Simple question: which movies do you think are superior to the thing (usually books, but other media are acceptable) that they have been adapted from? I'll throw two out there, and let people argue over the rest... Lord of the Rings American Psycho |
Movies that are better than the things they are based on

There aren't many as books almosst always evoke more feelings.
Last of the mohicans book is supposed to be dated trash compared to the film. -
I agree with LOTR, I found the book fucking boring, but Peter Jackson's movies were surprisingly enjoyable. -
Werent there like pages of describing foliage? Pages and pages of describing trees and bushes. -

Registered 18 years agoOK, so it's tv, but Game of Thrones. Only read the first few books, but the show strips out the vast amount of dull inconsequential crap. -

Registered 15 years agoHmmm, LOTR no.
American Psycho I'm sure yes. I haven't read the book but I have read another by the author and it was a complete mess.
I'll throw Blade Runner in. -
@mecha-DR nope. There were some annoying elvish poetry though and the books a bit twee until Moria. As much as I enjoyed the films, the book was better though.
Any film about Moby Dick has to be better than that piece of crap book. That DID have whole chapters on the colour white, knots and the (incorrect) classification of whales. It took over half the book before they even got in a boat. I fell asleep lots of times reading it. -
@dominalien wasn't that "do androids dream of electric sheep?". I only managed a couple of chapters of that book before I gave up. -

The woodsman film starring Kevin Bacon. Far better than the EG member it's based on. -
Apocalypse Now. The Conrad (I think) book was pretty forgettable.
Films based on Steven King short stories, like erm... That one in prison... Oh yes Shawshank. Also the Green Mile.

Registered 13 years agoApocalypse Now isn't exactly a direct adaptation of Heart of Darkness (same with Bladerunner for that matter).
The Short-Timers by Gustav Hasford is a bloody awful book that became Full Metal Jacket. -

Well I can remember reading loads about foliage even if it wasnt page after page, and I read somewhere LOTR, the father all fantasy, started as an ode to the bloody english countryside.

@mecha-DR I've read it about a dozen times at least and i know the "ode to the countryside /Sauron is Hitler" stuff, but it's not full of pages and pages of foliage. Give it a read, but you need to get past Rivendell before it gets good.
Wheel of time series I thought had lots of foliage, but it was decades ago that I read it so could be talking rubbish. -

Registered 15 years agoThe only part of LOTR the book I don't particularly enjoy is the 2nd half of TTT where Frodo and Sam journey to Mordor. It comes after the fantastic pursuit of Merry and Pippin by the rest of the crew and is a complete snooze-fest by comparison. The two parts of TTT should really have been mashed together for a much more enjoyable whole.
The twee beginning of the thing is actually my favourite part. Makes for very relaxing weekend reading.
Edit: oh, actually, I should try reading one chapter from pt 1 of TTT and one from pt 2 the next time I'm doing this. Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm starting to look forward to it..gif)

I started reading Wheel of Time after a short story in a Legends anthology I liked very much. Each book is about 3x too long and it's all rather terrible, really. Took me a couple of books to realise that, though. So much wasted time. /o\

Registered 16 years agoJaws - the book is a bit of a mess, with way too many plot-threads all over the show. The film is taut and effective.
The Exorcist - the book's not bad, but the final act is rushed and it's nothing like as scary as the film.
The Godfather - the book's a pulpy mess, with serious pacing issues. The film solves that by cutting a lot of material off for the sequel. -

Registered 18 years agoLOTR - Books are way better than the films, and I say that as someone who really enjoyed the films.
In almost every case I'd say the original book is superior - the only cases where I'd say the film came close was The Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me (they kept the whole blueberry pie sequence in!) and (Connery's accent aside), The Hunt For Red October. -
I don't know if I'd say better, but I enjoyed the LOTR find more than the books.
I also enjoy the series of Game of Thrones more than the books. -

Registered 9 years agoI enjoyed the main story of LotR. But all too often it felt like reading a dull history textbook, filled with lore that was kind of interesting in itself but didn't really feel relevant to the plot, and which slowed said plot to an absolute crawl.
The pacing was all off for me, basically, and the films cut out most of the dead weight. Therefore, I think they are better. The opposite is the case with The Hobbit.
And here's another: A Clockwork Orange. -
Pioneers of genres are not always that good. Some are. Dracula, while not exactly the first horror book, is still awesome. -

Oh, that explains what you've been writing about LOTR.

Clockwork Orange the movie is absolutely awful, the book quite not nearly as bad as that.
And LOTR the film added huge amounts of fluff, mostly to shoehorn the Aerosmith girl in, but still. -

Registered 9 years agoWell, I didn't want this thread to be entirely about LotR.
Though it's probably the one that people will argue over the most, so eh, I guess I should have expected it. -
