He attacked at absolutely the perfect moment. It was a proper "all-in" moment, really ballsy racing from Yates. As soon as the rest of the group started looking at each other, and then Dumoulin (after getting visibly angry with the group) realised he was going to have to pull you just knew he was going to stay away. I'm hoping Yates does well at the TT, for a climber he's pretty capable. |

Registered 15 years agoWell that was a turn up for the books, hoping that ride doesn't get deleted from the record books after the results of the doping case. -

I heard he made a rather large break today, but was busy at work. How much time did he make in the end?
I'm off to check now. -

Registered 13 years agoSo... just pure froome grit, a nice big testosterone patch to the plums a la Landis, or a nice cold bag of blood?
What's everyone's thoughts?
I read that a spectator ran by him with a giant inhaler today, I'll certainly have to watch the highlights on eurosport tonight, should be some good racing and hopefully they'll show the inhaler bit too. :-D -

Registered 16 years agoDunno, he’s not exactly been stretched over the last 3 weeks like Yates and Dumoulin have, like to think he’s merely on the same gear as the rest of them but got more in the legs. We know he can climb, probably just been waiting to peak at the right time -

Registered 13 years agoI live in hope there's no shenanigans, if he descended well, then fair enough. As you say, he's not been stretched all race due to injuries and sitting in the bunch. Maybe he got a break since everyone else probably thought he was well out of it. Tomorrow should be interesting at least!
Feel a bit sorry for Yates, mind, but bike racing is tough and he's had a long few of weeks, and gone for a few wins too. -

Registered 16 years agoHe’s done a Porte and dropped his bundle, hopefully he’ll learn from it. Shipped about half an hour today though. Maybe he’ll do a Froome and attack from the start -

Registered 8 years agoJust caught up with the stage. Once in a lifetime stage. I guess doubt will always hang over him, but that was some performance. Feel for Yates though, third week bonk but i think there will be a few GT wins for him in the future.
Great ride by Tom though, i think he may snatch it today, i think yesterday will have taken a lot out of Chris, probably for tom too really as it was all for themselves for 90k The group was pretty isolated for a good while before Chris attacked as well. -

Registered 15 years agoFelt uneasy watching that, then read this article which summed up why better than I could. Wouldn’t go as far as to ask someone not to ride until something proven though.

He said afterwards “There's a lot of planning that goes into a day like this, a lot of detail: the nutritional requirements and good fuelling strategy, the strategy for the team and who is going to do what jobs. Today we did exactly what we spoke about beforehand."
Fingers crossed the requirements stopped short of the shadier end of marginal gains. -

Registered 8 years agoI think Team sky’s experience may have helped in this race. It’s been hard (but great fun) racing from the start. Yates, Pozzivio and now seeming Pinot have all suffered in the last few days.
Team Sky have always said that the team would come good in week 3. Froome was pretty happy with his power readings in week one despite losing time and I guess they just trusted their own experience and intuition on how to race a tour.
Although even I didn’t Expect yesterday! Fingers crossed it is legit! -

I was totally expecting salaman's team to be called 'sal's butamols' or something similar, but not at all.

Quite interesting how they have broken it all done to try to get as much energy in and out of froome on the stage. A real insight into how in-depth they research the staes for the race to. -
Good write up here on the Froome / Salbutamol shit: https://cyclingtips.com/2018/07/opinion-why-wada-and-the-ucis-handling-of-the-froome-case-is-damaging-to-sport/
Edit - I'm really surprised that his fuelling plan is so simple. I expected exotic mixtures and strange potions. That's not too far off what I do for my ultra-endurance stuff (though I eat more real food).
