visited the site often. I quite liked the community more or less bar a few as with anywhere and the discussions were good and alive. Was a fun place. The forum layout, shortcuts, mobile or desktop was one of the more appealing aspects when so many sites are pretty awful. At least EG is up there.

Had no idea about the darker side until this, wtf was that, never heard anything like that except overzealous mods. The
pedo guy too, the mods and owner response. Shameful.

I hope the format somehow lives on with
different owners or people migrate to something similar. EG has been great over years but does have it's quiet moments. I think GAF members would be alright here or anywhere else, never understood the hate, repetitive maybe but not everyone is young or old, plays every game years before. People get around to games and talk about them. I get GAF can move very fast sometimes but you get use to it, pop in later when the fever has broke.

There were too many people posting to really have an kind of decent discussions and most of those posts were low-effort craps like reaction GIFs.

In smaller game threads you could find likeminded people. That was the good side. The badside was big threads were hivemind bullshit console warz, or really tired political 'analysis' via meme. Smaller better.

I enjoyed it. I went for the gaming and stayed for the off topic.

I’ll miss Off topic community. The creative communities especially.

It is a shame. I liked that it was left leaning, although in the last year or so a noisy minority became increasingly sanctimonious with their purity tests and such, which was a drag.

I hope it can be resurrected.

Don't think there's been a proper meltdown on there for a while.

Mario getting 10s (assuming it does) isn't really going to sent PS4/One users crazy as it's pretty much expected.

    Edit: Just read OP. Oh...

Has the guy been accused or found guilty? Because in this day and age being accused is tantamount to guilt in a lot of people's eyes.
  • Deleted user 22 October 2017 11:24:00
I think I've just read the accusation. He went on a road trip with a female friend. They drank she got ill and went for a shower. He got in the shower. She told him she didn't want him there, he left and then was stroppy with her ever since.

    Er, is that the accusation?

I quite liked it there. No account, and no desire to even try and set one up, but the discussion was always interesting. There were some scumfucks and the fanboy viewpoints there could be excrutiating sometimes, but I can't remember ever seeing a user being banned for something they didn't deserve honestly, at least in the last few years I've been lurking there. The zero tolerance to all aggressive confrontation, be it racism, sexism, homophobia, or general arsehole behaviour to others was refreshing.

That said, if these allegations are true, then I'm glad it's burnt down. The guy sounds like a complete cunt, and it seems the mods and users there agreed.

I was a member there, but didn't post much. Had no idea about any of the internal politics, so this is very sad. I already feel lost without Neogaf to browse :( As in, there were some great aspects to that community - I hope some arrangement can bring it back in future.

This looks like a decent summary of the situation:
