Or we can have a £50 shell offering exciting retail opportunities where we can take pride and satisfaction in filling in the content gaps. Or, something more fair, clear, less exploitative and less manipulative. |

That's a bit reductive, no? There's a massive gap between Steam shovelware and $500m AAA blockbusters. Plenty of Japanese studios have proven these last few years that it's feasible to be successful without using predatory monetisation schemes, after being forced to learn to live within their means after their struggles last gen.
People wouldn't buy cheaply made games either.
The financials of these huge AAA publishers also show insane profit margins, so let's please stop pushing the narrative that they are risking their business and livelihood through the act of making games. Battlefront cost a lot, and it also rakes in way more. It's been recently announced that Activision and 2K are raking in literally billions via microtransactions, and lets not mention the tax avoidance shenanigans going on.
But won't someone please think of the giant record profit-making corporations because games are too expensive to make, despite huge growth in the AAA industry and record profit numbers.
No, let's stop kidding ourselves. It's because the industry is seeing such growth that the shareholders are pushing for more. Which is fine, it's what businesses are for. But we need to stop being so naive and swallowing each and every justification that it is anything but about making as much money as possible.

Sure thing. You go tell that to the Visceral employees.

edit: and yes, of course it's about making money. And that's part and parcel of why they won't just be made more cheaply - there's more money to be had in an expensively proiduced, polished AAA product than there is a mid-tier release, regardless of the cost difference in development (generally). Less people will buy the latter (though there are freak titles that'll buck the trend), whereas the former will make billions more often. And that's what the big publishers want.
UBI are the only one that tends to do more experimental mid-tier stuff, but they make their money from their mega-franchises.

It is for companies like Nintendo. They somehow manage it, so do many other companies.

Of course! It's so simple!
