    Recommended/10

If only i had no job and more time :-(

This bit got me interested (yes i actually read some of the text):

Once again it's the fantasy draft that takes the honours for Football Manager's most compelling mode. Maximum budgets have been raised to a £500 million, and full league functionality has been added for up to 20 teams. It's ironic that fantasy draft began as a way to enjoy the game without having to devote an entire planetary epoch to enjoy it, and has proved so enjoyable that SI are now expanding it into a more long-form experience. It's still not perfect - the drafting process itself still feels like it takes too long, particularly with 20 managers. And although the stripped-back game style helps the pace between matches, if your team isn't working it's very difficult to discern why in the absence of backroom staff advice. Why an attacking trio consisting of Robert Lewandowski, Henrik Mkhitaryan and James Rodriguez wasn't able to break down the defensive pairing of Harry Maguire and Kieran Trippier in 180 minutes of football is a question that will haunt me forever. Nonetheless, I'm as engaged with my £500 million Primadonna FC squad as I am with dragging York City up to the prem.

    @superbob85

The phone version (mobile) or the tablet version (touch)?

The phone version is very much like old school Championship Manager 94/95 etc, no 3D match engine, just text commentary. i think its great but havent played it since 2014 i dont think. It was good then.

The tablet version is a cut down version of the "full" game, and its got the 3d match engine. Last i looked it didnt have useless stuff like media interaction in it. For me, this was the ideal version of the game. Note you can also play the "touch" version on PC and i believe the games saves are compatible with each other but check on that first.

I'd love this on the switch. I might pick up the touch version on my galaxy tab 3 though :)

    A question for FM players.

My son (12) plays FIFA on PS4 and is increasing more and more doing career modes, transfers etc etc but simulating matches rather than actually playing them !!!!

For that reason I'm think of getting him FM 2018.

My question is (having never played it). Screenshots and descriptions seems to show a shitload of screens and options. Are there options to dumb down options in the game for beginners and then increase those as you go along.

    Cheers

Does he like slow paced stuff? If he's into football and he's into management, he'll love it. But remember, this is as slow paced as you can get with a game.

I'd start him off with the mobile version if you have a phone or tablet you can lend him.

I find the full fat game too overwhelming and slow thesedays.

With the mobile version you can still get through a season in a reasonable amount of time.

With the full fat version it almost takes an hour to play a single game now

The touch version is pretty damn good as a slimmed down mode as well if he might need a stepping stone to the full versions. I imagine most people who buy the main series have been into it for at least a decade to the depth doesn’t change a massive amount year to year

Thanks for replies. Didn't even occur to me to check if there was a mobile version. Will do that first and see how it goes.

    Cheers .....

Getting mixed/ poor reviews on Steam, but that's the case every year? Not bothering this year, didn't last year either, the social engineering and personnel management stuff that's crept in the game adds nothing apart from annoyance imo.

So, I've downloaded the demo of Football Manager Touch 2018 on PC. I was hoping to start a hot-seat 2-player game with my GF, but I can't find a way of adding a second manager. On the FM menu, the Add New Manager option is greyed out. Am I missing something, or is it just not enabled in the Demo?

I played a handful of hours on Switch and bounced off it... I'm trying to come back to it, but I keep finding myself on various screens where I can't make progress. Some links to different pages (eg players, clubs, general overview) work but others don't, and the options and continue buttons don't work in that respect. It happened when I first played it last week and it's happened again now.

Having started a new career, I spent an hour setting up scouting on various players, then it wasn't possible to move on to another day nor save. That is pretty frustrating and a waste of an evening.

Had a few hours on the switch version I bought today. Initially the controls were a bit jarring. Decades of playing using mouse and keyboard mean it takes a bit getting used to.

Anyhoo I really like it. The controls are well mapped out and seem really intuitive now. Had a decent start to the season as well (Blackburn).
