    Bad timing?

Interesting read on The Register about readers replies to 'Are you going to buy a new Mac soon' type question.

Nah, not bad timing it'll take 'em a year to put it all in place.

    Because he hasn't.

He hasn't said the next machine will be quicker, he said future models of the X86 allow for growth.

    /sweet smile.

TBH not really that interested. Apple chose to switch to the only chip supplier capable of churning out sufficient numbers of chips - imho the correct thing to do.

As for whether to buy one now or not - its going to take a while for them to get a stable reliable hardware platform going and the software ported across so you will probably get at least good 2 years of use out of a Mac you bought today. But they will have the 'wait and see' problem - but not a massive one.

He had to, to be honest.

If they'd released the dev code this week to people to work on dual-binary compiled code that would've slipped out quicker than a greased thing in an overlarge hole and Apple would have to come out with a statement. Better to use an official keynote to outline a plan and why they are doing it.

Also, what they've announced is a chipset change. New software coming out will still support the older range of PPC chips otherwise companies are going to reduce their potential market. Just because they are doing this doesn't make the current hardware leading to the swap redundant and doesn't mean people are going to code specifically for the x86 chipset when they don't have to.

I can see people waiting so they can sling Windows on the machines, but these are the minority. The majority will, I believe, continue to purchase machines. I don't think it will hurt the low-end machine sales, but I think it *will* hurt the Powermac range. I also think the laptop ranges will be one of the first to get the new chipset and OS, but everyone was holding out on those anyhow awaiting the G5 model.

Also, if they are changing over, expect some stellar bargins as they stock-clear. I don't think it'll be as bad as everyone says.

Doesn't anyone outside Manchester know that it's only chavs with their giro's and chavved up Novas that go to the Trafford Centre these days? Everyone's back shopping in town! ;)

With the best will in the world, Nemmie, you may be right but I think this is one point on which I definitely think Cringely's on the money. Who here would seriously go out and invest a few hundred quid in new Mac hardware now when they can wait a year and get their hands on the next generation?

Well me - I ordered a 15" powerbook yesterday, with 1gb ram, and a cheeky Airport extreme to boot.

    Sod waiting for a year!

I'm all talked out on the whole x86 thing so I'll just restrict myself to coming on the shops announcement.

I hope these new stores are better than the one in Birmingham. There is nothing offensive about it, as long as you are not offended by cripplingly dull, unimaginative design.

The Birmingham store is the very difination of Meahhhh.

    @Otto

I did mate, had a ti PB (which is why I sold the iBook). Then I sold it - to get a desktop, and bought an iMac G4 800 superdrive.

I ebayed that (!) a few weeks ago, and got a iMacG5 1.7 (you'll remember my thread about getting shafted a little - i bought the G5 the same day Apple launched a buncha upgraded revisions DOH!)

However, I loves it. (although I've seen WOPR's warnings and will check the capacitors)

So to complete the transformation to the white side, I've ordered a new PB since i really *LOVED* the tiPB.

:o) /Is officially an apple nut now...

    /keeps hugging. Oops - there's no-one here now...

Yeah. I've really got the bug. Some of them have been upgrades which haven't cost me directly though, for instance, ie the powerbook is a trade for some consultancy (which is nice eh?)

I don't think Apple or software vendors will abandon the existing userbase though - so I suspect that problem won't raise it's head for years.

In fact, I think if anything the opposite is true - you may find that you can't get hold of an app for the new intel based units - as conversion and recompilation might not be as straightforward as they've made out, for a number of non-conforming apps etc.

It's very interesting I must admit. A big change in the grand scheme of things.

/looks around - keeps hugging hehe.

/isn't gay either. Just comfortable with his hex-uality...

I can't see why the software will be obselete; Rosetta will do the background translation for you.

    Relax Jedi. All is OK.

    Choo talking 'bout, Willis?

They did a demo of Photoshop AND Office via Rosetta on the keynote on the Intel box! Looks plenty fast enough to me.

Nuh-uh, the Photoshop demo was Rosetta.

Yes yes we know that PowerPC will continue to be supported and that no-one should jump on the first version of a new platform and Rosetta and universal binaries and yadda yadda, but I still wouldn't. There had to be a reason for him to come out and announce it like that, so far ahead of actually shipping the buggers.

Blimey, colin, that's quite a turnaround!

Me, I can't help worrying that all my carefully acquired software isn't going to work with my next upgrade, and I'm not going to be able to get the patch/upgrade. :(

I think people are massively overestimating the job Rosetta will do. Apple already admit that it won't work with anything that uses Altivec, for example (so that's Photoshop out for starters). I'm not worried for Apple's own software, but for the two biggies that I use all the time - Photoshop & Word - I'm highly doubtful they'll work in emulation.
