I'm in the market for a new TV, 4K 10BIT HDR HDMI 2.0 - Size around 40 inches. I* sit around 2 feet away from my current TV.

    Price around £600

I've been told that unless I spend a grand or more I'm wasting my time. UHD is no good at this screen size, and HDR is poor with TV's that don't have enough nits, and they start at £1000+

I have a 4k capable PC and PS4 pro, so it's time I let them shine.

Currys have a great range, but little information on HDR and HDMI 2.0 capabilities.

So can anyone suggest a great TV ^ with these specs and my within my budget please?

40” 4K is wasting your time

A quick look at Which suggests Samsung, LG and Panasonic are the brands at that spec and price. Quite a few that seem to have what you want. None are "best buys", but they are 60 to 70% in the reviews.

I paid £650 for a 55" Sony from John Lewis a little while ago with the obligatory 5 year warranty chucked in and good aftercare.

The Samsung UE40MU6400U is supposed to be good. What hifi recommended it last year.

From 2 feet away I can just about see the pixels on my 37inch set.

You should get a DAZBO for viewing from 2 feet away. It’s not fucking VR.

@Mr_Sleep I've read that the MU range below 55" has a poorer quality panel half the refresh rate and a much lower nits rating. This is the case with the MU8000 range though so it will probably apply to the lesser MU6400.

Try avforums as a starter, plenty of advice/reviews on there.

So no easy answer then :)

Thanks for the advice everyone. Actually I've just measured the distance, it's actually 3 feet when playing a game, and 6 feet when watching a movie.

My current monitor is a 34" LG ultrawide and I don't fancy spending nigh on a grand for a UHD ultrawide... though I might have too to get a respectable TV.

I've been keeping an eye on this, and the reviews are pretty damned good too.

@reggy72 I am sure that is true but it is quite an affordable TV in comparison to many others out there and would no doubt be a step up regardless.

I have been looking for a new telly myself, any recommendations along the lines of the Samsung mentioned?

Spending half an hour tuning your fucking Amiga in. What a fucking hassle.

So you actually want a monitor? Why the fuck were you asking about TVs then?

@Mr_Sleep Not really, I was looking for a new set and after a few reviews and a budget of £1300 I went for the Samsung MU8000 which I bagged for £1100, I'm sure they are sub 1K now, as for the set in comparison to the Sony W8 it replaced it is a night and day difference, it is not as good as the Samsung Q series, but sits at the top of the mid range and it has a very good response time as a gaming set with pretty good blacks, 10 bit HDR or 1000 nits although it nit count is nearer to 800. Amazing picture for the money, sub HD looks ok I guess but 1080p looks fantastic due to a great upscaler.

    Here is a review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1S2HnvIrNA&t=994s

I'm sure there are equivalent LG and Sony TV's that are a match, but I fancied a Sammy for a change.

Because he actually wants a computer monitor. He's sitting at a PC.

Ok, so I'm looking for a new TV (not a monitor) as an upgrade for my 8 year old Sony 40" LED.

Looking at a 55" around the £500 - £750 range. The Samsung UE55NU7400 looks a decent option at around £700, although the stand looks a bit rubbish. I've always gone Sony before, but there isn't anything in this price bracket. Seems like Samsung or LG are the best options.

    If it's relevant I think I sit around 3m away from the TV (I haven't measured...) :)

So I saw the TV, which looks good - but the stand is indeed ugly. Seems you can get universal stands so not really a major issue.

I'm now wondering if it is worth paying the premium for OLED. Seems like I'd be paying an extra £500 odd for it, which is a lot. Any TV experts on here able to advise on whether it is worth paying for?

Also, seems like LG and Samsung are the best options, anyone have any experience or preference of brands (I've always bought Sony before)?

Its going to be our main TV in the living room, so will be used for TV, streaming, movies, gaming.

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks - Not the answer I was hoping for (but the one I was expecting!). Looking at it in a bit more detail, it's more like £700 - £800 more (£1,400 for a 2017 LG OLED is the best price I can find), which is double the price I was looking at and I'm just not sure I can stretch to that unfortunately.

So I suppose I either compromise, or wait for a price drop on OLED :(

OLED? Price drop? Well there's always Black Friday and then January sales, probably starting around Dec 24th or Boxing Day.

So, still holding out for a Black Friday deal before deciding what to do, but wondering if anyone has any experience of QLED tvs? I know the general consensus seems to be that OLED is better, but QLED seems a bit more affordable so is a potential compromise.
