I thought Super Mario Odyssey was the best thing I played this year by quite some distance, and I'm not normally huge on Mario games, but the year in general has been pretty great. Zelda was a fitting end for the Wii U, even if I did lose interest about 15 hours in, GT Sport is the best the series has been in years, F1 2017 is all an F1 game needs to be (or at least it would be if some of the final issues were ironed out...), Assassin's Creed Origins is a fantastic return to form.

Did find Horizon Zero Dawn really, really dull though. Just didn't grab me at all.

Erase all of the above, having just played Life Is Strange Before the Storm maybe that's either the best or second best to Mario. Damn.

After 10 hours of AC Origins I think it's easily in my top 5. I may end up feeling differently once I hit 30 or 40 hours but so far I'm absolutely loving it.

I played a similar amount of Horizon Zero Dawn earlier in the year and thought it was good but didn't quite get into the zone with it like I have with Origins. Fully intend on going back to it this year and hopefully I'll get into it a bit more but currently think Origins is better.

My top 5 in no particular order is probably

    AC Origins
    GT Sport
    Breath of the Wild
    Mario Odyssey
    Nioh

My top games this year would be:

    Horizon ZD
    Wipeout Omega
    Uncharted Lost Legacy
    Resident Evil 7

Played Horizon for countless hours but enjoyed Uncharted the most.

I could have easily included both of these too, 2017 was an amazing year so many great games.

After much deliberation my final top 5 comes out like so...

    1. Hellblade
    = Horizon Zero Dawn
    3. What Remains of Edith Finch
    4. Prey
    5. Nier: Automata

I mostly play FPS and racing games, so it's an odd list for me. But HZD and Prey I got completely sucked into, Hellblade and Nier were flawed but both did extremely interesting things, and Edith Finch was very affecting.

Plus I think it speaks to the fact that we had a much weaker 2017 than 2016 for FPS (Destiny 2 being shit and all), and we had lots of very good racers but none astonishing enough to hit my top 5 (I haven't played GT Sport though).

@ModoX 2016 was an all-timer for FPS. :) It won't be beat at least until Titanfall 3 comes out, unless EA shits all over it!

Very late change of mind but I managed to play through Lost Legacy myself a few nights ago and it was very much the best thing I played all year. I honestly think they could make them forever and I'd lap them up every single time. Their world building is absolutely second to none.

I really really liked Lost Legacy, but is it really doing more than any one of a dozen other games did this year? It's just UC4 but without the filler and with better characters. I don't mean to diss it, but I don't think it's strong enough for GOTY.

I loved UC4, so a streamlined version of that is absolutely fine by me. I've got less time for gaming than I've ever had so pick my games carefully to get the most out of them, and this one ticked all of the boxes for me.
