Now that we know Nintendo intends to have a longer than usual life for the Switch, I think it's almost a certainty there will be a revision (2019? 2020?). Do you think this revised Switch will have Nvidia's G-Sync technology, at least in handheld mode? Would this even be possible?

Why do we know that Nintendo wants a longer than usual life for the Switch? DF mentioned 2021 and based a whole article around that being longer than 4 years in some weird parallel universe.

HDMI 2.1 will support variable frame rates so hopefully everything released from 2019 onwards will support it.

Except Nintendo who will announce that their engineers have started looking into it in 2025.

Because they really need another tall bar on this chart.

I can't see them adding any meaningful upgrades to innards. That idea pretty much failed with the New 3DS. Instead, any hardware revisions we get will likely be for affordability and portability.

I can imagine them releasing a slightly smaller Switch with non-removable Joy Con and its own miniature dock (sold separately). Cheaper to manufacture and potentially harder to break.

G-Sync, G-Spot...it's just a question of priorities, really.

They target fixed framerates for games, not variable, so what possible point would it have?

More likely they'll make a headset compatible version for VR that does 90 frames, but there's not a single reason to bother with g-sync.

The first thing the revision should have is an acceptable method of chatting to friends in games.

I think the difference here is games are already built to scale depending on docked or handheld. If they were able to produce something more battery efficient with a new processor then you could easily see them creating a 1080p version of the handheld that played exactly the same software.

Looking back at this chart, amazing how close the GC got to the N64.

I find it more amazing the amount of software the Wii sold. The majority of Wii sales for just for people using it as a Wii Sports machine, the internet led me to believe...

In theory I suppose it could smooth out any dips below the target framerate, no? Avoid the judder you get with fixed refresh rate displays.

Not that this is going to happen.

@THFourteen I personally don't feel 1080p is all that important given how sharp the screen looks already. The screen itself couldn't be any bigger either if it were to support existing Joy Con or accessories and the resolution would certainly go to waste on a smaller display.

You've also got to note just how well first party titles sold. Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit and Wii Play all sold between 20 and 30 million units each. Then you have Wii Sports, bundled in, but officially counted as 80 million units. Most other first party games were 10 - 20 million units, too.

Not to ignore the immense number of shovelware titles that littered the supermarkets.

What's the point in having a 1080p screen when loads of games can't even hit 720p in portable?

Smaller with better battery life would be ideal for me.

Don't see it having g-sync, but I'd definitely be interested in a new iteration of the switch.

Having been a Wii U owner, I've held off on Switch. It's an interesting machine but with all its Wii U ports I can hold off for now and the hardware is a bit flawed in my personal view (battery life in particular). I'm in no rush, but if an improved iteration comes out in 1 - 2 years, I'll jump in then.
