There won't be console parity between the Switch and PS4 versions - how could there be? They'd be massively underselling the PS4 (not to mention the Xbone X) if there were. It'll be like Skyrim probably, where the Switch version sits somewhere between the original and the PS4/XB1 remaster.

Oh and something something Grax you'll never make it ahahahaha

The Surge is on my watchlist. If the complete version goes on sale this year, then I'm having it.

As tempting as Dark Souls is... the only game in the Souls/bloodborne series I haven't beaten is Demons Souls so I should probably go back to that first :D

    One of these years!

Not including Demons Souls because lets be honest, Dark is the real kick off point for most people
Yeah, well I played BB as my first and the one's I mentioned offer distinct variations on the same theme. DS feels more similar than different, though I know it is different.

    @monkman76

I guess not. I suppose it really depends on how good the Switch version is. It's not clear yet how much of a visual/performance improvement they're pushing for. If it's modest then the PS4/XB1 versions might not be that much better.

Oh I know, but it's also the same as saying you can buy Tesco brand, Asda brand, some other weird off brand types of cola - so why would you ever want to drink Coca-Cola?

I see it more like Coke vs Pepsi vs Dr Pepper.
    I don't drink Coke.

Well these are stupid analogies. Not playing dark souls because you have the surge is stupidity.

edit: but the idea is to not buy games and clear out your backlog so fair enough.

I don't have the Surge, I'm just more interested in it than DS.

@Derblington I have it (and played it), i can tell you that DS is the superior game but then, that means nothing.

Ok, I've given this some thought. Probably too much really, but here are the rules I'm playing by:

    Counts as a purchase:

    Purchases (obviously).
    Purchases with gifted credit.
Renewal of Xbox Live sub (as I'm purchasing it for the "free" games).
Renewal of EA Access sub (as I'm purchasing it for the games).
Purchases of DLC for games given away with Gold/EA Access (as the "free" game now has an associated cost).

    Doesn't count as a purchase:

Games given away with Xbox Live/EA Access.
DLC for games that I have already purchased.

On the whole I think that's a perfectly reasonable and workable solution.

I'm using Phattso's rules on 'free' games from sub services. I'll generally claim everything I'm offered but I'm very picky about what I download as that's when I consider them part of the backlog, so I'll be counting those.

Come on people. Stay strong! Buy the things you really want, and just be happy to commit to them.

This is why I think the budget idea works better. The thread is going to progress with ludicrous happenings to circumvent the rules. E.g :

I had the discs on the window and the wind blew then off into the garden and the dog ate them. Do they count ?

In a fit of rage when I refused to stop playing my wife smashed the disc. Does it count ?

I was in hospital and there was a bloke handing out free games does it count ?

My PS4 broke and I decided to get an xbox instead. Does it count ?

I sicked up on the disc and it melted. Does it count ?

    Etc etc.

The problem with budget is that you could feasibly buy upwards of 20 games, which isn't going to help the majority of people going about playing the stuff they really care about when 30 is probably about the average per year for most people here anyway.
It's an easy system to game in itself, hunting out and justifying bargains because they're cheap. That's the problem that put most people in this thread.

A limit on the number of purchases is the simplest rule for the majority, even if the number is somewhat unique to each individual. Once you have your rules set out there's no getting around them as the year progresses so your limit on titles is still in place.

Plus I don't usually spend that much on games - most of them I pick up cheap or second hand. I'm sticking to the rules - used up 2 of the 10 and I'm happy not to buy any for a good while. Deus Ex, Horizon, Until dawn and Second Son( both from backlog), should be plenty for at least three months for me.

I think replacements for stolen or damaged games are fine as it fits within the idea that you're trying to maximise your experience of each game you play. Getting freebies counts if you choose to give those games a proper go. It counts as one of your 10 games.

Although a fair few of us are inspired to do this in order to save a bit of money, it's about not playing too many games that you don't truly appreciate what you have.

We all do it. We buy something and play it heavily, only until the next shiny game shows up and then we either abandon the first game or rush through it in order to start the next new game. Having a budget or trying to squeeze in freebies is besides the point.

I guess if you played 10 small games and felt you had got as much enjoyment out of them as possible, then perhaps you could exceed 10 games and not feel bad about it.

    No.

The idea is fine, it's the excuse making that's setting new precedents.

People cracking and failing is part of the fun, your amassing of a a backlog is completely counter but I've already said my piece.

As for the Direct. Some nice announcements but nothing to make me think I'll fail the challenge

Hmm, so I traded Fractured But Whole for Yakuza Kiwami. Installed Uncanny Valley from this month's PS+. Oh, and bought Bastion (again) from the PSN sale.

    I can do this!

Finished my first game of the year today, Splatoon 2. Spent a fair amount on it over the course of it's release. Will spend some more time online for sure. Might do the weapons for each level as well to get to grips with them for online play. But i think i am going to find it difficult to get the most out of some games. Once i finished it i seldom feel the need to explore everything about it, and rarely do i abandon games, maybe this thread isn't for me!

A few games like Bloodborne or Breath of the wild come along and you do feel the need to explore, but i guess that is why they are special.

Anyway, Still rotating Botw and Yakuza 0 so i'm good for a while i think with buying a new game.

These Switch announcements are going to make life tricky.

Might cancel my Bayonetta preorder - I've still got them on WiiU after all.
