    #1 - 01/01 - South Park: The Fractured But Whole (PS4)
#2 - 08/01 - My Name is Mayo (PS Vita) Platinum
#3 - 21/01 - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
    #4 - 21/01 - Broken Age (PS4)

Meh was alright, don't really know why I always buy this type of game in a sale but find them a slight chore to play. Anyway it's off the backlog so a very strong start to the year.

Just one so far, but at least it was a long one!

    1) Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Switch)

    1) Call of Duty - WW2 [campaign](PS4) 5/10

Petri dish of a single player experience, filled with a forgettable cast, early 2000s FPS corridor gameplay and a game-breaking bug that deletes progress and only let's you play on Easy thereafter. Fantastic audio, including voiceovers, can not elevate it beyond a solid mediocre.

I have actually hit 12 games finished this year already. Been going through my steam list and playing all the games that take less than 2 hours to beat. Finished stuff like samarost 2 and the yawhg that have been on my list for years. Really enjoying playing games that I can finish in one sitting.

I am way behind schedule this year compared to last with only one finished. Preparation for the final boss of SMT: Strange Journey is taking a bit longer than I expected (wiped me out completely several times so a new approach was needed). Also started SMT 1 on a handme down iphone 4 so I can finally play the official English translation.

Elsewhere still working away at Last Remnant, Utawareromono: Mask of Deception, Fallout:New Vegas is paused and restarted playing Yakuza 0 (chapter 6, nearly finished business 'mini'game). Also considering a quick handheld run of Deus Ex Human Revolution on my Linx Vision so I can playthe PSPlus sequel and decide if it is worth getting the DLC on the current sale...

Edit - @fatsternkiwi that reminds me, I have Samorost 3 to do as I enjoyed the prequels.

I've tried to go scientific this year - put my backlog into a spreadsheet - used howlongtobeat.com to put in how long each game takes to beat and also put in Metacritic scores for good measure.

Used this to create an order of games to play which alternates between short games (less than 10 hours) and games that are longer (as opposed to playing all the small games in a row).

Working really well this year so far...extreme way of doing it (although spreadsheet only took 30 mins to set up), but something had to be done about 100 game backlog. Also nice to know exactly what I'm playing when I turn on the PS4...instead of getting paralysed due to too much choice and playing PES instead!

Let's see how long I can last!

I added most of my backlog to HowLongToBeat a couple of years ago. It came to well over 500 hours, not even on full completionist mode.

    I haven't logged in since

My HLTB has around half of my backlog in it and for standard completion playthroughs it will take 175 days of continuous play.

I suspect that will not be happening.

    @Zomoniac @hedben2013

Ouch! I haven't logged into HLTB, but used their figures for my spreadsheet - just totted my backlog up now and comes to 1832 hours! Or 76 straight days to clear...

...but it is what it is - I stockpiled the games and I'm going to make inroads. Just knowing the above makes a difference - I'm not buying any more games unless they are stone cold classics or have come down to £15 or less. And I find knowing how long each game takes to complete really helps with prioritisation.

Back to Rime (6 hours playthrough apparently)!

Memory is a funny thing... just logged into HLTB again. "A couple of years ago" was February 2014, before I even got an XBone. So the 21 days and 20 hours I remembered was just the x360 backlog, without 4 extra years worth of purchases and GWG on both XBoxes.

Short of breaking both legs and spending months in traction with only a console for company, I could complete 52 this year and still barely scratch the surface

Having to much free time and not having any other major hobbies than playing games, I'm thinking I might have to aim a bit higher than "only" 52 games in 52 weeks :)

Not going for 100% completion, just reaching any "non-bad" ending is usually enough for me to consider myself done with a game, even if I might play though some games multiple times to reach a true ending.

    So far, this year:

    Jan 5: Omega Quintet (PC)
    Jan 5: Sonicomi (PC)
    Jan 10: Blue Reflecton (PS4)
Jan 15: Legend of Heroes: Trails in the sky the 3rd (PC)
Jan 21: Legend of Heroes: Trails of cold steel (PC)

Sonicomi is a bit of a special case though, the game is pretty short and has something like 16 endings (or more?), but still, I feel like I've unlocked enough of them to consider myself done with it even if I might return to unlock a few more some time in the future.

How do people count replaying games btw? As an example, while I consider myself pretty done with Trails of Cold Steel right now I might still return to it after a short break and do a NG+ of it so that I can watch all bonding events and while a second playthrough probably wont be 100 hours like the first one was, it'll probably still be a pretty major time-investment. Same thing with Tokyo Xanadu that I finished at the end of last year, will probably be doing a ng+ of that one soon to.

Edit: Last Trails in the sky game is called "the third", not "final chapter"...

    #1 What Remains of Edith Finch (PS4 Pro) - 8/10 - beat on 1/1/18
#2 Horizon Zero Dawn The Frozen Wilds (PS4 Pro) - 8/10 - beat on 11/1/18
    #3 Firewatch (PS4 Pro) - 7/10 - beat on 16/1/18
    #4 Pyre (PS4 Pro) - 7/10 - beat on 20/1/18
    #5 RiME (PS4 Pro) - 9/10 - beat on 22/1/18

RiME is a beautifully made adventure, very much inspired by Ico and, I would say, The Last Guardian. Itís a beautiful game and has a tremendous soundtrack. But the ending just floored me and elevates the game to something memorable. Well worth the 6 hour playthrough.

#1 The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. 9/10 beat on 11/1
    #2 Journey. 10/10 beat on 11/1
    #3 Wolfenstein 2. 9/10 beat on 23/1
    #4 TorqueL. 5/10 beat on 24/1

TorqueL wasn't what I was expecting at all - thought it would be a bit like Boxboy but actually it's closer to something like QWOP or Mount Your Friends. It has some good ideas, particularly the way the music is controlled by your rotation (though not sure how much of that I could stomach in a longer game) but as the chambers start to ramp up in complexity it quickly just becomes an exercise in frustration; demanding increasingly precise movements from intentionally imprecise controls. I finished one route out of about 7 and felt that was enough.

    1) Inside. 6th Jan. 9/10.
    2) Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. 26th Jan. 9/10

Really loved it, the ship combat is worthy of all the praise it received, but even if it hadn't been there I'd still have loved the rest. The only reason it doesn't get a perfect 10 is the pacing- the game doesn't seem to know if it's aimed at people who rush through the main plot and then mop everything up afterwards, or those (like myself) who totally forget about the story until all the side areas are yellow (meaning 100% completed). I didn't get to use the rope dart much because it's unlocked in the penultimate sequence and I had almost nothing left to do- but the one thing I did have left (a Templar hunt with a Scottish pirate assassin) would have been better done earlier, because her appearance in the final sequence was baffling without knowing who she was.

But minor continuity gripes aside, it's probably tied with Brotherhood for best-in-the-series

    #4: Nioh: 8
    #5: Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus: 6

All bar the last hour or of W2:TNC was played during 2017. Came back to finish it off this afternoon. Not a huge fan. Not a patch on New Order.

First game of 2018 beaten! \o/

    01. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (DS)

If I follow the system I was using last year, i'm currently on 5 games played, 1 completed. 2 of those are endless and 2 are carried over from last year. I'm only a handful of levels away from completing Overcooked! and I can finally dedicate some time to completing Golf Story as well.
