A thread where we can discuss general winter olympics goings on, including sports where you'd rather not use the existing sport thread.

So we're two days off the opening, but they're already playing curling. At the moment the Swiss are keeping the Chinese honest when it comes to sliding those stones about.

This mens slopestyle is a mark up from four years ago. Not sure if this is live, or being repeated because the men's downhill is postponed, but it claims to be live. Third runs about to start, where hopefully most people will be able to do a good run - since I turned it on in the second round, everyone's binned it to some extent or other.

But there were some crazy tricks pulled in the qualis yesterday. No brits made it through unfortunately, which was a shame because the lad from Halifax put in a good run before he dropped it in the second run.

I've been watching it on catch up. Watched some ski jumping and moguls so far. Too bad about the time difference.

Nice of that Russian athlete who won a medal to go on a rant about how unfairly they've been treated. I just find it aggravating as they could have been punished even more than they were.

I think the whole OAR thing is a nice compromise as I appreciate that obviously many Russian athletes are genuinely innocent of any wrongdoing.

You say obviously, but AIUI knowledge of this dodgy lab went to the top of the sport over there, so anyone under that umbrella is suspicious. I'm surprised how big the Olympic Athletes from Russia team is really.

That said, I've only seen them competing thus far in the curling and the cross country skiiing, where they'd have to take a shitload of drugs to be anywhere near the top, so the Russkies probably couldn't afford the medical costs to get them to the front there.

BBC "Red Button" seems like the best place to watch this so far.

Got a few American channels, but they're filled with adverts!

Not really a fan of the actual events, but I watched the opening ceremony today which was pretty good.

Yeah those drone were pretty good, only slightly spoiled by the commentator saying 'this is all augmented reality you know' suggesting you needed to be wearing some special glasses or looking through your phone to see them. That's not the case, these were real, and pretty damn impressive (although of course, all being done through fancy computers is nothing compared to the choreography of actual people that went in to the London olympics, but they did have actual kids dancing on their own in this one which we didn't do much of).

I like having the Olympics on of an evening. Curling is surprisingly engaging.

Also, so is figure skating. Nothing to do with beauty, obvs...

Every four years I watch the sliding events to see just how batshit mental you have to be to take part in something like that.

My partner always likes watching the skating so I end up watching it too.

So Elise Christie fell over again in the speed skating. And we didn't qualify for mixed curling, or the half-pipe, and we crashed and burned in both mens and women's slopestyle. Predictions of double figure gold hauls look overly optimistic at the moment, although I suppose we have got team curling and one or two other bits and pieces where hopefully we won't be as shit and as accident-prone.

Mal only ever skated once. The resulting tear in the space-time continuum caused the collapse of betamax.

GB medal haul was 5, not double figures. And it can still be done, although it will need to some exceptional performances in all the remaining eligible events.

What's more peculiar is the funding - £28 million was spent on the team, so that works out at over £5.5 million per medal target. I don't know how other countries fund their teams but I doubt they have paid that much.

Watched wonen’s speed skating on commentary free streaming on YiuTube last night. Was quite good. The lack of commentary made it a bit hard to figure out who was doing the best. As did the alcohol. Less of that would have made more sense of the 40 off mijutesxwe watched. And probably twigged that that Sochi 14 banner wasn’t in honor of the previous Winter Olympics.

Was watching the ladies slopestyle last night. I know it was very windy, but they seemed to do a lot less than the men.

Snowboarding has come such a long way, it's only been in the Olympics since 1998. I was telling my kids there was a game called 1080 on the N64 - someone pulled off a 1620. I think they can do more, there's an event called "Big Air" coming up.

Good to see the Muirhead family doing well in the curling.

I enjoyed the Russ- sorry, OAR - curling couple and her loud cries of “SVEEEEP! SVVEEEEEP!”

    Kinda endearing.

Doubles Luge is the most insane sport at these games.

Eve's looking different, think she's put on a bit of beef. She'd still make my Women of Curling calendar.

...just googled such a thing...she's on the front cover, looking "ripped"! She's just lost her cheek bones somehow...

Clearly this is a bit sexist, but I think she's fantastic, she's full of grit and determination, a great speaker, intelligent. A great role model :)

@DaM She definitely doesn't look as bonny as 4 years ago which is a shame but still lovely.

Well done to Slovenia for beating the USA in ice hockey.

I thought luge was pretty damn crazy the first time I saw it. You say there's a doubles version as well?

Hmm, yeah, caught a bit of that on the red button review. Those guys must be very good mates.

In other news, Stigler's (sp?) crash in the slalom looked nasty. Carried on sliding down the hill for ages.

I can see the enthusiasm for the Olympics on here is staggering.

While I was glued to the Eurosport stream when Australian Open was on, I haven't even turned it on during the past 2 weeks. I think it's time for something new.
