Its the marvel way now
Feels like there was a memo to 'make sure there's a joke every 2 minutes, regardless of what else is going on in the scene' at some point -
Even with the jokes to undercut it I think the action here still felt more emotionally engaging than the last few Marvel films (or other comic films, come to that).

It's really not, unless you're suggesting this is the start and Infinity War is going to be a comedy?

Registered 7 years agoThey do overdo the humour in a few of the films, there are far too many characters trying to be funny ask the time. Grax in GotG2 was terrible for it. -

Spider-man was the last film, but even excluding that I'm not sure I agree (Marvel specifically - its miles ahead of the DC stuff).

The action here is very much a video game fight every time. It was either one person laying waste to an army single handed or two slugging it out at each other (Hulk and Thor). It was only Heimdall that felt particularly vulnerable.
I was actually impressed with Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, I thought she was pretty good here (she normally annoys me), and Elba is always good. I hoped he'd have a part to play in Infinity War but he's not listed. -

Funny you say that when Bones/Dredd jumped out of the...my missus said and I quote " it is like one of your games"

I hope not but most marvel films try and chuck in as many jokes as possible per scene at the moment. Earlier films had a better mix but it does depend on the film. GotG works but IW would suffer for it.

Registered 12 years agoTBF it is a film about an alien Norse god and his giant green pal. -
The humour here was very much Taika Waititi's comedy. It really did feel like the same humour found in 'What We Do In The Shadows' and 'Hunt For The Wilderpeople.'
I guess time will tell, but I disagree that his style of humour ruins repeated viewings. -

I'm going to lump with the "humour going way too overboard" camp on this occasion. It was a fun and hilarious ride, but the excesses of humour ended up diminishing the dramatic impact of the movie.
I mean, for fuck's sake, the movie ends with the complete destruction of Asgard, and by the time the movie is over, many of the secondary protagonists, who have been a major part of the trilogy (Odin, Hogun, Volstagg, Fandral, probably Sif as well) are dead.
Speaking of which, I found the way the Warriors Three were sent off to be fucking insulting. If you look up the production background of the film, you do get the sense that they originally planned for Lady Sif to go out guns blazing in a huge fight with Hela, before they discovered at the last minute that Jaimie Alexander wasn't available, so they dragged in Ray Stevenson and Zachary Levi spontaneously to do a quick shoot to replace her.
And while Anthony Hopkins put in a decent final performance as Odin, you get the feeling that his early final scene was rushed together hastily as well. Apparently there was meant to be this huge hunt through New York on the search for Odin, but it felt like they had to condense the whole thing down to a couple of minutes on a moment's notice (if you look at the early trailer, the scene where Hela destroys Mjölnir was clearly supposed to be set in New York, but somehow this got transposed to Norway for the final edit, and the shot of Cate Blanchett keeping Mjölnir clearly had the Norway background amateurishly CG'ed in.
Still, even if every new character felt like they were there to provide comic relief (Skurge, Korg, Grandmaster), all the jokes sat well. I thought Korg in particular was one of the most likeable characters I've even seen in the MCU.
But it still felt like a very compromised film. -

Registered 14 years agoI'm still trying to figure out how I failed to recognise Matt Damon and Sam Neill (I'll accept not really knowing about younger brother Luke Hemsworth) in the "death of Loki" play, at the start of the film. -

Registered 17 years agoThe second Thor film would be the worst in the MCU if not for the Incredidible Hulk, yeah (though it still has some good stuff - the death of Frigga was handled much better than Odin, for example), and the first film has issues. But they match the 2 Avengers films for the character, where this goes off on a tangent.
This won’t be the direction it follows. Infinity War is going to instantly ditch everything this film built towards and make Thor serious again. -
Dark World would be the worst in the MCU if it wasn't for The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2, you mean.
Whilst I fully expect Infinity War to be more serious than this, it's not like the Marvel films have been humour free.
To be honest I find the first Thor pretty damn funny. The fish-out-of-water stuff is great. Hard to see Thor as being super serious when you recall the pet store scene. And the bickering been Thor and Loki in 2 isn't all that different here.
Besides anything, what's wrong with films having different tones? If they were all serious all the time it'd be tiresome. Black Panther looks like it'll be on the serious side of the MCU, along with Winter Soldier.
I love the first Thor movie, it's pretty much on the top tier of MCU films for me. And I have no problem with the direction Ragnarok took, nor do I think this film is removed from the MCU. It fits right in.

Registered 17 years agoI don't think its removed from the MCU - its a GotG film more or less. My issue is that it doesn't fit with Thor very well when its a laugh a minute, plus all the other things (the move from magic tech. to straight up guns and spaceship tech, brushing over the deaths of important characters). I'm all up for having differing tones but they need to be by sub-franchise, not mix'n'match depending on the director.
I enjoyed it; it's a good film. It's just a little off target for the character, imo.
I probably rate IM2 and Dark World about even. -

Registered 4 years agoI thought it was great, an amusing script and fantastic use of slapstick to deflate people when they thought they were cool, and some super fun action scenes. Also, I like a more talky Hulk and fights too. -

Agree with your summing up of the second film, I would think the worst MC film to date. However the first film was great.
