After waiting over a day between ordering and having my account activated I can give some initial impressions on this - I didn't go for the Shadow Box - I thought it best to try this out on my existing hardware and if all works well then maybe go for the box with a full year sub (I've only gone for a month to minimise my risk). So far I've tried it on my Macbook Air and GPD Win. First issue - the Windows installation process was in French. I managed to get by with the Google Translate app on my phone but some my find this a bit of a ballache than others. Managed to get through it though and finally found the setting to change most of it to English. Installed Steam, Origin and Battle.net and decided to jump in with one of my most demanding games - Witcher 3 - on the GPD Win. I was quite impressed with how well it ran. Bearing in mind that the GDP Win is an extremely underpowered handheld PC (a purchase which I've regretted until now). I set all graphic settings to max but set the resolution to 720p which is the native resolution of the GDPWin. Everything seemed to run smoothly apart from the occasional noticeable input lag. In any case it was 100% playable and quite astonishing to have a full quality version of The Witcher 3 running on a machine with identical dimensions to a 3DS XL. The built in joypad helped too. I plan to try out a few more titles later today but so far so good. BTW - I'm on a Virgin 100mb connection. This might have helped with the experience so YMMV. |

Registered 20 years agoHow do local USB controllers get mapped to the remote machine? Can you use a steam controller for example?
Intrigued by this as my desktop is ancient (Pentium Core era) and my laptop is not great for gaming. -

I still don't really get it. I'd rather just buy a PS4Pro or whatever if i couldnt afford a good PC. -

I’ve just plugged in an old xbox360 controller and it works fine - I can only assume the steam controller works in a similar way -

Registered 17 years agoDecided to give a multiplayer title a go - Heroes of the Storm.
I didn't experience any lag whatsoever throughout the whole 30 minute match. It felt exactly the same as if I were playing on my local machine. This was with settings on max at 720p.
I've tried a bunch of games now - Civ 6, WoW, Lego Jurassic World - all work fine.
For the ultimate test I gave One Finger Death Punch (best beat-em up ever) a go as split second timing is absolutely crucial in this game. It worked! -

Registered 4 years ago@swede - USB drivers are installed along with the client. I'm guessing any USB device you connect to your local PC is registered on the remote machine.
I'll describe my own experience once I get my account activated. I've heard it can take up to five days.. -

The Shadow® remote computer may be linked to most standard peripherals (printers, joysticks, etc.).
https://shadow.tech/gben/cgu
However, the User is asked to check with Blade that his or her peripherals are compatible with the Service and/or Terminal and Third-Party Terminals that he or she wishes to use. Blade plans to make further IT developments which are necessary to ensure the Service is compatible with as many peripherals as possible, but cannot guarantee that it is compatible with all existing peripherals. In particular, the performance of some peripherals may be affected if the User's Internet connection, for example, his or her bandwidth, is not enough to ensure use under the best possible conditions.
In this regard, Users are asked to report any anomalies observed to Blade, affecting the running of their peripherals, by sending an e-mail to support@blade-group.com.

Registered 4 years agoDue to limited information on the official website, here are some notes regarding the service that I have collected together from different sources - mainly reddit and the Shadow's own 'Terms of Use.'
I will correct this post as needed.
The activation of your Shadow account normally takes around 5 days. This can currently take longer due to the UK launch still being very recent.
Clients are available for Mac, Windows (32bit and 64bit), Android. No Linux Client currently available.
What are you actually paying for and why does it take 5 days (normally)?
You are given an 'instance,' or cloud PC, which is dedicated and setup for you to access.
Hardware:
8 dedicated threads on an Intel Xeon server processor
Once you shut down the cloud PC, another user may utilise the hardware previously allocated to you. Your storage space is dedicated, and not shared even when your cloud PC is off.
12GB of RAM
256GB of storage space.
GTX 1080/P5000.
There is an automatic shut-down. Timeout unknown.
From Terms of Use:
To ensure optimal allocation of its IT resources, Shadow® uses a remote computer automatic shut down and/or standby mechanism. In this respect, given that the User is warned in advance before Shadow® is shut down or put on standby, Blade shall not be held liable for the resulting loss of data.
Windows 10:
Shadow provides you with a Windows 10 installation; allowing you to play Xbox Anywhere games (and access Windows Store). Most other providers are using Windows Server 2016, which doesn't have this functionality. Universal Windows Platform (UWP) is also supported.
Increasing HDD space:
Blade may offer Users different subscription options or a paying options system so that they can enjoy a greater hard disk capacity.
Customer Service:
Very good in my experience so far. Expect a reply within a few hours. Cancellations are also possible by sending CS a message.
Prohibited uses of the Service:
Mining cryptocurrencies. Hacking. Spamming.
The future:
Additional subscription models.
Blade may offer subscriptions and/or paying options that give access to different configurations, or set up optimised allocation mechanisms for server computing resources depending on use by Users.

Works fine on my MacBook Air although I believe the mouse pointer issue is a common one. Simply restarting the stream usually fixes it. -

Registered 4 years agoI've had a few hours with the service now. My internet connection is the same as OP (Virgin 100mb) and most of my testing so far has been with Tomb Raider 2013. I played it recently for the first time on my local PC, but at medium to low settings to maintain frame-rate.
When starting out I did notice some 'smearing' of the stream during fast moving sections. Increasing the connection speed in the Shadow client resolved this. At no point have I felt like I was not playing this game locally. It all works very well. The client itself is very flexible and has no issues complying with the remote system's resolution - 4:3 1024x768 worked fine for example. Local PC CPU usage by the client is low, and I doubt there would be any issues running it on very old hardware or even in VirtualBox on Linux.
Tomb Raider 2013 however does reveal the weakness of the CPU on offer with this service - Xeon E5-2620v4. Running the game at resolutions as low as 720p - I still experience occasional dips below 60fps. Settings where Ultra, with TressFX for hair off. I also added the registry entry: MultiCoreFlushMode - but still the dips occurred.
I think at the current pricing of this service, you shouldn't be expected to make compromises. -
