The Fly (1986) vs. The Fly (1958) - not sure about the novella it was originally based on though...

Conrad's short story of The Duel is good enough, but I agree that Scott really fleshed it out and made the pathology of the characters more interesting (and their deluded notions of honour).

It does help that it's absolutely gorgeous to look at and has a much better ending than the short story (novella? And one of the most beautiful final shots of any film full stop).

I love The Duellists. I don't understand why it got a bit of a pasting from critics at the time.

Agree on Blade Runner. I'm a Dick fan (fnar) and while Do Electric Sheep... had some interesting ideas I thought it was fairly unremarkable.

I'm, to this day, in two minds about Trainspotting. I read the book after I had seen the film (on release) and usually that implies liking the former a lot more but it didn't, nor can I say I liked it less.

You mean you don't have Playboy from June '57 in your collection? What's wrong with you?

Good point. Cronenberg's Fly is as much a version of Scanners with a different plot as it is an adaptation of the 50s version, but I'd say it's better than either film.

Ha - I didn't realise the original story was from Playboy! you learn something new every day....

Going to have to re watch scanners and the fly now to see what similarities I can see (haven't seen either for a few years)

It's a funny thing: magazines and journals used to host more serialised novels and stories, I think. At least to my knowledge. A lot of classic Soviet literature was published that way, but that was probs because of some politicking.

A lot of French literature, too. Actually I think a whole lot of places did it, at least up until the beginning of the 20th century.

There's also the evil bastard twin to this thread; movie novelisations that are better than the movie they're based on. While most novelisations are cheap, trashy cash-ins, you get the odd one that isn't. With a decent author with proper access to scripts and staff, you occasionally get a novelisation which is better than the film.
Ha ha - guilty confession, but as a teenager I quite enjoyed the book of Grease.

None of the songs in there, of course.
