Not mutually exclusive! Or if it is, then Predator is a scifi film.

Straight from the "A History of Violence" link:

"Now, The French Connection is a very important action movie. Gene Hackman’s Popeye Doyle is the model for any number of desperate, overdriven movie cops in the years that followed. The movie’s harrowing car/subway train chase was maybe the best chase ever filmed for a while, and it helped show what you could do with that sort of scene. And the movie won the Best Picture Oscar; to this day, it’s one of the few action movies ever to get serious Oscar consideration."

@GarlVinland A superhero list'll be interesting. The articles led me to hunt down (well, search Netflix for) the most recent Universal Soldier movies, which I'd dismissed as total crap. Turns out they're both solid B-movies.

Are we to conclude that live action/non CGI films make the best action movies?
    Absolutely yes
After years of seeing interminable, incomprehensible super-spinny epileptic camera CGI-laser-beam Marvel action sequences I found the opening action scene from Captain Philips (where the pirates approach the boat) to have more tension and peril than any I had seen in years. It's not even an action film and the scene is basically a boat approaching another boat fairly slowly. It was gripping.

Do we consider Leon to be an action movie?

    Leon.

I would say calling it an action film does it a bit of a disservice.

    Your memory is false.

Or this bit, which is Russian Terminator remade

Or this bit where he throws his bottles away like that soldier falling over in Batman:

Ok but you need put it into context of when it was made and what other martial arts film were like at the time. Plus watching Bruce Lee fight will never stop being amazing.

Tough one, do films like The Fifth Element, Kill Bill or The Matrix count?

    I default to Commando.

It was actually amazing in 3D as well.

    RoboCop.

The answer works for anything. Best comedy, best action, best drama.

    It's always RoboCop.

Denzel's Equaliser for me. Wasn't expecting much but was action filth.

Honourable mention of San Andreas. I haven't laughed at the absurdity of action scenes crammed together in a good while. Was just missing sharks in the water at the end (why else would he cut his leg and bleed in to the water?) .

The best one in the last few years is probably 'The Raid 2'.

All time, for me it's 'Terminator 2: Judgement Day'.

Either T1 or 2. Probably 2 as a pure action film, although I prefer 1.

Thought Heat might get a mention. Not a fan myself though.

Commando is great. Village People baddie and great one liners 'let off some steam Bennett', 'please do not disturb my friend, he's dead tired'.

I'd say Terminator 2, but since everyone else seems to think so as well, I'll say True Lies just to be different.

No vote for Street Fighter movie?

SF could never be the best because the Mortal Kombat movie would kick its ass. Christopher Lambert as the god of thunder, stroke of genius.

Dredd was indeed great as recent films go, as is Enter the Dragon is for 70's flicks- brokenkey is obviously a deluded noob!

I can't believe all this Terminator 2 love though, the original is a thing of awesomeness and ropey 80's effects. Which *clearly* makes it MORE awesome. :D
  • Deleted user 1 February 2018 16:53:33
T2 is like the vehicular equivalent of a Jackie Chan movie, the scale of some of the stunts is insane. I'm thinking flying a helicopter under an overpass.
  • Deleted user 1 February 2018 17:04:00
T1 is super awesome and may be the second on my list, but T2 knows no match

It's got to be Predator absolutely brilliant film. Honourable mentions to newer films are Dredd and thought Equaliser with Denzel was superb.

T2 is just a series of CGI and stunts loosely linked together, especially the way I watch it these days. I'll always have a lot of love for the way T1 did it with the effects of the day, but then I've always loved the creature features.
