This. It's a fricking mega budget Disney superhero film, designed to show on a loop in multiplexes the world over to cater for an audience of kids and comic book nerds. Yet people are talking about it like viewing it as a honky is akin to being invited to a spiritual ceremony in central Africa.
You make it sound like you're going to another planet. -

Registered 20 years agoSaw it yesterday... Hmmm... Didn't really work for me. I had the feeling the whole movie that it was just a white power story with black actors. Next time let an African director make it. This movie is black American, not black African. What Hollywood thinks Africa is like.
Anyway... As far as marvel movies go it is ok.

Registered 6 years agoWatched it last night. Felt a bit like it was made by a nazi who was pretending to be a Jewish black person who worked in a circus in Lithuania during the 1960s but other than that it was fine. I like the bit when he did a somersault and then kicked that guy. -

80’s Lithuania is best Lithuania! This movie might do a disservice channeling Lithuania!

Registered 9 years agoI just saw it. I thought it was fine, but I really didn't appreciate the African fellow sitting across the aisle slowly tracing his finger across his neck while looking right at me. Felt a bit uncomfortable.
(but seriously, it was a Marvel movie, similar to most of the other ones) -

Yep they couldn't get enough of the Soviet occupation. They were so disappointed to see it end.

So doing, Black Panther is a lot more intelligent than I gave it credit for, wedding themes of Soviet occupation with colonization.

Registered 20 years ago@JamboWayOh i think my wording was wrong. I meant classic power trip movie that usually has white actors.
I guess i was expecting something a big different... A different marvel formula.

Registered 11 years agoJust seen it. Good acting , fun film but just couldn't get in to it with the storyline which I thought was a little weak. Like the world it was set in though etc. Decent enough .
Don't get all the black attention this is getting from both sides really. Was there much fuss when Coming to America came out? -

Registered 16 years agoNo, because that was written and directed by white dudes in an era when it cool to portray the top ranks of African society as bumbling simpletons

Registered 14 years agoTo be fair, Eddie Murphy was quite happy to do the same in his stand up (I want half Eddieeeee!) and when he came up with idea for Coming to America.
Although I don't remember many bumbling simpletons in Coming to America. -

Registered 11 years agoMy point is it's an made up African type place/country. Of course the film is going to be mostly black . You're not going to make a film in the future about Usain Bolt and get Tom Hardy to play him are you. Yeah refreshing to have a black super hero I get that . But so far I've heard public say "black panther has an all black cast? Can you imagine the complaints you'd get if it was all white, they'd call it racist" . Then there's the other view of it being a massive deal like the slave trade has just been abolished.
Don't know the comics. Is he black in them? Maybe coming to America was a bad example . I just saw it as a decent film with characters who happened to be black . Is the world still a place where that's a big step still?
