Hi guys, Long time lurker, great forum. I'm looking to purchase a steering wheel and possibly a racing seat to go with it. Re steering wheel, I'd like one that is good quality. I don't treat myself that often so happy to pay a bit more for a higher quality model. Re racing seat.....well firstly, opinions welcome on whether it's a waste of money in the first place ?! If not what would you recommend ? From a practical point of view, I live in a flat with limited space so something that folds away would be ideal. Any views greatly appreciated. |

Registered 20 years agodon't forget a steering wheel is next to useless without something to mount it on to. Wheel stand pro is pretty good, folds up quite neat, then you can use it sat on the sofa. -

Registered 15 years agoWheel stand pro all the way, especially in a flat. I'm in a flat and it folds up and goes down the side of my sofa. 2 minutes max to set up and start racing including getting comfy 😀 -

How about the wheel itself. Is Logitech G29 the top option ? -

From what I can see online the t300 looks to be similar price to Logitech g29 ?
I hadn't even heard of the T-GT. Have you got it or tried it ? Huge price. Is it a much better product than t-300 and g-29 ?
Do you know if there are any new products due to come out which are a step forward from t-gt ? Would be disappointed to spend big money on it only to find something better comes out shortly after ! -

Registered 6 years agoYou'll struggle to find anyone with a T-GT, it's only been out a week or so. Its the first new wheel in a while and there's nothing else planned that I know of. No idea if it's worth the extra cash, but if I had to guess I'd say it probably isn't. It looks sexy though.

Thrustmaster T300 -
If you consider the T300 (which you should), get the Ferrari Alcantara edition. Comes with the improved pedals, and the finish of the wheel is sublime - the material does make a difference of it feeling a lot less like a toy, and more like the real deal (incidentally, the wheel is manufactured at the same factory where the original, from the 599XX EVO, is made).
I own one for a few months now, no regrets. -

Registered 4 years agoNote the point re Ferrari edition, I think the look and feel of the wheel would definitely make a difference to my enjoyment so I'll keep that in mind.
I've also spotted at T500 model. Any views on comparisons with the T300 and the T-GT ? A good mid option ?
I'm willing to spend the money on the T-GT but only if it's a clear winner compared to the others. I'm concerned by some comments I've read elsewhere that it disappoints in some respects. But then again online can often be a negative/critical space so its hard to judge. -

Registered 8 years agoYou might want to hold out for the upcoming T-1000.
It's an advanced prototype made of a mimetic polyalloy.
It's looking pretty sweet. -
Let's put it this way, paying 300-400 Euros and experiencing a few niggles is less infuriating than paying almost twice that.
For me, the T-GT is simply too expensive, unless you're planning to properly invest in a pro-level setup (fixed racing seat, multi-screen, all that shebang) and put some serious number of hours into it.
I'm sure the T-GT is great but man, that price can get you a (shitty) car IRL.
If you're looking for opinions, check out the likes of inside sim racing etc. on YT, they helped me make my decision between the G29 and the T300 (every wheel has pro's and con's, you just have to decide which con's you can live with better). -

@Decks you also have the T300, don't you? How do you find the throttle pedal? Wish there was an option to insert a rubber mod like they do for the brake, as I find it a bit too sensitive for my liking, so maintaining drifts isn't always that easy for me. The only real criticism of it that I can come up with. -
I use a Playseat Challenge because of space issues, it folds easily with everything still attached and is surprisingly sturdy in use. The seat's quite narrow and I'm by no means wide, so check up on that before going down that route. -

Registered 6 years ago@SYS64738 I bought the T3PA pedals, not sure if that's the ones you've got. But yeah the throttle could do with being a bit stiffer. -

@Decks Yeah, the T3PA set came with the edition I got. Read about a few DIY solutions with cardboard or a soft spongy ball to put behind the pedal, might try that some day if it annoys me enough. Or just get a more sensitive right foot. -

I'd second this as another option, I got one recently and it is great - folds away nicely and doubles as a regular gaming chair if you slide the wheel off (very easy).

I'm not familiar with the PS4 wheels other than the T-GT being the new one, but I would recommend looking up the Inside Sim Racing YT review of it, they'll go into the details and let you know whether it is worth the additional cash or not. -

Registered 4 years agoAppreciate all the feedback so far. Very tough decision, I honestly found the process of choosing my last car easier than this wheel !
I was willing to stretch to T-GT or Fanatec but the praise for either of these wheels doesn't seem high enough to justify the substantially higher spend.
On balance a version of T300 sounds the best bet.
I think what I'd like from a set would be 1) great force feedback 2) pedals that feel well built and realistic to use 3) wheel not so small it looks toy like 4) material and general build quality of wheel to be high
However, it seems that those 4 categories are tough to get from one racing set ? Do any of them offer all of that out the box ? A lot of opinion seems to focus on the pedals in various out the box sets being a let down. -
@brokenkey I think getting the wheel and wearing a cap for trackir has already lost me enough respect with my wife, wearing gloves would probably make her call for help!
But I don't really get sweaty hands and the Alcantara is very grippy (presume that is the point) so no need personally. Gloves wouldn't make me go faster anyways

Scotbear .. get the T300 Alcantara as that comes with the 3 pedal set which is improved over the original one. In My view it ticks all those boxes but you can always return it if you don't get on with it. -

I'm thinking I'll get the playseat challenge to go with it (needs to be foldable as i live in a flat with limited space)
I've seen the pro stand mentioned but I don't have a suitable surface to fit it onto.
Does anyone with experience of playseat challenge recommend it and confirm the Alcantara would fit securely to it. -

What do you mean by fit it onto - it's free standing and stands happily on both carpet or smooth floors. You just need to provide the seating (ie, a seat that won't roll backwards when you push on the pedals)

Advantages/disadvantages of playseat compared to pro stand ? -
Playseat is going to be a closer match to what you'd have a in real car, you just need to have the room for it, and you can't put it away. Which might be fine now, but if you expect to move in with someone at any point in the future, prepare to be asked to take it to the tip.
