Prey I've played lots of amazing games this year, many of which others have referenced here, but Prey still stands out firmly as my favorite on the whole. These days, I'm an eclectic gamer; I tend to have several (10-20) games on the go at once and, by and large, I take quite a while to complete any one title (sometimes over the course of months). Although not the only outstanding game I played this year, Prey was the only one which stopped me playing any other title until it was completed - I completely rinsed it within a week, which is unheard of for me in recent years (maybe decades?). Just phenomenal, really; nothing else has came remotely close to so strongly evoking my memories of playing System Shock 2 as a teenager. I absolutely loved it. The aesthetics, style, UI, narrative, world design, it was just all totally boss. |

Thought BotW had it sewn up but after getting back into Nioh, I'd give it to that. I'm 200 hrs in, in NG+++, and the game has suddenly opened up. Can see myself putting another 100 hrs in. -
@GarlVinland how does it open up? -

Oddly enough, my Game of the Year is probably going to be Skyrim as I'd forgotten how much I loved it.
Games from this actual year though are:
Botw
Odyssey
Mario kart -

Even 120 hours i was quite happy scaling cliffs and just exploring. I just really enjoyed it. I like that there isn't really any urgency in the game and you are free just to do as you wish. I think it is pretty much as close as a game to what Miyamoto originally envisioned. I was really drawn in by its childhood view of adventuring and it was a game that keeps rewarding your curiosity. -

It's an absolutely brilliant game, some of the criticsm people have for it seems ridiculous to me but there you go. -
Not exactly GOTY material, but as I haven't played anything else from 2017, I'll have to call Mass Effect Andromeda.
well it's definitely more deserving of the title than Witcher 3 was

In terms of build variety. Up to NG++, there are only a few that are viable, so unlike Souls I couldn't see myself rerolling over and over. However once you get to NG+++, which is very tedious but worth it IMO, you start getting ethereal items. Everything not already part of a set gets assigned a random ethereal-exclusive set bonus, and there are some really fun ones.
@GarlVinland how does it open up?
There's one that makes magic viable, one geared towards boosting bare-handed attack, and my favourite, one that makes drinking infinite sake and throwing rocks viable.
It extends the grind massively, if that's your thing, but they drop frequently enough to be rewarding. It's given the game a new lease of life for me. -

Don't get em wrong, I love my Fallouts, I love my Gears Of War, I love dark disturbing horrible post-apocalyptic games. But when I pick up those joycons and start hunting for more moons. Absolute happiness. Woo! Ha! WAAAAHHHHOOOOOOOOOO!!!! -

Registered 12 years agoIt’s been a good year for gaming imo, except for driving games. Tried gt sport, forza 7, didn’t try project cars 2 but I read the controls still don’t work right on pads. Still had some fun with horizon 3 though. -

Registered 16 years agoStar Trek Bridge Crew is probably the thing that wowed me the most. It might not have the longest lifespan in the world because you'll have learned all the skills you need for all the positions within a couple of hours, but it really feels like Star Trek in a way I'll never experience in real life. Every role feels different and the way you interact as a real crew always feels fantastic.
I'm lucky enough to have never had a bad group yet, because everyone is there to pretend to be a Starfleet officer. Everyone knows their job and everyone pitches in to do it well. Sometimes it's hilariously silly fun, sometimes it's super serious, but it's always Star Trek. -
