Hi everyone, I have a small YouTube channel dedicated to retro gaming and I thought you might find this video interesting. During the 90s, there was a popular gameshow in Europe, South America and parts of Asia where kids would play videogames on live national TV from the comfort of their own homes, using their corded phones as the controller. All they had to do, was call the hotlines. It's basically streaming before streaming was a thing. You can view the video here: |

Registered 9 years agoIn the UK was this not the game they played via the phone on "Live & Kicking" (Saturday morning TV show)?
I can't remember what show did it, but I do recall Magic Pockets (Bitmap Brothers game) being played over the phone too.

I think there might have been an even older similar idea where they were shooting a blocky UFO by saying "fire" on the phone. Sort of early 80s square graphics. They played against someone in the studio. You can guess which one usually won.
The Danish (I think) presenter at 1:13 is like a hot Violet Berlin. -

Registered 15 years ago@Pierre2k it was “What’s up Doc?” on ITV rather than “Live & Kicking”, although they may have had something similar. -
I remember that too, although in my memory it was hardly only kids who "played" that. In fact, we kids with our real games kinda looked down on adults who played that shit via phone and TV.
There were also actual games, PC and Game Boy I think, maybe more. I think they were thrashed by the gaming press for being awful. -

The BBC definitely had something, though to my mind it was likely started during the Going Live era rather than the later Live and Kicking, but to be honest that whole series from Saturday Swapshop up until live and kicking is kind of a blur these days. But as I recall they had to shout out instructions down the phone, rather than using a tone dial phone to direct it, which made the gameplay even more laggy and frustrating to watch (god knows how annoying it was to play).

This video brought to mind the animated film called Hugo that was released a few years ago now by Martin Scorcese, but I gather that's come from an entirely different source. -

Registered 6 years agoNo it's the same thing mal. Martin Scorcese based his film about an orphan who worked in a magical train station in the 1930's on the phone in troll game that used to be on CITV. -

That was what was on the BBC, saturday mornings back in the day. The kids playing it were a lot more successful than I remember them being on average -

Registered 16 years agoI played Maggot Moments and won 'a selection of children's books'. The next tier prize was a Gameboy, so no wonder the cheating cunt crow stiffed me.
However, the most memorable part of the whole thing was that I got to listen to a whole episode of defenders of the earth over the phone because they make you turn your TV down.
That and I got to speak to prime 90s Philippa forester.
