As per the thread title, what takes your vote for the best action film ever? Aside from Taken and Salt, of course.

I don't really intend for this to be a list thread, but feel free to nominate more than one if you can't possibly choose. And the definition of "action" is pretty wide, so you can choose (for example) martial arts movies if you like.

As for me, I will probably change my mind on this in a few hours. But I've had a few drinks, so right now... Mad Max: Fury Road. COME AT ME.

(but seriously, what are your ones)

I disagree. It's like what Road Warrior would have been with a massive budget to equal Miller's vision. (and I loved Road Warrior)

Demolition Man. I really love that film. They build that silly joy joy future which is so saccharine even I would think it's a bit much, then stick 2 90s action heroes in there and watch them mess it up. Except that version where they dub the restaurant as "Pizza Hut", which is an abomination. It's Taco Bell. TACO. BELL.

Die Hard? Terminator 2? Aliens? Rambo - First Blood? Could go on and on.

Hard to narrow it down to one to be honest.

    Sharnado 3.

Die Hard would probably be the Empire top action film.

I have a soft spot for the slightly shit but rewatchable ones. Like, I love Hard Rain. I have seen it sooo many times.

If you want to class Aliens as an action film, rather than as sci-fi or horror, then it's Aliens. Nothing else even close.

If you don't, then it's trickier. Terminator would be a good call, I suppose.

Old school Where Eagles Dare for me, surpassing Predator, Clint Eastwood was the original bullet proof hero in this movie, it would be my desert island movie I think.

Nothing quite compares to (Rambo) First Blood. 100% decent action film, and one of Stallone's finest moments. Arnold's Commando is pretty decent, along with Predator.

    I think:

    Hard Boiled

    and

    The Killer

    must be in this list.

Nothing tops Hard Boiled, imo, in terms of spectacle and old-school stunt work ramped up to insane levels.

In terms of construction, I'd say Die Hard. Everything feeds into something else, it's nearly perfectly written, edited and directed.

Not really an action film. So change your vote to Predator.

2016 Parts 1&2 look pretty awesome.

Skip to about 3 minutes in if you want to get straight to the action.

Since the obvious ones have been covered and you did say I could include martal arts:

District 13 (The French one, not the crap Hollywood remake)
    Ong Bak

If I were talking about just the last decade or so, then I actually would choose Fury Road. That or The Raid.

But going back further than that, Die Hard is definitely a solid choice. As is The Killer. And if I could also add martial arts movies, I'd go for Fist of Legend, Drunken Master 2, etc. There are ever so many. :(

When I think of action films I think mainly of set-pieces, and these have the best set-pieces:

    Terminator 2
    The Matrix

But then there are films that are just quality action films:

    Point Break
    Die Hard
    Predator
    Aliens
    Speed
    The Bourne Supremacy
    Casino Royale
    Hard Boiled
    The Raid

I think my favourite film on that list is probably Aliens.
  • Deleted user 1 February 2018 12:28:08
Terminator 2. Nice variety of set pieces.

    Edit: ^^:D
