So here's the first pic of Joaquin. Erm, yeah.... not really sure what to make of it.

Hmm...A proper clown. Could be pretty scary if he goes fucking nuts.

    It's John Wayne Gacy.

Could really work if they decide to make the character a closeted, rapist serial killer.

It's just a clown rather than the Joker. The point of the Joker is that he has an identity and they've removed it.

I get it's a weird origin story that is an origin to nothing, so they can shape him in the film to a more refined look at the end, but I'm not feeling this style.

I'm assuming that's the point. He wore the clown makeup when he was on the job until something happened to transform him into the Joker forever.

I was intrigued by this until I saw it was directed by Todd Phillips.

He isn't full joker in these pics just turned to crime. Will most likely still end with a dip in some chemicals

Are they going to shoe horn this into their shitty universe or is this a stand alone film?

That's really not any kind of excuse. The Nolanverse Joker didn't get a dip in any chemicals and "just turned to crime".
The behaviour of the character is to be seen, I just don't care for The Joker being The Clown. It misses the point of his identity, and we've seen plenty of nasty clowns on-screen already.

What? Do you not think the maker of such classics as Road trip and the hangover will make a classic joker film?

I'm looking forward to the bit where Arthur wakes up feeling like arse after a heavy night to realise he's tattooed the makeup directly to his face. And he's got an important audition in an hour! Uh oh!

Heath Ledger was just a guy on make up, how is this any different?

He didn't have a red nose and diamond eyes/brows. He also had the scars but that's less important.

Joker isn't just a circus clown gone bad. This is.

But he is a failed comedian in the comic this is adapting.

And Ledgers joker wore the clown mask at the start of TDK which was based on previous versions

While I'm not optimistic about this film in the slightest and see no point in its existence surely pre existing characters backgrounds and origins can be reinterpreted? Or must they always be a slave to a single origin/idea/personality?

I don't know why you all care so much/don't understand my point. It's nothing to do with ideas/backgrounds/chemicals. I don't think this looks like the Joker.

Film might be great. Performance will likely be fantastic regardless of the rest. It's still just a circus clown being naughty and doesn't have any of the Joker's visual identity other than the green hair. If you're making a Joker movie, I'd expect more than that.

I have no problem with tweaks to designs but they need to add something to it (Nolan's Joker), not remove from it/change for the sake of it (Amazing Spider-man).

I think it looks fine. But even if I didn't, there's like two pictures of it. Not really enough to go on either way.

At least it's not Jared Leto.

The point everyone is making is that its an origin story. He may start off looking like a clown and end up looking like the classic joker.

If he started off looking like it, it wouldn't be much of a story arc.

I'm pretty sure Derbs has seen the full cut of the movie.

You're making the point that I said in my first post on it? Isn't that a bit redundant?
"I get it's a weird origin story that is an origin to nothing, so they can shape him in the film to a more refined look at the end, but I'm not feeling this style."

And it's entirely possible to keep him looking like a tweaked Joker before a final look, rather than a clown.

    @mola
Quite a few pictures on the twitter page linked.

It's all nonsense anyway. If it isn't comical whimsy Batman Batdancing then go fuck yourself again, Hollywood. Batman is the worst of the cartoons when played seriously

Am I the only person who liked the few minutes of Leto's Joker that we saw? (Ignoring the stupid tats)

No. Leto's mum thought he looked really cool, too.
